Sandor 459
Just wondering if the death of Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein influenced Williams in any way. What do you think?
Mr. Breathmask 480
He knew Goldsmith pretty well, right? I'm not sure about Bernstein. But obviously the loss of anyone you know will affect you.Although I don't know if it influenced him professionally.

JoeinAR 1,759
Interesting question, but since he died July 21 last year and John hasn't released as score since then, the only answer is NO.
scissorhands 16
I can't notice any change in his music after the death of his first wife, so I don't think Jerry's will be an exception.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,251
Williams knew both Goldsmith and Bernstein for decades. So i'm sure their death has not left him wholly uneffected. But i'm not sure how this should affect his music. John Crichton 4
There's no doubt that their deaths affected him personally, how could they not? But I'd be shocked if it influences his professional life.
Bowie 45
Haha.WILLIAMS: "Morning, dear. Oh, did you hear my good friend and fellow composer Jerry Goldsmith passed on? Oh, yes, quite the tragedy, and could you investigate that damn racket that goes on in the shed every night!? It's so noisy I can't even tell when musical ideas are popping into my head!"WIFE: "Mmm yes, John. Oh, I listened to your score for Always the other day. It's shit."WILLIAMS: "Shut up." Justin 2
Maybe he realized that life is too short and that he should have a signed copy of the complete Indiana Jones Trilogy sent to every member of JWFan. (Except for KM whom he will himself personally deliver two copies.)Justin
David Coscina 3
I can't notice any change in his music after the death of his first wife, so I don't think Jerry's will be an exception.Actually, I do. After 1974, Williams wrote some beautiful yet sad elegies. I didn't this same somber tone in his music prior to his wife's death. Probably why I like his music so much- there's a real emotional gravity in the writing and a tinge of pathos.
Sandor 459
Maybe it hit him he won't live forever,so he has to put extra quality in his scores. Yeah, something along those lines. That was my motivation for starting this topic. Not only put extra quality in them, but also simply compose while there is still time. Williams once said that his best work is yet to be written, that he always feels he can do better. I can't notice any change in his music after the death of his first wife, so I don't think Jerry's will be an exception.Well, it has often been said that after his first wife died Williams' music has become more profound, more mature which is accentuated by the fact that Williams' career was truly launched by 1975's Jaws. Ofcourse I don't mean to say in any way that therefor it was good that his wife died so Williams could reach his height.
Morn 7
He's in his 70's, he doesn't need his friends to remind him of his mortality, he just needs a mirror.
