WHat is the highest selling soundtrack?

Titanic? Star Wars? Grease (any soundtrack that is comprised without a musical score and purely of songs is not a soundtrack in my opinion)?

Any one know for sure?

One big reason that the Titanic album sold so well was the fact that the song My Heart Will Go On was on the CD. Celine Dion really helped to sell the soundtrack.

I'm afraid that's where our opinions could hardly differ more. I'll admit the film was actually quite good, and had a profound effect on me back then (I was around 13 at the time, and I'll also admit I got Dion's song on tape - yes, cassette), but Horner's score I just can't stand. Way too many synths and I'm surprised they didn't break the anvil from so many uses ;)

Probably the same way the LSO managed to not break the necks of the violins and cellos from all the banging in "Aliens." :P

One of the most unattractive things on Titanic soundtrack is the synthezised choir. I just hate it. And the love theme in the form of the Dion song received so much playing in the radio and just about everywhere that it made it disgusting and unbearable. The cues that have it I usually skip if I listen to the CD at all. It has been about two years since I tried to listen to the score but gave up after track 5(I was nausiated by the music).

-Incanus who is still quite unsure how in hell did he come in posession of the Titanic and Back to Titanic double CD set?- :? :D

I disagree the synth is simple but very effective.

Matter of taste. I do not even know where my hatred for synths originates but I can't stand them in large quantaties or overtly used. Or even in smaller quantaties now that I think about it. This leads to the fact that I hate almost all the music Vangelis has done for the movies.

-Incanus who would never have given the Oscar to Chariots of Fire in 1981 and is very angry for the Academy for not choosing Raiders instead-

I believe the synth choir was used because it was cheaper and faster.

Joe is having computer issues. He is fine and will be back as soon as possible.

It's a very good score for a very good film.

And Horner deserved his Oscar that year, without any doubt.

Over Jerry's L.A. Confidential? How could you?

He won 2 that year, Steef. He could choke on one Oscar but he'd be rescued via anal surgery with the other one. Damn those Beverly Hills paramedics!

Going backwards, is it safe to assume that Gone with the Wind was the highest selling soundtrack before Star Wars or Titanic?

Was the OST even for sale back in the late 30's?

Probably not, but I assume it would have been out at some point by the early 60's. I'll have to do some research.

I'm afraid the honour went to THE SOUND OF MUSIC before Jaws, Star Wars or even Gone with the Wind came along.

"A doe...a deer and female deer. Ray..a drop of golden sun"......D'oh!

Hitch, who had the chance to direct THE SOUND OF MUCUS but decided to do TORN CURTAIN using the same material used by Julie Andrews to make clothing for the children.

I wonder....

Was Horner paid well for Titanic... because I know that the film--prior to the release, had many financial problems because no one wanted to put any money in to.

My guess would be Horner wasn't paid all that well and it would be cheaper to go synth than full real... I dunno...
