Doug is answering questions on his blog again. Obviously his hands are tied, but I thought this one response was interesting:

QUESTION: Is it possible anything from the theatrical edition music will be changed for the extended cut. For instance in FOTR, Frodo's run down to Gandalf at the beginning is muted in original while it has music in the EE. Or will any of the music already in the film for parts, be altered?

I'll say it upfront: I'm guessing you can't answer.

DOUG: Good guess. You'll see in a few weeks/months why I had to sign so many NDAs for the EE. :)

Maybe I'm looking into it a bit too much, but it sounds kind of promising.

Indeed it doesn't, but perhaps they might have changed the score for existing scenes and messed up the music for the added scenes? It would make sense.

If they were only to make one change, I'd hope it would be to restore the original composition to the Gandalf/Galadriel sequence. The rest don't bother me half as much.

There's also this on his twitter account:

@DestroyTheAbyss I've signed 2 NDAs related to The Hobbit TE, and 4 or 5 related to the EE. I think they want me to stay quiet for now. ;)

I'm surprised he'd have to sign so many NDAs for the EE specifically. But then I guess everyone involved probably does.

What if they replaced the Eagles music from the film though? I think the general consensus is that people prefer that to what's heard in 'A Good Omen'. Certainly, it seems to be the most demanded of the unreleased material.

However much I hope, and try and read something in these comments, I think BloodBoal is right. I just can't see any drastic changes, or even minor ones, for the EE. I think Doug just has to be coy about everything at this point due to the nature of the NDAs. I mean he can't even tell us about the bonus tracks, and it's fairly apparent 3 of them have nothing to do with the EE.

I disagree - I hope the DOS OST is filled with even MORE alternates - as many as possible! - since the eventual CRs will be the film versions. Might as well get as many alternates out now so we don't have to wait 5 years for a Rarities CD that might not even come.

I would love for them to fix every single edit in the score, but I don't think that's realistic if the Elrond scene is an indication. But something must be in the bushes when Doug says we will definitely see why so many NDA contracts.

Are CR's guarenteed?

Nope!

Well, it's not like any CRs will come out until 2015 or later anyway.

It's my most anticipated CD of 2013! (Sorry, J-Dub!)

Oh, I definitely think so. AUJ featured so many returning characters and locations, so much of the score was re-working the Shire, Hobbit, Saruman, Lothlorien, Rivendell, Mordor, and Ring themes. Film 2 should only briefly reference those, and contain MANY new themes - for Beorn, Thranduil (which I think we might have been introduced to in My Dear Frodo, incidentally), Tauriel, Bard, Smaug (No way his theme in AUJ is the only one he gets), Dain, Mirkwood, Laketown, Erebor (I know there already is an Erebor theme, but it's more of a longer/reminiscent theme, I think the mountain or at least their kingdom in it may get another theme), plus maybe others. Huge potential for a great score here!

I prefer the album versions to the film versions in every regard (I'm referring to when entire cues were re-done, not when cues were micro-edited)

It seems he's familiar with all the conspiracy theories so he probably keeps abreast of our ramblings. I imagine they provide good entertainment value.

He stops by here pretty often during the heights of messageboard paranoia, just to leave enigmatic clues that ask more questions than they answer (which naturally makes everyone freak out more). I think he enjoys it :P

None of my smilies in the http://MusicofLOTR.com chat yesterday were indicating that music has been changed the The Hobbit EE

I just like smilies. Sorry message board pundits! :)

I KNEW IT! I've stopped getting my hopes too high with everything related to this franchise a year ago.

BloodBoal - who just said in the other thread that he expects the DoS score to be better than AUJ in every aspect.

Yes, PJ taught me a very important lesson that day...taper your expectations!!

There's no chance it's an alternate for the no admittance scene, and I was surprised when I was checking out your revised Old Friends videos that you still had it synced there.

The deleted took party scene is as good a guess as any until the EE comes out.

What is represented by the ominous motif that goes C to Ab then up to B and down to G - followed by C Ab Bb G F#? It's like a reworking of the descending third motif.

Posted

The Descending Third has numerous variations in AUJ, representing, Azog, the Necromancer/Sauron and the shadow growing over Mirkwood, and the more traditional setting applied to the Witch King of Angmar (and, by extension the other 8 Nazgul).

What track on the OST can I hear it in?

That's basically what it is. Reworking a of the descending thirds and the Mordor skip beat is used to allude to the Necromancer/Sauron without stating the theme directly.

With the exception of the Nazgul Choir, Gondor Reborn and The Breaking, there is nothing that takes me out of the film.

Yeah those are the main offenders really.

So what have I missed in these past 2 weeks? I was without an internet connection the whole time on my holiday.
