I've said before that Spaceballs is not only one of my favorite movies ever, but possibly the best parody ever made (but of course I haven't seen them all  ). Now the source here is AICN, so file this under RUMOR until otherwise noted. Here's supposedly comments from Mel Brooks himself in a recent interiview:

Playbill : What's the secret to The Producers longevity?

MB: I think it's just a matter of right time, right place. There was a thing called video and then there was a thing called DVDs, then it became more successful, and so the time was right for it, ripe for it actually, to go to Broadway. Now, it's the right time for it to be made back into a movie.

Playbill : With Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane?

MB: Most definitely. There might be a few changes, for instance an Australian chap named Bert Newton plays Franz Leibkind in the show down under and he gives the performance of that role I've ever seen frankly. I'd love Newton to be involved. I'd also like Nicole Kidman to be involved, and apparently she's keen.

Playbill : Will you have a role in it?

MB : It's doubtful, but I'm writing myself back into the Spaceballs sequel that I'm now writing, so you haven't seen the last of my face. Why another Spaceballs? It wouldn't feel right have anyone else play Yoghurt and the first one was the best experience I've had making a movie since Blazing Saddles.

Playbill : When can we expect that?

MB : Best case scenario : a week before the new Star Wars opens. Worst Case Scenario : a year after the new star wars opens.

If this is true, wow. Let's just hope it's better than his Dracula movie.

Brooks has not made a really good parody in a long time.

Spaceballs was pretty good, but not near the level of Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein, when the genre itself was still new and fresh.

I thought the spoof was a dead genre, untill I learned of Shaun Of The Dead.

Still, it's a pretty good bet that this time round Spaceballs II will actually be better then the films it's spoofing.

Another SW parody... GREAT

I hope this one is not too hard... I can definately see a crude Jar Jar's parody (just think how poor C3PO fared in the other :/ )

And by the way, nowadays parodies have less class than the ancient ones...

Luke, who will see this one in English first so he can understand the jokes.

Er... due to the SFX gap between the two movies, wouldnt it be more of a parody to make a special edition Spaceballs?

Hmm. I would like to see this new Spaceballs. As was said before, it would probably be a better movie than the movies it is spoofing.

Jeff -- who thinks a pre-Ep. 3 release would be perfect

When does Neil (or Rogue Leader) come here to state that the products of 1999 and 2002 are already the best parodies of Star Wars?

What ever they may be, they're not funny.

Spaceballs is the unfunniest movie ever made. Its a stupid, piece of crap, except for the Star of David ship.

Actually, Joe.... The "Jews In Space" segment is from Mel's last really funny parody... History Of The World, part 1.

So, I guess there was nothing in Spaceballs that you liked.

We're Jews... In space.... Zooming along protecting the Hebrew race

personally I'd rather Mel make The Next to the Last Temptation of Christ, Merchandising.

I think The Producers is still best.

Morlock- who laughed exactly twice during Young Frankenstein

I thought, though I could be wrong, that It was going to be a prequal. So I doubt that title we all want, "The Search For More Money" will be used.

I can only hope that John Morris will come out of hiding and score this!!!

But I have a bad feeling he won't. ROTFLMAO

Whatever happened between Brooks and Morris? I assumed they had a falling out, but Morris was very happy when talking about Mel and his films on The Producers DVD. Hummie Mann ain't bad, I like his Robin Hood, but he's no John Morris.

how sad, I can think of several scenes and laugh more than that.

Well, I've never seen the Whale movies, so I'm at a distinct disadvantage. But either way, I was going crazy how much they overused the great main theme.
