Sequel Scores That Beat The "Original"

In the JP vs. The Lost World thread, I was fairly surprised that TLW seemed to be the popular choice. I just wondered about other sequel scores that beat the "original" score. For me, Jaws 2 is a better album than Jaws, but I haven't seen the film for so long (thank God) that I can't say which is better in the film. Series like James Bond don't count.

(And can we leave Star Wars and Empire off as well, please 8O).

Any thoughts?

I used to think that too but now, after years and years of consideration, I think Jaws (the original album) is better than Jaws 2. The Shark Cage Fugue gives it that little bit of extra class.

I like Home Alone 2: Lost in New York better than the first.

I don' know, maybe because of the second we have more material available.

The second Pirates of the Carribean will be better than the first one. I mean, is it possible to get any worse?

Before anyone else will name Indiana Jones, I repeat that I don't ever a favorite one. Also, which is the sequel than which? Are you talking about the scores only or the movies too? Because in that case, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom would be before than Raiders of the Lost Ark . 8O

For these purposes, I would call ToD a sequel. 8O

Put it this way, I'd never call it the original. :joy:

I never got the big deal around Jaws 2, I'm not that thrilled with the album, except for 'The Catamaran Race'.

I'd say Hannibal and Red Dragon are more interesting listens than The Silence of the Lambs.

More interesting listens, yes. But I think that those three scores are a rare example of three scores in a series, by three different composers, being totally and entirely different from one another, yet all being excellent in their own way. I'd have a hard time picking a favorite among them.

As for me.....

I like Spiderman 2 more than the first. Shrek 2 is much more fun and much better than the first. Legend of Zorro more than the first. The Final Conflict is my favorite of the Omen scores. Toy Story 2 more than the the original.

Let [us] live in peace and harmony together and enjoy the fatty flesh of dead pig.
You know, that can be applied to many women ... ?

I prefer my "pigs" live and not too fatty.

The Goblet Of Fire is a better score then The Chamber Of Secrets.

Better score, yes. But CoS is better music.

Morlock's second statement is the only correct one in these quotes.

GOF is not a better score nor is the music better than COS.

Huh? JP beat TLW by 25 votes.

Tim

Really? Oh well... :)

I was surprised to see how many people preferred it, even if it wasn't a majority.

I respect your opinions on this matter.

That does not make them right however.

Stefancos- who has passed his Judgement.

Stefancos finally says what I've been thinking!

Seriously though, GoF is a better score. CoS is dull and boring in the film. Rehashing previous music in the most unimaginative and dull way possible. The score actually detracts from the film in a few parts. I can't think of a moment like that in GoF.

Album to Album comparison is entirely diffrent.

I disagree. I think it a minor treasure- a JW score written without any time to second guess himself. All kinds of concepts of nobility, horror, fun, pompousness, mischievousness, dizzying adventure, thrown into a cauldron without being let to properly cook. You've got a rather lavish collection of melodies and ideas, some great, some good, some less than good. Frankely, CoS is a relatively negligable movie of a relatively negligable book, that I'm glad JW had a chance to produce a score unlike any other. Yes, as a Williams score, it is subpar. But as a collection of ideas, based on the storyand character of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, I could not imagine a better album.

I was talking about both.

To expand on CoS as a score, specifically- I think it is a fine score. Two or three scenes that IMO were not particulaly well scored, and that's it. The themes, when used in the film, were quite effective, and the variations on the themes, new and old were put to good use. The Chamber of Secrets theme is used superbly in the film, and I think the use of the Nimbus 2000 theme in a comical form was quite good. 'Dueling the Basilisk' and 'Reunion of Friends' were also excellent in the film. The Flying Car and The Dueling Club scenes are as superbly scored as any scenes in the series. I think that the worst that can be said about the score it that it's a patchwork. Not precisely the standard we've come to expect from JW, but still very good.

But what about the abuse of the Stone motif? The Chamber theme was neglected when it would have been perfect for the Chamber entrance opening, climax in the diary etc. The destruction of Riddle's memory/diary was a sloppy patch-work of PS's climax.

There were too many missed opportunities in CoS

That cue is the biggest problem in the entire score, and the only crucial one, as far as I'm concerned. No way to explain the way it was scored. It's just all wrong.

.

The End Title is one of Williams most beautiful cues ever.

Not only that, but I recently discovered that the arrangements for those two rising statements of the Stone theme weren't original - an extremely similar statement was part of a Williams-arranged concert suite called "The Sorceror's Stone" that he wrote after PS. Obviously the orchestration is different (the arrangement was for a small ensemble), but the similarities are striking. Perhaps this was Ross' doing?

As much as I love Jerry Goldsmith's score to The Mummy, I have to say, I find that The Mummy Returns is better. One of my favorite action scores.

I used to think that The Mummy Returns was WAY better than The Mummy. Now that I have the complete scores to both I'm not so sure. The Mummy is really a brilliant action score.

Return of the King is better than The Two Towers (and as good as Fellowship).

Back to the Future part III is the best score of the trilogy.

Prisoner of Azkaban easily beats Chamber of Secrets, and is at the same level as Philosopher's Stone, although of a different flavor.

Let me state for the record that Steef is indeed not, I repeat, NOT a vegetarian. Just ask the Burger King staff in Rembrandt Square, Amsterdam. :P
