How I lost my respect for The Color Purlpe soundtrack

Just a few minutes my perception of Quincy Jones' (and about 20 others) score for Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple was completely shattered. I always regarded it as a first rate achievement (I know many others - especially on this board - don't have that much appreciation for it) and it did bother me that Williams didn't write it.

Especially the main theme (which Williams later re-arranged for his Cinema Serenade album with Itzhak Perlman) could really move me. It's a gorgeous, beautiful theme.

But years ago I read in a Dutch film magazine that Jones' copied a theme from Georges Delerue. I never found out what that piece was until now... If you're familiar with The Color Purple theme (and especially the arrangment during the Main Title sequence) listen to the following:

This makes it very clear that Jones was not only inspired by Delerue's piece, but in a way copied it (maybe not note for note, but the similarities are extremely close).

I still enjoy the score for The Color Purple, but I lost my respect for it.

Were you not a James Horner fanatic once, Roald?

I was just thinking that things like this never really bother me... There's no way I could be a Horner fan if they did.

Did anybody ever notice how beautiful the photography is of this film? Spielberg is a very visual director. The stories he tells with it are deeper than one might think. I never had any problems with the score. Can't wait to see it on DVD. It's been a long time. I hope they used a good master for it.

I have the DVD, but still haven't watched the movie. Don't know why, I was never compelled to.

I've the 2-disc edition (I should check out the quality tonight, just out of curiosity) but I'm waiting for a good moment to see the film.
