The more I see, the more I want to see, its obvious that Singer respects his material.

Back to the geeky David Huxley-ish Clark Kent, are we?

Too bad for them. It shouldn't pander to newer generations at the expense of a good movie

But of course. How can it be a good movie if it's modern, or if it drifts from the original?

Ender, NO movie should pander to newer generations at the expense of a good movie. Naive? Sure, but why should it be modern for the sake of being modern?

and thats why I think batman begins will stink, its pandering to a newer generation, it has zero to do with Batman, the real one, not the reinvented one.

It might be the first good one, Joe. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The director is a big fan of Blade Runner. :)

Singer loves Donner and Nolan loves Scott. The future looks bright!

the first one was the first good one, but now he's some martial arts freak, with an attitude.

I prefer the dark detective to this reinvented one.

Nolan has also stated his distaste for CGI, that and the Bladerunner thing give me some hope for this.

this isn't a re-invented Batman.... this IS the REAL Batman... the true Batman is a martial arts expert... and had a hell of an attitude

But it isn't really a "future", now is it?

I actually have faith in the new one. Based only on what I've seen in the trailer and read about, Nolan seems passionate enough about the film to make it special, and not just 'the next batman'. The casting choices are terrific, and the JNH/Zimmer combo will prove to be an interesting one, I believe. I could obviously be wrong, but the mere fact that they admit that the last 2 were terrible speaks volumes

What makes you say this? Spielberg has emulated his favorite directors for all of his movies. Orson Welles repeatedly watched John Ford's Stagecoach while he was making Kane, and the two movies have a lot in common, in terms of style, yet both are masterpieces. Every artist has influences, otherwise there would be no art.

".....He can take a tear that's just forming in your eye, and he can cause it to drip" Spielberg on Williams

I know this completely off topic, but I have always thought this quote was stupid. The first time I heard it, I pictured Williams jabbing someone in the eye with his baton.

thanks for proving you don't know what you are talking about

The director, Christopher Nolan (Memento, Insomnia and of course Batman Begins)
yeah I know, as if this body of work just screams greatness.

People call him a talented director. And looking back at the previous installments, I can only see Nolan's approach as very positive. In fact, I think Batman 'needs' Nolan.

Mmm never really looked at it the same way as you obviously do, what a morbid image!

I think Spielberg was referring to ET at the time and that quote succinctly sums up my feelings too.

So I gather you didn't read what came after my name in the post? There is nothing in your reply that I disagree with.

Fact remains that neither Spielberg nor Welles were making remakes of those movies.

Semantics. I said what I said because I thought you were saying that "the future doesn't look bright" in response to Alex (still with me?) because Nolan was trying to emulate/imitate other directors. I did read your full post, but you said "imitate" which I guess took to be a derogatory remark about directors who emulate other filmmakers. But I see your point now in that he is merely imitating the wrong directors (which I disagree with) not that he is wrong to emulate past filmmakers in general.

Now, bonus points for whoever can translate what I just said.

Fact remains that neither Spielberg nor Welles were making remakes of those movies

Whether he's making a remake, sequel or prequel is irrelevant. A movie is a movie is a movie and any story can be told in an infinite number of ways.

Actually...

I was saying that if any story can be told in an inifite number of ways (very true words), why follow so closely the steps of the original? Why not exploit the possibilities? Isn't that what remakes are for?

Morlock- who reckons he can venture a pretty good guess, but would like to be sure exactly how "New Superman Copycats Reeve?"

I don't think it's a matter of following "so closely the steps of the original" as there being consistency in a film franchise. It's a good thing if this new Superman film continues with and expands the storyline from the first two movies. In this regards, Singer should look to the older movies for inspiration. It's a bad thing if this new Superman movie is a virtual paint-by-numbers remake of the original. In this regard, Singer should "exploit the possibilities" and take the movie in new directions while also remaining faithful to the previous films at the same time.

In reply to the topic there's always going to be the two people at the opposite ends of the spectrum

Shouldn't he look like Reeve?

or

Shouldn't they be trying to do something new?

I see. So that's where we disagree. So strongly.

oh I don't? and why not? Where is it that Batman is NOT trained the martial arts?? If you say Batman doesn't have a sort of attitude... then well.... I just can't comment on that...
