Elmer's True Grit To Be Released (re-recording)

Tadlow is going to release a re-recording of Elmer Bernstein's complete score for True Grit which is considered as one of his best western scores.

Now that is a dream come true. Paramount even allowed them to access the master tapes to restore the original recordings for preservation. Really good to know that the original sessions of this classic are in good hands.

The release of the re-recording is limited to 3000 copies and will be released in early may.

That'd be right! Another limited edition CD. :sigh:

The master tapes are available, they are being preserved, and yet they won't remaster them & release them on CD, but release a re-recording?

I fail to see the logic-- except for mere bureaucratic economic reasons--; it doesn't make sense.

:sigh:

So, according to the same logic, rather than remaster the movie, which they will preserve, will they release a remake on DVD?

It seems like paramount is too lazy or financially inflexible to handle any licencing issues that may be involved with a release of the original sessions.

But it is good news that they finally seem to care about preservation of their goodies. God knows what may already be lost from their vault so maybe they are slowly waking up.

Tadlow was not given access to the master tapes, but rather the original written scores which were "transcribed and programmed into the Sibelius software notation programme." Here's the full quote:

"Thanks to the help of Eve Bernstein, Pat Russ, John Waxman and Paramount Pictures, Tadlow Music was given access to the original scores orchestrated by Leo Shuken and Jack Hayes. These original scores were then transcribed and programmed into the Sibelius software notation programme, so that not only could new and pristine parts be prepared for the recording but Elmer's original score would be preserved and archived."

And the whole announcement at Music From The Movies:

They could have said a little more precisely that they are refering to sheets of the score instead of original scores. That can cause a lot of confusion.

Then the situation might be even worse with the original masters probably being lost forever. That makes me wonder what else we might not know about paramounts score archive... if such an archive exists anymore.

Here is what someone posted at the FSM board about that:

Just to set the record straight - especially as James Fitzpatrick has been indelibly associated with Silva Screen down through the years - whilst Silva Screen and its affiliates will probably be handling the distribution for True Grit, Tadlow Music is James Fitzpatrick's own company and label, mostly concerned with orchestral hire and the arrangement of sessions, producing recordings for others etc. I believe his turnover was more than million pounds in the last tax year.

Seems like he is baking his own breads now. Maybe the rumours about the indy re-recordings were not refering to silva but tadlow? That would explain why silva never made a statement about that.
