I finished my piece!

Well it's 2.50am and I have finally finished my new piece. It has been a real challenge. I was comissioned to compose a celebratory piece for three youth orchestras combined. I was specifically requested to write according to the orchestras' abilities. The first orchestra has the oldest players, high school age. The middle orchestra is the younger kids, and the third orchestra is a beginner string orchestra. The problem has been the score. Owing to the orchestras' varying levels of ability I couldn't simply write for one orchestra and have them all play the same music. I had to have all three orchestras on one page! This means the score has 49 staves! To fit all those staves I have had to use a tiny font and it is very hard to read. I will blow the score up to 11-17 size to help matters, but I still think the conductor will have to squint a little to read everything!

Still, I'm very happy with it. The last movement (of 5) has a certain John Williams feel to it. I wanted a grand choral-type piece to finish and the end result feels a little like "Hymn to the Fallen". My own tune though, of course!

I'm excited. This is the first "celebratory" piece I've written. It's called "Sinfonietta: To the Future", and if anyone's out in Sioux City, Iowa in March of next year please come along to hear it!

Thanks for the interest. I'd rather wait until after the performance before putting out samples of it. At the moment I only have the crappy Sibelius rendition of it, which sounds pretty awful. Should sound better with real players!
