Filmworks confusion

Recommended Posts

I'm confused, apparently there are 3 different Filmworks albums all named identically. Are they reissues (with updates)?

I have the 1997 one. So no Men of Yorktown March...among others.

It seems that the 1997 version is the most common of the three. I do not have any of those but my friend has the 1997 one. Shame that there is no Men of the Yorktown March on it.

Actually, this CD was one of the very first Williams (and film music) CD's I ever got, back when it was released, only preceded by JURASSIC PARK, I think.

It is a good compilation and the only available source for the original recordings of the Midway material. I particularly like the awesome and challenging fife solo in the Midway March which Williams then changed in the concert version to something less intricate.

I thought the Midway march was a rerec and the original recording of that has never been released?

All the rest (on my release at least) is taken from the OSTs.

Back when the film was released, a single featuring the two Midway marches was made available in Japan. Not sure if there was an US release of it at the time -- I've seen more than one release of the single at eBay, but only recall finding data supporting a Japanese release. I never got a copy for myself as they usually end up being a bit expensive, but I think a friend has it, and I'll check with him.

That might have been the reason for including it on the original FilmWorks release, since the album masters might have been available to Japanese branch of MCA.

Other than that, this albums might be seen of interest for having on CD stuff that is otherwise out of print -- or maybe as a fine introduction to Williams' earlier work for those unfamiliar to it.

The first version was a Japanese release only, and a rare one from the start.

Me too. Thank God I bought it (in Japan). When I did, I didn't realize that it will include tracks exclusive to the Japanese edition.
