Richard Donner and Superman II

Can someone explain to me exactly what happened to Richard Donner with Superman II? What I know (or think I know) is that Donner had finished 70-80% of the film, then something happened, they kept some of it, but refilmed most of it with Richard Lester and his "comic books are supposed to be funny" cR@p, and didn't even credit Donner? And people are asking for Donner's version on DVD?

I'm confused. Any help?

Superman The movie and II were shot simultaneously, but deadlines were tight and they left II parked and urged donner to finish I. I think then they hired lester to finish II (maybe when donner was still doing I?)

Lester did not even met Gene Hackman. Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve were upset with warner. Marlon Brando banned WB to release his footage due to monetary reasons...

Originally II started where I left (i think the rockets in I were going to release the Phantom zone trio)

I dont know why Donner was fired, but im sure neil can provide a link to a site that has an extensive review, i have read it , but i dont have it :/

And people want the DVD release because i think there is proof that donner's footage is stored at WB, not lost.

ADVERTISING: My Superman II covers are finished and availabe to download. Run for it where supplies last!

The best site for Superman info can be found here.

Everything you need to know about those movies and more can be found there.

Agreed. I was up late one night when I first discovered the site. After reading about Superman II for a good while, I looked up at the clock and saw that it was 7:00 AM! ;)

Needless to say, it's some interesting reading.
