The OFFICIAL "Casino Royale" (2006) Thread

The whole purpose of Moore's bond seemed to be to be tongue-in-cheek, and rather silly anyway.

The humour in most of the Connery films was far more subtler and darker.

FRWL was very, very close to the film, although there's still no sign of SPECTRE at that point.

And there's this whole bit in the film where Bond goes to try and obtain the Lektor (named Spektor in the book) himself, whereas in the film it's basically handed to him, and it goes straight from him spending the night with Tatiana to them getting aboard the Orient Express.

Live and Let Die seems to have been sourced for at least three movies of the top of my head (License to Kill, For Your Eyes Only, and, obviously, Live and Let Die).

I'm having a blast reading these books I must say.

- Marc, somewhere halfway into chapter 3 of Dr. No.

I love the books....particularly some of the shorter stories such as "The Property of a Lady"....

As this is the Casino Royale thread, thought I would point out that I have the CD now, and rate it far higher than either DAD or TWINE.....I know that the style is different, but this seems to be much more of a cohesive whol;e rather than a lot of individual tracks.....

Whether this will transfer through to the movie or not I don't know - but I guess we can hope! The signs are good....

The whole regional thing in Itunes is such a crock! There's no reason for it in this day and age. Be it the US, Canada, Europe, to a hut somewhere in the jungles of Africa... If we can pay for the tunes we should be allowed to purchase the tunes... It's not like we couldn't just go get the stuff some other way "COUGH" bit Torrent.... But I won't, I would prefer to actually buy the music. Sigh someday....

Anyone heard the score for Casino Royale yet? Is it good?

Yes it's good. Definitely worth buying in my opinion.

Anyone got the extra tracks already?

I've been wondering the same myself..

They aren't really worth it. As far as I'm concerned, the only one really worth getting is "I'm Yours", but you have to buy the entire album to get any of the bonus tracks. I really wish I had just went out and bought the actual CD.

Casino Royale is a strong listen, but, seriously, it's short on memorability. The new theme isn't anything stunning really. It sounds like some rejected idea from The World IS Not Enough. Some nice action tracks, even they are somewhat directionless.

Karol, who thinks that the opening track from TND is still to be beaten.

I saw the film this morning.

Excellent stuff! A very good Bond film, and a pretty fine piece of entertainment in its own right. The silly jokes and lame puns have been (thankfully) toned down, without stretching to the ultra-serious nature of the Dalton films. It's very different from any other Bond film, as we expected. And by the way, that Scarface shot actually makes sense in the context of the film. ;)

The music ranged from poor (the action scenes) to adequate (the tense, ambient cues).

Craig is an excellent Bond, a lot of those "boycott Casino Royale" losers are going to look very silly.

The dialogue is much better than in recent films, but could still use a little tidying up. The title song works a lot better in the film than it does on its own - and the title sequence is absolutely amazing! Easily Kleinman's best effort yet.

I'm glad that a decent editor (Stuart Baird) was brought on board for this film, unlike the guy who edited Die Another Day to make it seem like a 2 hour trailer. However, I felt that some scenes early in the film could have been cut a bit, they seem to go on a long time.

The grils are good, but none of their characters are as developed as I had hoped. These are minor criticisms though. The action is mostly very good and believable, especially the vertigo-inducing chase on the construction site.

The opening sequence is well done, and very nicely shot.

Mads Mikkelsen is a good villain. The character of Mathis has a few rather confusing twists, but I guess they'll be resolved in the next film (which I hear is a direct continuation).

Overall, a very entertaining film - not as good as the classics like From Russia With Love and Goldfinger, but landing firmly in the "very good" catergory.

I hate to say this, but Casino Royale may very well be my least favourite Arnold Bond score. It's definitely more mature than Die Another Day, but there is just too much atmospheric music to make the album a good listen. It may work in the film, but the album is boring (and too long).

Plus, it seems like Arnold's action cues are getting more and more uninspired. Miami International for instance is very reminiscent of new age John Williams; orchestral mayhem that doesn't go anywhere. The only difference is that David Arnold isn't anywhere near the skills of Williams.

Any everything after that is downhill? Sorry, that's just ridiculous.

Not it's not. All that's saying is that "White Knight" is Arnold's best Bond cue, and I agree with that.

I saw some clips last week. One of the clips was from the crane sequence (the opening scene I believe), and the music was so frantic it just became... a bit silly. ;)

Looking forward to seeing the film, though. Hope that part is a bit better in context.

I didn't mean that TWINE and DAD are bad, but TND is better than TWINE and TWINE is better than DAD, wouldn't you agree with that? And CR ... well, it's a more interesting listen than DAD, but I don't think it's "better".

Well, i just got back from seeing the film, and i liked it very much. It's the best in a long time. Pretty much like the book after the first 3rd, mostly just different settings (and changing the game of baccarat to poker was only natural considering how popular it is now).

The music is dissapointing in places, but there's a couple of cues that scream John Barry rather than Arnold, which i loved. And what's with the titles of cues spoiling the film? Sure, i knew what was going to happen in a vague sense cos i've read the book, but some people will buy the soundtrack knowing little of the plot and see the title of track 23 and have the film ruined before they see the film. At least with the Star Wars prequels anyone without their head in the sand will expect Anakin's Betrayal. But for this, lets's use a little common sense.

Back to the film, it really is Bond Begins, a real back to basics (with a couple of stupid little gadgets and plenty of product placement), and an excellent new Bond in Daniel Craig.

Casino Royale has smashed a Bond box office record, taking more in its first day of release than any previous 007 film, says Columbia Pictures.

The film, which features Daniel Craig's first outing as the super-spy, sold £1.7m of tickets in the UK on Thursday.

The figure is more than twice as much as the previous record-holder, 2002's Die Another Day, took in its first day.

WOW! 8O Saw the film last night at a midnight screening. I loved every second of it! I felt so refreshed leaving the theater being completely satisfied; I wasn't let down in any way. I thought it was absolutely phenominal; Craig, Campbell, everybody! I can't wait to see it again!

I'm not a big Bond person (I've seen some Connery's and a couple of Brosnan's, but nothing in between) but members of my family are so I went with them to go see it last night. Overall I was pretty impressed. Craig really worked for me in what I knew of the character, and interaction with M was a highlight. Great, CG-less stunts. Much more intense than what I expected too, it worked really well. And personally I thought Arnold's score worked just fine.

And taking the temperature of the theater, which on opening night I'm sure was packed with Bond fans, the reaction was very positive. Quite a few lines and moments got a round of applause.

Wow. That was an amazing Bond movie. I was really harsh in judging Craig prior to the movie. I'm sold, this guy IS James Bond. The music worked fantastically in the film, too. THere were several sequences where I felt totally on the edge of my seat, which hasn't happened with the last few Bond movies. The fight scenes in this seemed a bit less brain-dead. Maybe because they were slightly more realistic (only slightly), but you actually cared about the fighting in this one.

The romance angle was beginning to be overplayed until the very end, when it sets up why Bond will become a truly cold-blooded killer in the next movies.

Absolutely great film, probably tbe best since Connery's days. The only disappointment was Q. I know they were going for a low-tech version of Bond, but they still could have included him somewhere, his back-and-forth with Bond is just as great as Bond and M's.

I'll have to get ahold of those extra tracks from iTunes...

EDIT: THe next one is to be a direct continuation? That's cool. I always thought the others would benefit from direct continuations. Do we know anything at all about the sequel yet? Is it going to be original, or are they going to start remaking all of the books that have already been made into movies?

The movie was great, however it seemed at times so non-James-Bond that I have still a problem with puting it in context of the previous 20. Nevertheless, all the actors were superb, action scenes were thrilling (especially the crane sequence), locations wonderfully shot and the main title scene was so gorgously tacky that it makes it one of the best the series (even though there were no women in it :/). The humor was scant, but really good, opposite to rather failed efforts to cheer up audience in some previous episodes.

I look forward the next part which should go on with some unresolved plots from this movie.

P.S.

Seeing actors at the exact location where Lucas shot "Attack of the Clones", was rather disconcerting, though ;)

That's what I thought at first, but it's obvious why (since I knew the end already).

They're not re-making the Fleming stories. Bond 22 and 23 will be original stories, and work as a sort of trilogy (all with Craig).

When you think about it, 22 has to be a direct continuation - there are quite a few plot points left unresolved - Mathis, for one.

The movie was great, however it seemed at times so non-James-Bond that I have still a problem with puting it in context of the previous 20.

That's what my initial impression was, but then I thought - DAD was them trying to make it overly 'BOND' (jam-packed with references and homages, to the point where there was virtually nothing original, apart from the RoboCop suit), and this seems to go to the opposite extreme. But, I'd take this over Die Another Day any day.

I loved the title sequence. ;)

Yes - it was humourous, rather than gag-packed, and I think that worked. At least there were no "yo mamma" style "jokes" in this one.

Again, some of the humour was distinctly un-Bond-like, but at the same time it was much better than the recent Bond-like efforts.

The humor worked. They didn't try too hard, but yes, sometimes Bond seemed a bit out of character, but I chalk that up to a new interpretation of him and a new actor.

My favorite line would probably be Bond asking for more torture by asking Le Chifre to "scratch" him "a little to the right" and then laughing and saying "Now the whole world will know you died scratching my balls."

The audience at my theater really reacted toa lot of the action sequences and lines. It's always good when a movie gets a reaction out of people.

The "-You're not my type. -Smart? - Single." line was a winner when I was watching the movie. The audience cheered so much to it. ;)

I personally loved all those small humorous scenes with Vesper - in the train, in the bathroom, at the casino. Even this "little finger" joke was delivered so well, that none mind crudeness of that.

Looks like the single for "You Know My Name" will be out December 14th (in the US). Hopefully it will include all three versions we're heard thus far.

That song was probably the best Bond song in ages.

Anyone hear about the "discrepancies" in the film take?

Sony is reporting LESS than other places are, and the distributor of Happy Feet is reporting MORE than others are, so Happy Feet beat Casino Royale by 100,000-2 million depending on your source.

Pretty crazy, eh? I'm still impressed with this movie, it totally has be excited for the franchise again.

There's no orchestral version, but rather a more orchestral version. There's the first version, the one that first popped up online (and is now available on iTunes). Then there's the film version, which was on Chris Cornell's MySpace for a while; it has a little more orchestration and a different vocal performance (along with the lyrical change of "this diamond" instead of "diamonds"). And then there's a purely rock version, which is just like the first version minus the orchestra, which, I believe, is currently on Cornell's MySpace.

Just as an FYI according to boxofficemojo Casino Royale as an estimate right now for it's opening weekend has racked in $82,800,000. It made $40,600,000 here in the United States. Else where in the world it made $42,200,000.

Bond is back with a bang. Go Daniel Craig you-sex-God-on-legs.

Hitch, who has been missing from the boards for a few weeks due to post-production work on his latest yet-to-be-titled movie.

I have seen it a couple of days ago. I have to say that I'm not impressed at all. A couple of nice sequences (the casino) and a couple of silly sequences (Madagascar chase). They don't work well in one film and the film is inconsistent in the end. Score is completely indistinct. Craig is ok, but then again he has nothing to do with the Bond that I know (not love, mind you) so it doesn't say much. A mixed bag, and too long.

Question for Bond enthusiasts that's been bouncing around in my mind since I saw the movie:

Since this is the closest thing there is to a Bond origin story, would have been more appropriate/made a better movie/etc if it had been set in a time period to make a consistent timeline with the other Bond films (50s maybe) rather than present day?
