Boogeyman - Why some films from 2005 don't work either...

In my contuining horror-marathon I came across a relativly new film called Boogeyman produced by Sam Raimi.

Although I found the photography and acting quite good, this is just a very bad film. Awful actually.

In my previous posts concerning Poltergeist and The Thing I linked the effectiveness of those movies to their special (and not so special) effects. I will do the same with Boogeyman.

The movie is pretty much devoid of special effects until the finale. The finale could have redeemed the film to a certain degree, but instead it proved to be the nail in the coffin.

The Boogeyman is a horrible CGI effect. Really horrible. It COULD have been scary, but this movie proved that it is very difficult to make CGI scary. It becomes a scene straight out of Van Helsing or The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

For those who have not seen this film yet: Hooray to you!! Don't waste your time with this one fellows; it's outright BAD.

I'll be honest and say that most horror films aren't really scary especially a great majority of them made since the 70's.

There have been some good ideas but poor film making and tons of sequels have ruined it. I also think audiences are used to all the gore and guts because you can see most of that on regular TV now.

There is a special thread for when you want to tell people what movie you just have seen. It's called "What is the Last Film You Watched? - Part II"

The whole concept of horror, originally, is sort of renegade filmmaking. Film makers doing what they please, forgetting about whoever will want to see their work, but just going for it.

The reason modern horror films tend to suck, is that Hollywood has begun making pre-packaged horror films. It's a sad state of affairs. But rest assured, there are still brilliant young filmmakers out there making GOOD horror. And they will come more into light as Hollywood slowly dies, and independent filmmaking comes forward.
