robthehand 3
I'm just interested to know: a) why it happens and B) which ones it happened toI mean releases like the original Jaws release and The Spy Who Loved Me.
Incanus 5,519
Well a) the main reason was money. In the olden days the the American union recordings were subject to new use fees amounting to repayment 100% of the musicians fees earned during the initial recording, if the same performance was issued as a soundtrack album. B) It was actually cheaper to rerecord the score album even over seas at London or some where else than to use the existing original music. So many socres like Dracula, Jaws, The Fury and Patton , Masada, Under Fire, Omen II:Damien etc. were just recorded again and the composers made modifications to the music and combined cues and made a whole new interpretation of the music for the commercial album. Jim Ware 428
No, CE3K is not a re-recording.Re-recording of film scores for albums tends not to happen too often nowadays. The most recent example I can think of is Philip Glass' The Hours.
Unlucky Bastard 7,765
A more prominant case is Damien: Omen II, which was recorded for the film in LA, but re-recorded in London for the album. Thankfully, we have both versions on the new Varese album.
nightscape94 965
The original The Fury album was also a rerecording specifically for the score release. I don't believe any of those original tracks (which is also represented on the 2nd disc of the recent Sarabande release) were featured in the actual movie. They were all recorded separately as concert tracks for the LP.Tim

Morn 7
The unions are ruining everything in amerca, actually making the costs prohibitive for many classical music recordings also. They'll stick to the popular stuff.

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,251
According to Rober Townsends linernotes for Damien: The Omen II, John Williams Dracula was re-recorded for album release.
Incanus 5,519
That was already in my first post (and the info was from the same liner notes ). Perhaps score titles in italics would help to to get that noticed.

The original album was recorded during the Superman scoring sessions, or so I've heard.Marian - *ahem* Jaws *ahem*.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,251
Then why do the cues from The Fury sound a lot better then Superman?
Jim Ware 428
Superman was recorded during September, October and November 1978. The Fury (the album re-recording) was recorded much earlier, in February 1978.
