I went for Signs even though I love parts of CEOT3K and WotW. I just tend to be able to listen through Howard's score all the way through. That, and the fact that the opening track has got to be one of my all time favorite opening credit cues...

That's a really hard choice. And it doesn't help that I've only seen/heard 5 of the options. So I won't vote yet. But out of the ones I have heard, I'll go with WOTW for my favourite, ususally because my favourite score is whichever one I'm listening to most at the time. But I reckon the best is CE3K (which isn't what you asked, but I still wanted to say it).

I think WotW might be the best but I have to say my favorite was Signs. The whole score being based on such a versitale three-note motif is just a wonderful idea, the main titles are incredible, as are the Hand of Fate tracks.

Despite the brilliance of most of the others you mention, the granddaddy for me is still CE3K...

I voted for Mars Attacks! - there is a level of sophistication in this score that I feel is missed by most. Possibly my favorite Elfman score of all time. :) Although, realistically - it's probably tied with Close Encounters, with WoTW Running behind that - Which I'm going to see tomorrow! :)

Well, ID4 is one of my favorite non-Williams scores period. But WotW is growing on me and I just haven't listened to it enough to make a fair decision just yet.

Signs, followed by The Day The Earth Stood Still. I just never thought of CE3K as an alien invasion score.

I'll have to give a vote for David Arnold's ID4 as well, the only other soundtracks I've listened to more are the Star Wars ones.

Reading over this poll, I don't quite get all the love for War of the Worlds. It's a good score no doubt, but to rank it as a favorite less than 3 weeks after it's release seems to be like a knee jerk reaction. That being said, I also can't believe that it's a more loved score than The Day The Earth Stood Still. Yes, I went with Close Encounters, but to reduce Herrmann's achievement to those of Fire in the Sky just doesn't seem right.

Not in my opinion, but - as you see, I voted for CE3K, but then again Roger Federer is a great Tennis Player....not in the league of Borg, but doesn't stop him being great....

Greg - who thinks the WOTW backlash is starting, but will champion it nevertheless....it's a cracking work...

CE3K wasn't exactly about 'nasty alliens', so my vote goes to ID4.... the ENTIRE score, not the half-assed cd

My vote goes to ID4 because I don't have WOTW and have not heard it yet. David Arnold's score is pure magic and is a enjoy to listen to.

Hmm, Close Encounters of the third Kind and The Day the Earth Stood Still tied.

Close Encounters is a level above all of the other scores on this list.

I like Signs, Day the Earth Stood Still, and WOTW, all very much.

I'm not fond of ID4, Mars Attacks is entertaining, and I can't critique Fire in the Sky or Invaders from Mars, as I don't know those.

CE3K does not have nasty aliens either....

Well, the aliens of CE3K do abduct people and preserve their age, then drop them back off when their families have died of old age. That always seemed pretty nasty to me.

they don't preserve their age, they simply time travel.

I thought that it had to do with Einstein's theory that if you travel as fast as the speed of light you wouldn't age. In the movie they say "Einstein was right". The age preservation would just be a side effect of traveling so fast, but still, they had some of those people since WWI, then dropped them off in the late 70's. I would hate that. Barry had a short trip. Lucky little guy. I think there is something scary and sinister about the abduction thing.

I am sad to tell this but I prefer David Arnold's score for Independance Day better than any John Williams' score for an alien invasion movie.

By the way, if CE3K is considered as an alien invasion, why not E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial... ? I am not sure...
