Indiana Jones Special Editions

I recently heard a rumour that Spielberg plans to re-release the Indiana Jones trilogy with deleted/extended scenes plus updated effects in a couple of years' time to coincide with the new movie. Can anyone shed any light on this, or is it a pile of Bantha Poodoo? If it's true I'll be very excited to see these new editions. At least Spielberg did the decent thing and gave us a tasty re-mastered DVD set of the original films before tampering with them. (I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere in the forum.)

I've seen rumors about Raiders getting this treatment, but not the whole series. Whether it's true or not,...*shrug*.

Personally I think that money could be better spent elsewhere. Complete score releases, perhaps? ;)

Star Wars, I can understand them wanting to make changes and tweaks here and there.  But Indiana Jones?  Why?  They haven't dated.  They're perfect as they are.

The special effects not dated? Mmmm.

No, but don't tell me the effects haven't dated. I remember when they (Jones, Shorty, Kate) came out of the mountain hole that the effects were pretty evident, as were the soldiers falling into the abyss. I mean, even in the 80s, it was already clear as crystall that these FXs were visable. But hey, maybe they have been tuned up a little for the DVD release, I don't know.

I dont care about optical cleaning.

Adding new CGI things well...

I'll have to see Indy IV. Then they may need consistency, but i htink it would never be as 'hard' as with SW, so i wouldnt care if they are not touched...

Typical blue screen and matt painting problems only Alexcremers, not too bad, not worth trying to fix. They aren't really FX movies I think, I mean they aren't Star Wars, it's set in the 1930's!

I don´t think that an optical cleaning and some renewed effects would decrease the quality of the films, but a lot of people would be complaining about the changes...

I'm not complaining, those changes were ever so minor, and they were corrections of actual mistakes, not things the director thought should have been done differently 20 years ago, just cause he's in a different stage of his life now.

The Indy set has the 3 films, 99.8 % unaltered, in brilliant picture and sound quality, so i'm happy with them.

The only thing i'm not content about is the small amount of extra's, and the way both Spielberg and Lucas seem to feel the need to apologize for the wonderfull Temple Of Doom.

"Don't believe them!  Don't trust them!"

Neil

"I've never been able to forgive them for the death of Star Wars..."

But seriously, I think the first two Indy films still look excellent and really don't need any tweaking. Reinserted scenes might be interesting if they're done well and don't necessitate the butchering of Johnny's score. As for Last Crusade, I think this contains the weakest looking effects of the trilogy. I appreciate that many of these effects are more complex than the earlier movies, but I would love them to CG all the plane shots. The CSO/model shots really look bad, especially for a 1989 film! I don't get how all the plane shots in 1987's Empire of the Sun look so much better (or maybe they were real planes...).

Here's my overall philosophy on "special editions". I have no problem with dodgy-looking old effects being overlaid with more realistic CGI versions OF THE SAME THING. It's just when completely new effects are added for no reason at all other than the fact that it is now easier to do them that I get annoyed. A good example is the dewback standing in the background as Luke/Ben enter the bar in Mos Eisley. There was nothing wrong with the original! It moved much more slowly, nodding it's head up and down. It looked real compared to the overanimated new version.

TOD is a wonderfull film.

It takes all the best elements from Raiders, and takes it from there.

It's an uncompromising piece of film making that grabs you by the throattrows you around the cinema 9or living room) for 2 hours, before finally putting you back in your seat, exhausted but satisfied.

Raiders may the the classic Indiana Jones film, but TOD is the most like a rollercoaster ride.

Hmmm... See, I'd heard that many changes to Raiders actually were completed (nothing as big as the Star Wars changes, more like the THX 1138 background changes etc), but dropped from this DVD version at the last minute. I think this came from the same "insider" on TF.N who accurately reported many of the Star Wars DVD changes way before anyone else knew anything about them, though I may be mistaken.

Either way, I really don't mind what they do to the Indy films now... I've got the version I wanted. Maybe a new enhanced release of the films in the future would give us more hope of expanded scores?

I'd choose to watch Temple of Doom over Last Crusade any day.

;) The look of the film is completely changed in THX 1138! Nothing big?!?! I'm shocked!

Has Robert Duvall's head been swapped? Anybody been digitally replaced with other actors? Are there giant CGI-created animals lumbering all over the place now?

I agree 100% with this!

We have the original films on DVD, and if in the future we will have another DVD-set of the trilogy with edited films, I will buy them. That's for sure!!!
