How Big Is Your John Williams Collection?

Damo

Recommended Posts

Well,it goes on the bottom shelf usually which is a bit taller .It didn't fit upright at the spot for the picture .

Ahh okay understood then. :P

I just noticed those Star Wars CD's.

Greg, can you give us some in site on what those specifically are?

Anthology CD's, my own edits, a couple of expanded versions, "Revelations" and one or two others....nothing earth-shattering, I'm afraid!

Oh, gotcha.

I love it when people list the 50 albums they own and label their collection "meager". Allow me to give you guys proper perspective (in alphabetical order):

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Catch Me If You Can

E.T. (2002 Edition)

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Jaws (2000 Edition)

Jurassic Park

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Star Wars

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

The Terminal

It's quality - not quantity - that counts

Nice collection.

Thank you for cheering me up.

EDIT: (After looking at Koray's signature)

....I cannot think of anything to say.... Is that even legal?

Don't listen to Koray, Nick. If you want to buy the whole Superman FSM set, then go for it. The whole thing is worth owning.

Damn right....and the presentation of Williams' music in the Blue Box is far superior to the Rhino CD anyway - which is remarkable considering how good the Rhino version is....just goes to show how much care was put in to the Blue Box! It raised the bar for such releases by about a mile and a half....and is WELL worth saving up for, Nick. You won't regret a penny.

Ken Thorne's scores are an inferior re-hash of Williams score

Alexander Courage score is pretty neat

Exactly. The Superman: The Movie 2-disc set in the Blue Box is amazing. The Superman II disc is meh. It's really a pretty poor score. Superman III is much better as Ken Thorne seems to have been given a little more freedom to compose his own music and not just rehash Williams' themes. The Superman IV 2-discs are a real delight. Great stuff! I haven't listened to the 7th disc (scores to the animated Superman series). I'll probably get around to it eventually, if I'm bored.

Why do you have all the boring Williams c.d.s and missing most of the really great ones?

That's obvious, dear Watson. I simply prefer different kind of Williams. I rank Seven Years in Tibet (one of my favourite of all time) over Indiana Jones or Superman (which I do like, just not exceptionally). The same goes for Amistad, Memoirs and couple of others. I don't enjoy HP & PS too much, that's why I only own CoS and PoA... I have not been a great fan of Jurassic Park either - I prefer The Lost World. And so on...

My forthcoming (whatever that means) Williams-related purchases will definitely include Treesong, The Lost World, The River (also one of my favourite scores of his) and Stepmom (sic!). I seriously reconsider buying CEot3K too.

All in all, I have 86 CDs of JW's music (that means sountracks, Boston Pops CDs, some concert works ...). For my standards, it's a neat collection, though I'm well aware that it can't compete with some of the other guys' collections by a long shot. But it works for me and I'm happy with it. And, of course, any chance to add a new CD to it makes me the happiest guy in the world. :)

The question one should ask is: "How big was your Williams collection?" After burning the majority of his music to keep Alma and myself warm, the only scores I've retained that are worth any considerable merit are

The Concerti (you know them already)

Memoirs of a Geisha

The Accidental Tourist

Schindler's List

Stepmom

Presumed Innocent

In other words, the depressing music.

Presumed Innocent is depressing indeed. It's one of the most boring JW's scores I have ever heard... Except the closing credits, of course, the only track I enjoy.

My John Williams collection is considerable. I'm lacking only a few of his official soundtrack CD releases. I own all of his albums with the Boston Pops and dozens of re-recordings/compilations/arrangements by other ensembles.

I should come up with a list of the titles I don't own... yet.

Here's a nice picture of 2 priests performing an exorcism on a young girl. Luckily the bed remained intact.

I'm sorry that does not make any sense at all KM.

Re:your Williams collection. What is "Story Of A Woman"? I've naver heard of it. Also, do you know anything about a T.V. movie made in '81, or '82, I think, called "Raggedy Anne And Andy"? It starred Sissy Spacek, and was roumoured to have a score by Mr. Williams.

Side question for you guys! Is the Fury Deluxe edition worth spending upwards of 100 dollars on? Secondly, are the sony remastered and rereleased versions of the special edition original star wars trilogy soundtracks better sound quality that merits buying them? Thanks!

The Sony editions of the Original Trilogy are exactly those of the RCA Special Editions. However, if you want extensive liner notes I recommend hunting down the RCA Special Editions.
