And the Academy Award goes to...

Gustavo Santaolalla for Brokeback Mountain

My logic is: he will probably be the "weird" name among the nominees. Perhaps Alexandre Desplat will be nominated too for Syriana.

My point is that no matter how good Williams' output may have been this year, there is surely going to be a "weird" name among his "competitors". And the Academy likes those...

Roald, your theory is interesting, but flawed.

Ennio Morricone would have had many more Oscars.

And Alan Menken would have none.

The theory applies to the last 10 years or so.

Morricone has been very active in the last 10 years or so.

And has he been nominated....?

Howard Shore is a weird name?

There are ALWAYS exceptions....

But these are weird:

Luis Enríquez Bacalov

Gabriel Yared

Nicola Piovani

Stephen Warbeck (a little weird)

John Corigliano

Tan Dun

Jan A. P. Kaczmarek

All winners of the past 10 years...

Stefancos- who trusts his own opinion over that of several thousand professional Hollywood film makers.

Implying that others take the opinion of the Academy over their own? :(

After hearing Geisha,I will be disapointted,if Williams doesnt win(or the Sith).

And Alan Menkens statues are one of the biggest jokes by the academy(or the return of the king)

And the prequel scores are Magnificent!

Williams won't even be nominated for Sith.

It's a Star Wars film, no one in the Academy seems to dare to approach those

Not as big a joke as that comment.

The  the prequel scores are Magnificent!

Wrong, sex is magnificent, the Prequel scores are just enjoyable.

If he's such a brilliant composer, then why has he pretty much only ever worked for Disney?

That really doesn't make any sense. The music he wrote for Disney more than proves that Menken is indeed very talented. His ability to write songs is amazing, not to mention Hunchback of Notre Dame's brilliant underscore.

And Little Shop of Horrors is not without its charm.

I think his lack of recent output is due to the continuing of stage adaptations of Disney musicals after the successes of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. The Little Mermaid is definitely happening, while Aladdin should follow. He does, after all, have to write new songs for them.

About Williams: if he doesn't win for anything, I hope Doyle does (while simultaneously hoping he doesn't).

Menken has won too many Oscars. He is a songwriter that is all and not that good IMO. I hate his music for Disney films. Academy seems to be sucker for that kind of music though.

Oscar for Williams! It is about time.

Looks like the gay Gone with the Wind movie will sweep the boards of both the Golden Balls...I mean Globes and also the Academy Awards.

I will presenting the Best Catering Awards at Wolfgang Pucks on January 14th 2006 if any catering buffs are out there. I can guarantee you that Wolfy does the best milk and sandwiches in town.

I'm sorry, but I really love Menken's work for Disney. He did an amazing job for them writing some truly classic songs. Colors of the Wind, God Help the Outcast, Part of your World, Belle... Nothing wrong with those. He's a better songwriter than Williams, although his underscore music makes me wanna go ... zzzzZZZzzzzzz....

Stefancos- who trew the Menken comment in just to piss of Ender.

You used to be so good at it. Now you're just just lazy.

If he's such a brilliant composer, then why has he pretty much only ever worked for Disney?

Contractual reasons, first. And second, his interests are in musical theater, not film scoring.

And Little Shop of Horrors is not without its charm.

And King David is the best musical never put on a stage. And you'd think Tim Rice could never top Evita.

I think his lack of recent output is due to the continuing of stage adaptations of Disney musicals after the successes of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. The Little Mermaid is definitely happening, while Aladdin should follow. He does, after all, have to write new songs for them.

Not really, he's been working on more than half a dozen projects per year - he just has a big problem (like a lot of Broadway people, lately) getting it released. He's writing a lot of shows right now and some money-ensuring film scores, as you can see here. He's also very concerned to get King David to be performed on Broadway, but it's too big and too expensive to get it there - shame, as it is one of the best musicals ever written, and it turned out Disney only wanted it to show off his new theater.

Edit twice: Damn quote codes driving me crazy.

Maybe you should listen to "The Wolf Attack" and "Transformation" from "Beauty and the Beast" again.

And also "The Cave of Wonders" from "Aladdin."

And also "Sanctuary!" from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

And any song by Williams (sans lyrics).

Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas (the instrumental version) is, perhaps, one of the catchiest tunes I've ever heard. Once I get it stuck in my head, it won't go away for a while. And now since I've written about it, it is, yet again, stuck in my head :?

Cursed!

(Santa is here again, yes!)

Having heard all four of Williams' scores this year, it's fairly clear that Geisha is his only likely nomination. I think the score is beautiful.

You've heard Munich? Wow....

Skimming this thread, I have this to say:

I love the Memoirs score.

I love a lot of Menken's work.

I find it strange that he hasn't worked outside of Disney.

I will refrain from posting my opinion about this year's Oscar race, as it had a disastrous effect last year.

Menken is a musical guy. No other studio is making original musicals, live-action or animated.

Plus, he has a contract with them. I remember reading that he signed to five Disney musicals after "Aladdin." That means he has one more film to do for them. But maybe whatever he's working on for Broadway counts towards that.

But he should only write a musical if Stephen Schwartz tags along. He's the best living choice for lyricist.

I prefer Rice to Schwartz. Schwartz did fine work on Hunchback and Pocahontas, but I think his lyrics for Prince of Egypt are mostly terrible.

Regarding the Golden globes.Best Score is almost the only nomination and there using it in their TV ads.Maybe THAT award will be the sympathy vote for Geisha.

I know the'll toss a bone to this film at the Oscars, why not best score?

You know what was a joke award? Last years award to finding neverland. Wow, wat a piece of crap. it was ridiculously simplistic and not that special. if they wanted to give scores to stuf like that, why not the notebook, which was very similar? last year, the winner should have been either Passion or PoA, imo. Finding neverland? wtf. he didnt write those variations either!

but of course, it prolly was because he had the wierdest name.

Well, for Geisha voters will be like,oh it kind of dragged on and was superficial, but it was so beautiful we GOT to give it something.I can't give it best picture, but the music and costumes were nice so I'll vote for those...

Williams still got a better chance than PoA.

Actually, I found his melodies in that movie to be lacking.

And let's not talk about "Finding Neverland" again. It was a one-time thing. Nobody's business but ours.

Maybe the old age sympathy vote will start kicking in.

Yeah, like it did for Jerry Goldsmith...

His last nomination was in 1998, when he was still in his 60's, hardly an old age for a film composer.

He was 69. That IS old; filmcomposer or not.

For regular human beings, yes. But for a film composer who shows no sign of slowing down, not really.

It's still amazing to me that Timeline and Looney Tunes Back In Action were composed by someone in the late stages of cancer.

I agree. I miss Jerry's output deeply by the way.
