The Doctor Who Thread.....

Moffat says his wife says it was an optical illusion. Who knows? Moffat likes to say one thing while meaning something completely different so it could actually be the TARDIS or a very, very strange conincidence.

Agreed. It makes you think that the last episode was written by the same man who wrote "The Empty Child/"The Doctor Dances"...

Maybe, but the special and season 6 is written in EXACTLY the same style as Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead....

Just caught up on the show once again.

Season 6 has sucked platypus balls. It's like Star Trek Voyager....good episode followed by ZZZZZZzzzzz, WTF?!, Crap, ZZZZZZZ,WTF?!, good episode. The only saving grace for all the episodes in between the one or two good ones is that Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are still great in their roles.

Writers, directors, editors...need a swift kick in the ass.

Last season wasn't good enough for its actors and its music. The previous season was a great example of everything coming together with a strong story. Season 6 has no personality and it's full of unfocused episodes with some potential but that just meandered around doing too much or too little. It actually made no sense. I hope next one gets back on track.

The silents were one of my biggest disappointments. We should have never seen them. They could have made something completely genius at creating an enemy out of nothing, just playing with the regular film editing to fool the characters and the audience. Like the delicious scene of Amy seeing the marks on her hand (ruined inmediately afterwards), or when the Doctor and Churchill go around for half an episode apparently fighting something (ruined inmediately afterwards).

Another of my disappointments was the solution for the astronaut scene. There was something eerie and wonderful about an Apollo astronaut coming out of a lake in Utah. That it turns out to be what it was ruined it for me.

Season 6 was not that bad, but it did suffer from pacing issues, and seemingly last minute inspirations from it's head writer.

Moffat needs to learn to let things breath for a bit.

Also, not EVERYTHING has to be a plot twist.

More things I disliked: the pointless episode with the pirates. That The Doctor's Wife has so many deleted scenes because, well, we have to make room for the pointless filler episodes around it, don't we? The following two parter (that didn't need to be) not making any sense. The next two episodes being bloated with stuff without carrying any wheight. They try to make something cool with Melody... which would have been cool if we actually had seen that Melody growing up before. The ending of Closing Time (I'm sick of this "power of love" deus ex machina solution. The previous episode with Craig did the same.). And so on and on and on...

Now to say something I liked, the opening scenes of The Wedding of River Song are my favourite opening for a Doctor Who episode so far. It kind of sums up why I like the show in a few minutes.

No. I think it is just fans wishful thinking. Though they've been playing up a big 50th anniversary so perhaps that will be a multi-doctor story/arc.

I listened to it about 20 times in a row on a loop. I admit it could be him, but it doesn't sound as pronounced as McGann usually is in the audios. Perhaps its a set up for the 50th anniversary, but its been neither confirmed nor denied at this point.

I'd completely forgotten about that voice. I hope it's not just yet another idea that never gets resolved. I'm still frustrated that Moffatt seems to have forgotten all about the Tardis exploding at the end of season 5. If he plans on answering all these open questions next season he's leaving it all a bit late, given that most viewers have either forgotten about them or simply don't care any more. Also, it doesn't make for a promising season, does it? Season 7: The season in which all the plotholes from seasons 5 and 6 are tied up. Doesn't leave much freedom for creative new stories.

I haven't commented on this thread since the Christmas episode went out. To be honest I didn't really know what to write. I neither loved it nor hated it. It was just sort of meh. As I watched it I felt the same mixture of excitement and disappointment that I've been feeling while watching most recent Doctor Who stories.

The special suffered from some of the pacing pacing issues that hampered season 6. Everything is sooo fast, no time to breath.

Since we have no official confirmation regarding the voice I will refrain from having an opinion about it.

I have mixed feelings about how to proceed on series 7. On the one hand I would like them to resolve some of the threads from 5 and 6 (the exploding Tardis in particular). On the other hand maybe it's better if they just move along. Gillan and Darvil seem to be contracted for series 7 though.

I completely understand your feelings towards possible approaches for season 7. The show desperately needs a bit of a step away from the complex and yet unsatisfying story arch of season 6. But like you I really hope we get an explanation for the Tardis exploding. It was such a major event in season 5 that it will be really annoying to continuity-minded fans like me if it never gets resolved.

My DVD set of The UNIT Files arrived today. Rubber dinosaurs and faceless androids! I can't wait!

Oh, wow! Does "Invasion Of The Dinosaurs" have the CGIs that the BBC was promising?

"The Daemons" is out in the UK on 26th March.

Hopefully season 7 will be more tightly focused, less arc-heavy and the production issues that plagued the last season are resolved. Also, less River Song. Please, Moffat. I know you love writing her, but she's getting more smug and less likeable the more she appears.

The problem is, what can you still do with her? The 2 biggest questions concerning here are answered. And neither really lived up to the promise of Silence Of The Library/Forest Of The Dead. Sometimes questions are best left unanswered.

In her first appearance River became a fan favourite because she was a mystery, and behaved like she was the Doctor's wife.

Turns out that was exactly what she was, and looking back she could never have been anything else.

Loved Alex Kingston to death though!

Season 6 only works (if "works" is the right word...) if you think of it as "The River Song Story". Pretty much the entire story arc revolved around revelations about her. Her tale is done. I'm 99% sure the show will move away from her character now.

Oh, wow! Does "Invasion Of The Dinosaurs" have the CGIs that the BBC was promising?

Haven't watched it yet, but nowhere does it mention CGI dinosaurs on the box. I think the BBC left it alone. Bit of a shame. They did try to recolourize the missing episode 1, though. Apparently the results were not all that great so they also include the black and white episode 1 as an alternative.

Pixie, what is your fav River Song moment?

Mine still remains her farewell scene in Forest of the Dead. The way she descibed how "her" Doctor knew she was going to die, and how they spend their last day was really heartbreaking. I really hope they never decide to show us that moment.

Well, the shorts on the Season 6 DVD show Smith taking her out for their last date, so hopefully that will be the extent. The look in his face (both of them) was more than enough to show how the Doctor felt about that moment.

That scene definitely, but also the first/last kiss with the Doctor is very emotional. Very well-written and well-played scene. The Moff still has magic up his sleeves, but we just don't see it quite as consistently as we used to.

Hm, yes?....Kidney dialasys? My God what is this, the dark ages?...Oh yes, series 6! Suppose I should put a few thoughts on it down now. Warning: there may be ramblings ahead...

First off looking over the last couple of pages of this thread I'm really surprised at the negativity. I for one loved the year and thought it would go down well here too. Of course my love of heavily serialized storytelling on TV is well known (Deep Space 9, Farscape, all off Joss Whedon's shows, modern Battlestar Galactica), so I was happy to see my all time favorite show continue to trend in this direction more than ever.

The first half of the series was admittedly very up and down. The Impossible Astronaut story was superb, a great way to kick things off. My only quibble about it would be that it was a bit too ambitious from a meta story standpoint, with the Silence creatures secretly controlling humanity. Not only is it an idea that was used multiple times in classic Who, I don't think the long term implications were all that well thought out. But that shouldn't detract from enjoyment. The Curse of the Black Spot was easily the weakest ep of the Moffatt era (between this and the equally dreary Lazarus Experiement, Steve Thompson should be banned from the writer's room). The Ganger 2 parter, while not particularly bad, was not particularly good either. There's no way it should have been two parts too, it was WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too stretched out, like a crappy Pertwee 6 parter. That more than anything else killed it. In between that, there's The Doctor's Wife....bliss. Sheer bliss. A great story, and more than enough classic series continuity porn to make me one happy person. My first thought after watching this: when Moffatt decided it's time to hang up the TARDIS key, it should be passed straight to Neil Gaiman. A Good Man Goes to War was immensely satisfying. The revelation of River being the Ponds' daughter was overhyped, but it that shouldn't detract from the quality of the storytelling. I can imagine Moffatt waiting for years to get that "don't give me those blank looks" line in with the Cybermen and laughing with glee at finding the right spot for it. And it also features the single scariest monster ever created by Steven Moffat. Forget about Weeping Angels or Silent creatures....the universe will never, ever be ready for a lactating Sontaran.

After the roller coaster of the first half, I thought the second half was uniformily excellent. Let's Kill Hitler (what a title, by the way. Love it.) did throw me for a bit of a loop on first viewing, I wasn't expecting that much to be revealed so quickly. It settled much better with me on repeat watchings. The Tesselecter crew deserve a spinoff, great bunch. The captain just oozed quiet British, Starfleetish dignity. Night Terrors was the weakest of this run, but still decent. The Girl Who Waited was a great vehicle for Amy and Rory, and really gave those actors the chance to show their chops. The God Complex had me rivited on first viewing, great stuff. And I called before the ep that the creature would be some kind of Nimon reference! Closing Time was harmless fun, a chance for the Doctor to have some fun with a friend before the end. Though it did show once again that coming up with satisfying plot solutions has never been Gareth Roberts' strong suit (he's a comedy guy). And finally, The Wedding of River Song was, for my money, the single most satisfying ep of the Moffat era to date. Pitch perfect. Kind of funny at the start, it feels more like the start of an RTD finale: modern London, contemporary news anchors, Simon Callow as Dickens cameo. It's obvious that Moffat's already prepping for the end of Matt Smith's time, the fields of Trenzelor and the Fall of the Eleventh stuff. And the end. The Question. Hoo boy. I was floored, astounded at the genius and audacity of it all. It's brilliant, so in your face and yet something I would have never, ever thought of. Inspired.

This year's Christmas special? Harmless fun. The highlight was the Doctor's tour of the house. Matt Smith's Doctor is such a kid. Great ending with Amy and Rory too, and the "happy crying" payoff. Overall not as good as A Christmas Carol though, that one was a bit deeper. And had Michael Gambon.

Yes I thought it was awesome.

It reminded me of the "something blue" line at the end of series 5.

I should also throw in my hope for an ideal 50th anniversary season: rather than throwing them all together in a special, each living former Doctor should get his own full episode. With companion(s).

McGann deserves a turn. And he had a whole new costume made for his Doctor by the folks at Big Finish I think.

Another random thought: I rewatched all of the new series after series 6 came out on blu, and watching the Silence in the Library story after learning everything about River allows you to see that story in a whole new light, from River's perspective. You can really understand her pain and anguish that the day that she had been dreading for so long, when the Doctor would see her as a complete stranger.

That was already there years ago, Alex Kingston gives a superb performance

I think that was just wishful thinking on McGann's part, as that costume was more in line with what he wanted to wear in 96. All that every happened with that was a single picture taken at a convention, so I don't think it was anything official, as it hasn't been referenced in any of the audios nor have any pictures been used for publicity. I wouldn't be surprised to see a mulit-doc episode though I do like the idea of single episodes, especially if Smith is keen on leaving the show soon. They can always use some nonsense about the Doctor's timestream being corrupted or some bullocks to explain why Baker(s) and Davison look different than before they regenerated.

It definitely is I agree, but you understand her point of view much more after series 6. It just allows you to see it with a different perspective, it did for me at least.

DOCTOR WHO---Daniel Radcliffe said he's not interested in reuniting with his HARRY POTTER director David Yates for his DOCTOR WHO movie, "I don't know if I could play him. Matt Smith plays [The Doctor] and does a wonderful job. They don't need me." Steven Moffat has said if there is a movie, it will star Matt Smith and be set in the universe created by the tv series. Moffat is writing the episode in which Amy and Rory exit the series, "I'm writing that right now, the big Rory and Amy heartbreaking finale. I think you'll be in trouble watching it."

BTW when you post text from another website and it is too small like that, just highlight everything and click the Eraser icon "Remove Format" and that will remove all the formatting and make it normal size.

Also, its a requirement of this board to include a SOURCE when you post news items like that.

Wow. I can't believe they are actually doing it. It's plain to any Dr Who fan that the Borg are a bit of a rip off of the Cybermen. This comic kind of acknowledges that fact by having the two villains together in the same adventure. :D

On a different note: Does anyone know where I can download the Loose Cannon recons of the missing 60s Dr Who adventures? These are legal, and created with the blessing of the BBC. Currently the only way to get them is to send a VHS tape to Loose Cannon for them to copy the episodes onto. They then return it for free, minus the cost of the stamped addressed envelope. As I don't have a VHS player I really want to get these episodes on my computer. Can any Who fan point me in the right direction?

I don't think they're actually legal or have the "blessing" of the BBC. I think the BBC turns a blind eye to them, if anything.

I was rather shocked to see The Borg has aspects of both The Cybermen and The Daleks.

BTW, maybe this announcement finally explains Benedict Cumberbatch's role in the new Star trek film.

He's the 12th Doctor, turned rogue, and has to destroy the alternate timelime created in Star Trek 2009!
