Saving Private Ryan, and guys SL is an overrated score, its not worthy of being included among JW's best works, and neither is SPR, another of those bland scores that might serve its purpose, which in the film is to be unnoticed, and as a seperate listening experience it still goes unnoticed. :sleepy:

I don't understand it either... Still; it DID happen and I would have never thought it possible. I find these polls therefore very exciting and unpredictable.

And now Amistad seems to be next on the drop-out list... This amazes me...

Schindler's List may be the best score of Williams' career and it's "departure" is regrettable...

Schindler's List may be the best score of Williams' career

Towering Inferno, Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters, Superman, ESB, Raiders, ET, TOD, EOS, HA, JP, LW, HPSS, HPPOA, are all better than SL.

Perhaps you're right about Star Wars, Superman, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders or E.T. (together with Schindler's List the unquestionable masterpieces of Williams' career closely followed by Jaws, Hook, Jurassic Park and Born On The 4th Of July), but seriously: The Towering Inferno and The Lost World???? Better than Schindler's List? I don't think so...

JFK. Though with first Rosewood out and now Schindler's List, it's getting ridiculous. I can't figure how scores like Geisha and Munich survived for so long in the last poll - especially Geisha falls pretty much into Schindler's category, only SL is a far better score.

I like action-adventure scores as much as the next guy, buit it saddens no drama score will ever win a poll like this. The 90's were specially wonderful in that department for John Williams.

I can't believe you're describing SPR as boring. I listen to it a lot and find it very emotional.

its a terrible score, one of the worst JW Oscar nominated scores ever, so undeserving.

Do you have all the toys that came along?

Anyway, some of us like the dramatic scores more than the fantasy ones.....

what an almost intelligent response, almost.

I would postulate that the Towering Inferno, Close Encounters, ET, and EOS, not to mention John's rejected Color Purple score are all dramatic scores. While Fantasy would describe the crying sequence in SL.

John Williams' rejected Color Purple score? What are you talking about?

.  While Fantasy would describe the crying sequence in SL.

Fantasy or not, it is a incredibly well scored sequence.

I'm not too big a fan of a good deal of John William's dramatic scores.

Say what you will about Horner, but I find his dramatic scores superior to that of John Williams. The Missing, Titanic, Legend of the Fall, Glory, Spitefire Grill....all come to mind.

Go ahead shoot me.

I would describe it as embarrassingly bad. Its kind of like a perfect Ice Skating sequence in the Olympics, except the skater falls at the very end.

It's very taboo to criticize Schindler's List: if you don't like it, then you're a bombastic Star Wars geek. Or a Nazi. The nature of the material (the film) prevents a fully honest discussion of the music. That said, I certainly didn't vote for SL, and was dismayed to see it go.

You will get a lot more bashing if you say you don't like Jurassic Park than if you say you don't like Schindler's List.

But I just cannot see what's there not to like in the SL score. It's sublime.

thats not true, there seems to be alot of JP bashing, and back in the old days it was rather revered, but not theses days, while SL is almost Holy in its reverence.

Wether alex and Neil agree with it or not, The Jurassic Park score was the Star Wars of the 90's was.

Many Williams fans of my generation became fans because of this score.

That is very true and such was the case with me. But I still think Schindler's List is a vastly superior work.

Umm, no it's not :sigh:

I never fail to be moved by Hymn to the Fallen & Omaha Beach especially.

But considering you once described War of the Worlds (and of course I love that as well) as 'unlistenable', forgive me if I don't take notice of your comments on his more minimalist scores in the future - I think you just can't appreciate his less thematic works.

That also brings to mind The Lost World, is that a crap score as well?

The entire film was constructed for realism. I personally don't find any fault with Williams choice for the music taking a back seat. After all he still wrote one of his best concert pieces for the film.

Honestly, not every score can be marches wall-to-wall. :sigh:
