Well, I think it's beyond dispute that if there's no "TIE Fighter Attack"-type cue, the score is an unequivocal failure.

Yeah, I want my Lincoln march!

Karol

Amen!

Yes, because let us not forget that Williams is infallible and can do no wrong.

Amen brother! Amen! Testify!

But also I would like to remind that there are enough of those who take up the enthusiastic positive stand and those who view each new score with skeptical and critical eye after hearing a couple of notes of it. We kind of balance each other out. :)

I have an idea the Lincoln score will be one of JW's less noticeable works...

But I sure hope it's got at least one memorable (meaning mind-blowing) theme/track, kinda like "Hymn to the Fallen"!

Can't judge one way or the other, just by this very brief snippet.

You're letting yourself and the board down, Josh. Have you no respect for your fellow enthusiasts who are able to discern with immediate unshakable conviction that these few notes are unquestionably indicative of a masterpiece in waiting, the sincere, precise and heartfelt musings of an artist at the top of his game, a master with no equal?

Frankly, I'm disgusted by your reckless reservations.

Just guarding myself against disappointment.

I know from past experience what expectations set too high can do...

So who's actually read Team of Rivals?

*Raises hand* good book, worth a read before the movie comes out. Though I would start now. It is quite lengthy.

The cinematography shown in the teaser is stunning.

Eh, it's OK just a lot of generic blue backlight night scenes and generic blue rainy muddy day battle scenes we've seen ad nauseum since Marcus Aurelius and Maximus defeated the Germans, and the Allies stormed the beaches of Normandy.

It's getting old.

Looks interesting. There's one book about Lincoln that I saw in a bookstore and passed up, and have been looking for ever since. Something to the effect of his final decisions as President, or a compendium of his political and/or military decisions. I forget the author and everything, just that it had "decision" in the title. It's bugging me that I can't remember what it is.

"Abraham Lincoln (Presidents and Their Decisions)" maybe?

Team of Rivals (by Goodwin) is actually what Lincoln the film is based on I believe? The first 250 pages are slow and overly suspenseful, but it picks up.

Ehhh, I think it's too earlier to make a judgment about this score. It sounds like a simple theme, but we haven't heard any of the development. The "bonding" theme from War Horse would sound pretty much the same if played in a plaintive piano solo style.

I doubt it was that, it looks like a high school reader. I appreciate the effort. It may have been "366 Days in Abraham Lincoln's Presidency: The Private, Political, and Military Decisions of America's Greatest President."

Please keep in mind that I HAVE experienced most of the score for Lincoln...I'm not going off of 20 seconds of music.

Next, I forget who mentioned that maybe my opinion will change if I actually (insert sarcasm) listen to the score. I have the ability to read a full score and hear it exactly how it will sound fully orchestrated. I can't judge what emotion the players will put in, or if Williams will do something totally not in the score (occasionally) but I have indeed experienced the whole score and how it will sound.

Wow, there are even more sarcastic snots on this board than the last time I posted here! Thought I'd update you all with some fun behind the scenes info with this score, as I did for War Horse and Tintin, but so far the majority of the posts in response to mine have been the above piddling little wastes of time. Forget it.

And by the way, being able to read an orchestral score and hear it aren't superpowers - they are musical powers. Judging from your avatar, let me put this in terms you can understand:

Bloodboal: Level 1 cave troll with magic music capabilities of 05/100; a pair of bitchin' green pointy shoes; and a "I'm sarcastic because I'm not confident in myself" score of 97/100

Me: Level 6 Film Composer with magic music capabilities of 87/100; real world shoes that I wear to recording sessions; and a "helpful attitude to give a community I've been a part of (first with a different username and now with this one) since 2003 a sneak perspective of the music" score of 90/100.

But wait!! You've struck me with your mystical "Sword of Attitude" and countered my attempt to use the magic spell "Reason" with your "Sarcasm shield!" You got me good! My helpful attitude score has dropped down to a score of 12/100. Oh well.

Then what answers do you want? These people haven't heard the score, they're clueless.

Well, people implied that reading the full orchestral score and hearing the music recorded is not the same and it wouldn't be possible to judge a score from it.

But you CAN (see these BOLD letters?) judge a score by the music sheets if you are an experienced musician and can hear it in your head.

It's not magic, it is skill and the result of hard work.

I have begun reading cookbooks in order to experience the cuisine that I can neither cook nor afford to buy. It thrills my tastebuds without expanding my waistline.

This is one of few posts here that actually made me laugh out loud.

So wojo is in someway, self-stimulating his tastebuds with culinary 'porn'

SICK! :P

You know what the funny thing is? I bet he is checking the thread now constantly for reactions to his post.

always makes me sad to encounter people with such big ego-issues.

"naaahha, mommy he was mean to me, now he can't be my friend anymore..BAaaahhhaa!"

I already had to laugh at "Lincoln gets 6 out of 10 - sorry for the bad news"

BAD NEWS?! REALLY!?! YOU didn't like it that much and that's bad news?!?! The trained ability to read musical scores and hear them in your head is one thing (a great thing!) but thinking that it is YOU and who can decide if something is good or bad for others.

To be fair, I think he means it as his opinion, and not one set in stone at that.

Still don't get why this should be bad news to us? do you often hear people say

"GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY! I LIked the dish my mum has cooked for me!!"

"Oh thank god, for a second we thought you might not..phhew,

he clearly ment to say (in my opinion)

"Hey, I can read music, I read it - it's mediocre, that's how it is - I know you people were expecting more, but hey I - the ONE who can.. I who can make paper sing in my head, do know it is not that good.. so that's how it is.. end of luck - baaad news"

I also have this jedi-like ability. Send me the scores and I will confirm if this score is less great that War Horse.
