The reason why MUNICH wasn't nominated at this years BAFTAs is that the DVD's sent to the BAFTA panel didn't work!

The movie is quite excellent. Here's what I said in the "Official Munich Score Thread":

I saw "Munich" last night. I've been worried since the summer that this film would look and feel rushed, since the production was extremely short.

It wasn't. Spielberg guided this thing along from start to finish with such a smooth hand that you would have thought he had all the time in the world.

Eric Bana. I can't say enough good things about him. Like Heath Ledger in "Brokeback Mountain," he said volumes just through his eyes. He was mesmerizing. I knew he was good, but this was a major achievement for him. The rest of the cast handled their jobs very well. And the story had a nice punch at the end, though I think Spielberg continues to have problems with his endings. This goes back to "Minority Report."

Now, the music. Absolutely brilliant. It's a mix of "Saving Private Ryan," "JFK" and "Born on the Fourth of July." Most of the score, which couldn't possibly be more than 30 minutes, consists of what I called the "terrorist" theme, because it popped up every time we saw a Palestinian or they were about to be killed. It felt like a distant cousin to the theme from "Jaws" and also the theme from "Signs." Like a pulse. I found myself tapping my fingers, a great sign.

The end credits music is beautiful. Very much like "Arlington" from "JFK." A lot of people in the audience actually stuck around to listen until the final note was played.

If you're not a fan of movie violence, stay away. This is about as graphic as it gets.

I really want to see it again, if only to re-judge the use of Avner's theme in the film, and to watch the fantastic sequence in London.

This is not a "10" because Spielberg set the bar so high with "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan" as far as his serious films go. But it's pretty darn close. Too bad there have been so many problems with the DVDs and getting on the awards lists this year. If it had been released in November, say, none of this would have happened. It wouldn't be a "maybe" on the Oscar list.

I give the film an '8' a good drama but I was totally taken out of it by the ending. The film didn't end it just ran out of time.

There wasn't very much more they could've gone with if you've read the book. I thought it ended nicely, not in line with most pictures

"Road to Perdition" a 10? Perfect film? Yikes.

Anyway, I would consider few films to be absolutely perfect (10), and Munich is no exception. The star rating is better (out of four), because a movie can be a four star flick and not considered "hands down perfect" in every regard. Munich gets four stars, and about an 8.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Mixed, yes, but far more good than bad.

Morlock- who hopes it will be good when he sees it at the end of the week

How are the reviews in Israel regarding this film?

The only review I've seen over here has been quite scathing. I'm sure they'll be quite a lot of anger about the film. I'll see if it's justified (I suspect it is to some extent, but I hope it is not).

"Citizen Kane."

"Schindler's List."

"Road to Perdition."

"The Lion King."

"E.T."

Hmmm.....Yes....yes....not quite, but close.....flat out no.....another yes.

Though I'm quite fond of it, I don't think the Lion King is really great as a motion picture.

Flawed score, in the way it is 'played'. Cannot be a 10 then

...And having nothing to do with the score, which I think is excellent and perfect for the film.

Wouldnt you prefer to have the same music with a full orchestra?

Is it me or was the Dutch town of Hoorn mentioned 3 or 4 times in MUNICH? Saw the movie Friday night. Spielberg's most violent movie to date and certainly worth seeing. A hearty 66 chins up for this one.

I've not seen it yet, and i''m not paying any attention to critics. Relatives, have let critics viewings already influence them and they are not going to see it as a result. Far too many people rely on outside reviews nowadays to determine if they go and see a movie or not. Best just to go and see movies for ourselves. Personally, I don't give a flying fuck how "Vanity fair" or "The Times" rates movies. At work, we have a radio playing constantly (whether we like it or not) and the trailer for Brokeback mountain we keep on hearing with deep brooding voice is 40% just an endless rambling of what magazines and papers think of it - "An instant classic" (The Times) "Fantastic" (vanity fair), etc etc

Yup, Avner and his group make a quick stop in the little Dutch town of Hoorn, The Netherlands for one of the film's most disturbingly violent scenes.

But don't expect Stefancos running around in the background as an extra. Because this sequence was actually shot in Hungary.

A nasty little scene even by Spielberg's standards. Yes I was hoping to see Steef being fished out of the canals. :)

Yes. Yes I would. But it is still excellent and perfect for the film.

Saw Munich tonight. I can't really form a good opinion of it as a complete film at this point. The viewing was far too muddled by expectations and criticisms and press and all that crap. I need to distance it from everything, than see it again (preferably without an audience, which over here will always have very charged feelings about the subject). Initial feeling- good movie. Great acting. Good looking, with some fantastic cinematography. Effectively scored. A lot of the controversy seems unfounded, though there is plenty for people who take sides in this particular matter to dislike. Oh, and the film does feel too long. And the cross cutting of the sex scene and the flashback is crass and heavy handed.

My thoughts exactly, film is too subjective (scores as well) for me to put any stock in what people's reccomendations or reviews say about any given film (or score).

Saw it tonight. I found it to be excelent, very un-typical, superiorly shot, edited and acted and it gives us way more questions than answers. As far as Spielberg goes, I have to say this, IMHO, the best directed movie I've seen all year. A movie that really must be seen again. It is too dense.

IT's shame none of the actores were nominated for the oscar. At least Bana, Rush and Londsdale could've been considerated.

Wow. What a film. Dark, morally ambiguous, utterly depressing. I found some of the scenes almost unbearable to watch - a feeling I have only ever got from Schindler's List before. I found the sex/tarmac scene to be incredibly powerful, signifying the final transformation of a good man into a psychotic, neurotic, paranoid wreck. In many ways the story is Schindler's List turned on its head; in SL a "bad" (or at least amoral) man turns good, and saves the day. In Munich, a good man turns into someone whose very being, his drive, his sexal fantasies even, are wrapped up in killing and violence.

For me what made it so gloomy was that Spielberg clearly presents the Munich massacre as the primary antagonist (it is a character in the film, there is no doubt), and as such seems to justify the Israeli response. But then we see just what that response does - to the men, to trying to stop terrorism, to any sense of morality anyone had. And it seems in the end that there is no way out. Either more Munichs happen or more violence happens.

An astonishing picture, which to me surpassed SPR and only just falls short of SL.
