  1. I have to say that this is one of the strangest rules i've ever heard of! I mean, how could the admin really enforce such an edict?

As for your question, a few soundtracks readily come to mind:

    - Pee Wee's Big Adventure

    - Many Disney scores, past and present (obviously)

    - Secret of N.I.M.H

    - Honey I Shrunk the Kids

    - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

    - The Goonies

  2. Jurassic Park... which ironically enough also sparked an interest in Dinosaurs which led to my love for science and entrance into the field of Genetics.

Same here - I couldn't have been the only kid who wanted to be a Paleontologist after seeing the movie and then reading the book. I remember obsessing over everything that had to do with dinosaurs and genetics that summer, devouring all books on the subjects at my local library (I got 3 badges for book loans that summer!)

  3. Sweet zombie jesus!

This is the last time I try and start a light-hearted thread. From now on it will be nothing but high-brow intellectual commentary and discussion from me.

    ;)

I'll listen to Zimmer every once in a while, mostly when I'm driving and I need to stay awake.

I hear that man - nothing like Zimmer to get the ole feet tapping and keep the eyelids open during those long cross-state journeys.

On a serious note, Johnny Dub is a golden god.

"He speaks for all of us".

And welcome to the boards by the way! ;)

Don't be too afraid of some of the posters here....they're just a bit curmudgeonry because they haven't had their afternoon nap yet (or ever).

  4. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Batman Returns - I remember buying these two soundtracks on cassette when I was 12 years old, followed by Jurassic Park on CD a year later.

Funnily enough, I used to listen only to cheesy pop music (and begrudgingly at the time the music that my dad liked ---> Pink Floyd, Zepplin, etc) - but once I bought these soundtracks, one could say my taste in music changed entirely. From these, I started liking other soundtracks and it also opened up my world to Classical Music, which I consider my "favorite" type of music today.

Indeed, glorious was the day that I discovered John Williams composed most of the scores that I had ever liked.

  5. My advice is to pan out where the note starts, ends, and then try playing with what fits. Somtimes it really isn't meant to be in time and you just have to put all the notes in and the number of notes above the thing... like some celtic music I've played is like that...

    That's exactly what I do.

I'm working on transcribing Finale and End Credits from Hook, and there are runs all over the place.

It seems that as long as I can get the first and last note right and in the correct place - I can fill in the rest of the run adequately (the runs are so fast sometimes that no one will notice whether the fifth of a 32 note run is correct or not).

I'd be interested to hear both your pieces sometime if you're so inclined? I am eager to get feedback on mine too...

  6. I have always enjoyed Zimmer. I don't care about any flak I get for saying that, but there is just something about his riffs that I really enjoy! So, therefore, I have over 100!

    No wonder this happened!

Flippin' eck man....that is a catastrophe indeed. Hope you didn't lose any rare prints or such Johnny...

We needed a thread for this?

    I'm sorry bondo,

It's just that I needed to tell someone....anyone.

Its almost like this is an AA meeting or something.

"Hello everyone......my name is Beowulf.....and I own more than 3 Hans Zimmer scores"

Tell you what though, it *has* made me feel a wee bit better. :o

Do you have any idea how much like a pathetic child the above comments sound?

    Sheesh....lighten up "Zarathustra"

  8. No shame in owning music you enjoy. Which four do you have?

    - The Last Samurai (a very, very good score IMO)

    - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

    - Gladiator

    - And most recently, Crimson Tide (one of my first favorite scores)

Plus no matter how hard you try to dislike the guy, he's just too likeable a fellow. Always jovial (in that German kind of way) and always having nice things to say about his fellow composers.

And come on.....he played Keyboard for the song "Video Killed the Radio Star" for pete's sake! That song defined the 80s.

  9. Ah, that's a Bat-cycle.

When read about a bicycle for Batman, I was thinking it might be one of these with pointed ears and wings or something...

You know, the old Bat vehicles all had a trademark Gothic look. I take it the new, standard-on-all-Bat-vehicles novelty is huge tires?

As much as I love the Burton-era batmobile (and I love it immensely), I just think the gothic style you mention is a bit gaudy and ostentatious for the tone that Nolan is trying to take.

One things for damned sure - Schumacher's involvement with the franchise and memories still lurking about the camp 60's show seemed to have shaped how these new films are turning out.....and that's a good thing.

  10. That high note in Nessun Dorma just didn't work out. He was good, but not THAT good. I'm happy for him, though. :P

I'm happy anytime classical music can edge out the sludge that passes for music on these types of shows.

  11. still too long? I dont' recall you saying that before so I'm not sure why you say "still"...

I've mentioned it on your JP and SW edits too. And it's a five-minute clip, not a feature film, so it doesn't need to be that long.

That doesn't mean I don't appreciate the effort.

So he should change it just because you say so?

It's his artistic effort and edit - he can do whatever he wants to. Lighten up.

And keep it up GoodMusician - there *are* those of us here who appreciate things such as these without the need to be critical of trivialities.

  12. The Fountain

Very nice and it had the perfect length. Jackman and Weisz were great together and the cinematography was brilliant as well as the score. I only had a problem with one scene in particular because it lacked the elegance of the rest of the film but on the whole I was very satisfied.

Agreed. I watched this film on the plane back home over easter holidays - the sound quality was really bad [no thanks to those awkward headphones] but the visuals were what stuck with me. I'm of the opinion that art-films like this should be promoted and encouraged in America more than they currently are.

I had a mini Coen brother's marathon last evening and watched Fargo and Raising Arizona, two of my favorite films. Raising Arizona to me is one of the funniest movies out there and Nicolas Cage does a fantastic job in the lead with a great ensemble cast to round it out (typical of Coen Brothers movies). This movie and Adaptation always renew my faith in Cage's acting abilities, in spite of his more questionable mainstream movie roles.

  13. Joker revealed

After my own personal disappointment with Spiderman 3 and the other comic book film-adaptations as of late, it seems that the only franchise that I really look forward to anymore is the revamping of the Batman legend.

And now comes this picture of Heath Ledger as the Joker.

I like it...a lot. Gone is the whimsy of Burton and the camp of Schumacher, and that is definitely a good thing (although I still love both Burton films and scores).

I've always thought the world of Gotham City was a dark and disturbed one and that the Joker should look and act as a demented madman - thankfully, it seems as if Nolan thinks so too.

  14. gkgyver already posted a link to the article in the Potterdom thread. ;)

To tell you the truth, I'd rather have any new Harry Potter music-related news posted in its own thread. I can't stand to sift through the Potterdom thread since i'm not really interested in the literary/film aspects of the series, and discussions in that thread often get derailed.

    Just my opinion though.
