I've been looking forward to the Series of Unfortunate Events score for a looong time and it sounds pretty good... Well the little snippet does... I love the books and the movie looks good. And I think the score will be too.

What a beautiful little selection from Lemony Snicket. Being into the 8th book of the series, I'm really excited for this movie and score. It'll be my first Newman score.

Yup, they're pretty nifty. Got frames and everything.

Morlock- who thinks Ray needs to get Road To Perdition and Little Women. Now.

Road To Perdition is one of the only scores of the past few years that I would rank among the best EVER. Little Women is wonderful. And he's done a crapload of other great stuff.

I'm curious to hear what Newman does for this film as a whole. It seems like there is a lot of crazy parts that I hope he doesn't go over the top for. And Ray, you do need to get some Newman scores. For starters I'd say either or all of Road To Perdition, Finding Nemo, Angels In America.

Justin - Who could also reccomend The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption and even Little Women. But won't for now. ;)

Finding Nemo is nice, but I find it one of his lesser efforts. It's a nice solid score, but I find Little Women, The Player, and especialy Road to Perdition to be remarkable. Haven't really to Angels in America yet.

I agree Finding Nemo is the weakest of those three but I still think it's great and definatly worth picking up.

Justin - Not sure which he likes more, Road To Perdition or Angels In America.

I dunno, I just thought it was funny how my casual comment spurred a discussion of essential Thomas Newman scores. The "thanks" was genuine, though. ;)

I have been looking forward to this score for ages. I'm a huge, huge fan of Newman and we havent had anything from him since the fantastic Angels in America (which I too recommend as a first purchase and am listening to right now).

I would rank Road to Perdition, Shawshank Redemption, Finding Nemo and American Beauty as the best of his other work.

I do also hope that he hasn't gone too overboard with his wacky side for Lemony Snicket but after listening to a clip, there's plenty of his great piano work ;)

PS, anyone know when we might get his score to Cinderella Man? Could turn out something like a sister score to Perdition.

There are clips of each track up at amazon now. Well, Newman experts, what do you think? To me, the clips don't seem to have much whimsy about them. I guess you probably can't get a good feel for the score from such short snippets, though.

It's been mentioned on other sites that it sounds a bit like a more grown up Finding Nemo, and after listening to 4 or 5 cues, I would agree with that.

But you're right, you can't really judge a score by 30 second clips which is why I'll wait until I can download it and hear it in full, then I'll buy it ;)

Thomas Newman does what he does best. Write Thomas Newman music. If you don't like that kind of music then I suggest you stay away, because he does nothing you can even remotly mistake for anything else. ;)

Justin - Who happens to love the T. Newman stlye. ;)

WOW! I''m so happy to see that i'm not the only Newman fan here.

I would personaly suggest Finding Nemo, i consider it his best, there isn't a track on that cd i don't like. After that perhaps Angels in America then Perdition and probably Scent of a Woman.

Nothing, I just haven't heard enough to recommend. Scent of A Woman has one of my favorite Newman tracks, 'Tract House Ginch'.

IMO Road to Perdition is amazing in every way. It's almost a new way of scoring a movie. It's such a vwonderful, beautiful, brilliant, inspired score.

American Beauty is nearly my favourite Newman score. I just love how...American it sounds. I could listen to nothing but Still Dead, Lunch w/the King and American Beauty all day :P It isn't an easy score though, and it took me a fair few listens before I liked it.

I'm listening right now to 'The Great Work Begins' from Angels in America. Does anyone else get a weird feeling when they listen from about 2:04 - end? It's turning into one of my all time favourite Newman tracks.

HPFAN, I feel the same way about Finding Nemo - its the only Newman album I can listen to the whole way through (except for the Robbie Williams track @ the end). Almost every other album either has period songs scattered around or contains an occasional track where Newman goes a bit too crazy (specifically, Root Beer & Choking the Bishop from AB)

Thanks so much for all the Newman suggestions!

I don't have any Newman yet either, though I'd been planning to get Angels in America, definitely going to get Road to Perdition too...for starters. ROTFLMAO

So... Has anyone listened to all of the Series of Unfortunate Events tracks on Amazon? Or has anyone bought the CD? Tell me what you think if you have... I haven't got the score yet and am not at all a good critiquer on music... So I'm just curious as to what other people think.

I just bought the score, giving in to a weakness when I was at Barnes and Noble (also picked up By Request thanks to the numerous recommendations from people here). I haven't listened to much of it yet, but I will soon and I'll let you kno what I think!

Ray Barnsbury-who thinks the mysterious music box motif may be for VFD . . . (but no spoilers please, I'm only on Book the 8th)

I have the album -- for the most part, it's not much of a departure for Thomas Newman. So while the score is unusually idiosyncratic for a children's film -- separating it from, say, Williams's pleasing but familiar sounding music for the Harry Potter features -- it means that if you've watched American Beauty, Road to Perdition, and Finding Nemo, the soundscape Newman has established for what may become a series of movies is not a particularly distinct one. It doesn't help matters that no strong melodies emerge to give some definition to the score, let alone tie it all together.
