Recommended Posts

I have the 'Spanish Bootleg', but since i dont have the movie, and i only have seen it once, i'm not cappable of assembling the complete score as Jerry Goldsmith intended.

Has anyone done this?

Thanks ROTFLMAO

Just get the single disc DVD, it has the complete original isolated score as Jerry meant it for the film. I also have the Silva Screen CD, which has some alternate takes from what is heard in the isolated score - try to track that one down.

Everything on the Silva CD is on the isolated track, with the possible exception of The Alien Planet. That may be a combination of two different versions or another alternate.

I can't remember "Acid Test" in the isolated track, but I'll listen to it again to find out.

Are the alternates in the SP bootleg rightly named (i mean they are true alternates, and i should use the one in the movie)?

Seeing your responses, it may be that the film versions are the alternates and the unused cues are the original Jerry intended?

Which mix looks more whole?

aw i cant decide...

the film version contains the 1st versions of the Goldsmith music or not?

Plus there are unused cues i think, that are on the alternates disc, i dont know where they go chronologically ;)

The film contains versions Goldsmith never greenlighted, including stuff from Freud. The original CD contains the original score as Goldsmith intended it, and that's what appears on the first track of the old iso score too. The second, "alternate" track contains rewrites Goldsmith did after his original cues, plus the Freud stuff etc.

Marian - who must re-burn his CDs as they have become unplayable.

:) The Ghost and the Darkness (Jerry Goldsmith)

So i must use the version 2 in the Composer's cut, instead of using the Goldsmith music in the Director's butch?

So the tracklist would be like this (using names from the bootleg): (please help me with the correct order, i put some just seeing its place in the second disc, with missed parts from the movie)

1. 20th Century Fox Logo

2. Main Title - The Nostromo (version 2)

3. Hypersleep (version 2)

4. The Landing

5. The Derelict (version 2)

6. the Jockey (version 2) <- here i use version 2 or 3?

7. The Egg Chamber (version 2)

8. The Egg (1 or 2?)

9. Back to the Nostromo

10. Face Hugger (version 2)

11. Acid Test

12. Study's

13. Ejecting Kane's Body

14. Looking for the Face Hugger

15. Search (version 2)

16. Brett's Demise

17. The Shaft, Part 1

18. The Shaft, Part 2

19. The Droid, Part 1

20. The Droid, Part 2

21. Parker & Lambert's Demise

22. The Corridor

23. "I Got You"

24. Detonation Sequence

25. The Shuttle (version 2)

26. Breakaway - "Signing Off" (version 2)

27. End Titles (version 2)

yarrgh...

I think DISC ONE contains what one would call the isolated track (scott's cut)

disc two contains the rejected score and some alternates...

Luke, who found another 2CD set, which has the film score with freud but without classical pieces and the main title is the correct, not film version.

Manuel, totally lost ????

Manuel.

I'm no expert on the subject of the Alien score.

I have a bootleg CD that i'm happy enough with and have not spend much time trying to sort out the whole issue of what Jerry intended and what ended up in the film and were.

a bootleg which has the complete score as he intended it in the film.

Now i know why you didnt care. Heck, you have it!

Could you post names and track times so i can check with mine?

Pleeeeease

Luke, all of your problems would be solved if you bought this DVD. There are so many bootlegs out there and alternates it's difficult to piece together what you have since we can't actually listen to the music. Having the DVD will help. Trust me.

Neil

P.S. Note that the DVD I linked to is the original ALIEN DVD, the one with the isolated music tracks, and not the 2003 disc with the "Director's" cut.

5.Egg Chamber (original version) - 2:34

6.Face Hugger (original version) - 3:04

8.Studies - 1:03

9.Overhead - 0:53

11.The Cat - 0:58

12. Brett's Death - 2:05

13.The Shaft - 4:24

14.The Droid - 3:25

15.Parker's Death - 1:48

16.The Corridor - 1:02

17.I Got You - 1:53

18.Sleepy Alien (original version) - 3:02

19.Breakaway (original version) / End Credits - 6:03

Additional and alternate cues:

20.Main Title (revised) - 4:07

21.Hypersleep (revised) - 2:43

22.The Alien Planet, part 2 (revised) - 3:21

23.Egg Chamber (revised) - 0:57

24.Face Hugger (revised) - 3:04

25.The Corridor (alternate) - 2:21*

26.Sleepy Alien (revised) - 3:08

27.Breakaway (revised) - 3:01

Total time: 75:18

This assembly includes all of the original Goldsmith material from both isolated tracks.

The isolated score track repeats 'The Landing' twice. They're both exactly the same take.

+Although this sequence contains around eight and a half minutes of music in the film, some of it is tracked from the revised Main Title. I've removed the tracked material.

*I'm not sure what this is. It isn't in the finished film and does not appear to be sequenced correctly on the isolated track. It may be an alternate version of 'The Shaft, Part 2'.

I'll see if I can dig out my breakdown of the original album.

It doesn't really fit the detonation sequence or the corridor sequence, but it does use motivic material from the 'Shaft' sequence. I can't really say anything about it's true origins without seeing the original sketches and parts.

Manuel, I'm interested in your results, could you please post your track list of how you arranged the cues from your Spanish bootleg (with the names as they appear on that one)? Many thanks!

I want to know something.I saw that Alien DVd with iso score for 15$ today.I'm not sure to buy it.I want to know if in the unreleased/alternate cues that have never been released before, there is more soft melodic stuff like the cue "Hypersleep",or just more of the frantic scary action music?

About 15 years ago,in a period of stupidity,I sold several of my score c.d.'s to a used record shop.Alien was one of them

27. End Titles (version 2)

I actually ended up buying the "Legacy" edition of the Alien DVD, ripping both the composer's proposed score AND the "actual" score (although that is up for debate), and then putting them on separate cds. What's so confusing at times is that the original released soundtrack album has some of the same tracks, only their placement in the film is different than what Goldsmith intended, and the track titles have been swapped here and there! A sad mess, and with Goldsmith's passing, can a real record label pay him some respect and release this thing legitimately for all of us?!

My track list:

Composer's Score-

01. Main Title - The Nostromo (Album Version)

02. Awakening

03. The Landing

04. The Alien Planet

05. The Egg Chamber

06. The Face Hugger

07. Acid Test

08. Ripley Confronts Ash

09. Search for the Face Hugger

10. Departure

11. Kane's Funeral

12. False Alarm

13. "Here Kitty-Kitty"...

14. Brett Finds Jonesy

15. Brett's Demise

16. Mother

17. The Shaft

18. Ash Attacks

19. The Fate of Lambert & Parker

20. Self-Destruct Sequence

21. Saving Jonesy

22. Ripley's Run

23. "I Got You..."

24. Stowaway

25. Showdown

26. End Titles (Album Version)

"Actual" score (again, very debatable!):

01. Main Title-The Nostromo (Screen Version)

02. Rise and Shine

03. The Alien Planet

04. Kane's Discovery

05. The Face Hugger

06. Acid Test

07. Demise of Dallas

08. Ash Revealed

09. Breakaway

10. Final Confrontation

11. End Title (Screen Version-- Symphony #2 ["Romantic"] by Howard Hanson)

If you listen closely during playback of the "composer's score" version, you can hear background studio comotion in between takes, and right before the track intended for the final showdown between Ripley and the Alien, you can hear someone (maybe Lionel Newman?) sort of pepping everyone up before the take.
