JW fans - tempered in their appreciation of JW, almost just as JW himself is. Cautious of overappreciating things. "Favorite" does not mean "best". Respect for other masters.
Good answer!

I've said it before, there may not be a lot of hardcore female score fans but you would be suprised at the amount of women who have 4 or 5 film scores in their CD collections.
Yeah - and I bet you five bucks that the score to 'Titanic' is one of them.
-
It's because women have more important things to do...
Like cooking.
I keed, I keed!
But seriously, it does seem to be guys who usually geek out and become fanatics of certain things - film scores included (although that doesn't explain why girls freak out for boy bands).
Basically, I got nothing.

What? No one's mentioned John Ottman?
That's because he sucks.
All the best composers are German.
Russian, actually
Agreed - don't get me wrong, the Germans were good, but the Russians were better - especially in the last two centuries.
-
It isn't weird. It's because John is such a common name. I am sure that there is no significant difference between the prevalence of the name 'John' among famous composers and among the rest of the population.
Quiet you!
This is no time for factual discussions of why this actually occurs.
-
I've thought about that before, too. Weird, innit?
I didn't know anyone else was familiar with colloquial English slang!? The amount of times people say 'innit' around these parts is mind-boggling.
I wonder if there's a similarly frequent name for female composers.Well doing a quick scan of names at this list, it would appear that 'Mary' and the corresponding names in other languages (i.e. 'Maria', 'Marie', etc) is the female equivalent.

...name him John:
- John Williams
- John Adams
- John Corigliano
- John Debney
- John Powell
- John Barry
- John Cage (debatable?)
- Johann Sebastian Bach (German equivalent of 'John')
- and so on
Statistically speaking, he would have a better chance than others at being a composer of note based upon prior evidence.
Though I don't know what you'd do if you have a girl, but I suppose you could name her John too - you never know, it might help the odds.

We need this guy:
or this guy:
to discern the meaning of this connundrum. Veeeery interesting though.

"When You're Alone" from 'Hook'.
Although I wouldn't admit that to anyone I know - or to anyone other than the anonymous masses of the internet.

Do the hustle!
Actually, this is the hustle:
Smooth moves...

RIP Mr. Montalban.

Sums up why I love JW's scores - he's pretty much king at the big musical flourishes.
-
lol
I knew this score would be savaged here.

Temple, Raiders, Crusade.
I know Raiders is the grand-pappy of them all and laid the foundation, but Temple is JW at his most exuberant and finest, that's why it's number 1 for me.

Oh ok...as a "non-white" person, I guess I had better revise my "like" of classical music after reading that blog, as it seems only people encumbered with "white guilt" can appreciate classical music and the other fine things in life.

I just gave "Anakin's Betrayal" a listen. It sounds so generic. The choir makes it seem like every "Lord of the Rings" knock off, trailer music written today. This guy wrote Superman?

The Fly (Shore)
The Mummy (Goldsmith)
Do these count, I wonder?

Temple of Doom End Credits. The themes work so incredibly well together, and the transitions are logical. My favorite end credit sequence ever.
Ditto.
I love how Short Round's Theme is seamlessly inserted into the Raider's March.

Yeah, but I was hoping for something a bit more black with a gold grill.
Ah...I see your point. Though one would have to wonder about the functionality of the grill, besides giving dramatic flair whenever Kirk would open one that is.

Hmm...not sure about that communicator.
I was at first too - especially the blatant addition of the Starfleet Insignia. But then it just occurred to me that if we look at TNG and the other later series, the communicator always consists simply of an insignia-shaped device attached to the uniform. From this point of view, I can see how the retro-design kinda actually works.

Man, i've never seen such a case of misunderstanding.
For the record Wojo, I was not implying you're racist - I thought you were trying to say that not liking a Will Smith movie was somehow racist (which as I explained has happened to me a couple of times). And I always bold people's usernames when i'm addressing them on forums, it's my own internet etiquette I guess.
Man, I really need to start differentiating jwfan.com from the hordes of other sites/messageboards I visit. Especially the places that are rampant with trolls, anarchists, and general ne'er-do-wells. Every comment at those places is taken out of context and bounced around an echo-chamber until you basically go insane.
I must remember that this place is generally free of that, a zen garden on the internet [at least sometimes!].

But you were the one to bring it up here...
True, but it's been bugging me for awhile and I guess I needed to vent.
Back on topic, I gotta say I quite like Dune. Visually it really is quite a fun movie and when I watched it for the first time as a kid I didn't care about pesky things like "plots" or "continuity". I especially remember being awed with the Sandworms.

So how did we go from listing several lousy sci-fi movies that happen to star Will Smith to accusations of the president-elect ushering in new definitions of racism? Yeah, seriously?
Perhaps because it's true?
Twice, on separate occasions, in the month of December I remarked to some hipster-trendy [douchebag] friends of mine that I thought I am Legend and Hancock both sucked royally, despite those movies doing well at the box-office.
I was accused of simply "not liking" Will Smith and being a racist because I don't like most of his movies. These same two moronic friends of mine also had the opinion that if you didn't vote for Obama or didn't drink the kool-aid surrounding the man, you were an obvious racist (which seemed to be echoed by the BBC over here in the UK). Of course it didn't matter that I thought all the candidates who were running were inadequate and that I'm generally apolitical, it only mattered to my friends that I wasn't 100% totally in the tank for Obama and hence, an obvious racist. Whatever happened to people distrusting ALL politicians?
Now I hope you can agree with me that both types of reasoning are ludicrous, and as for me, they are connected hence the aside.

Stereotypes are often rooted in truths, so what's wrong with discussing them? For example, people who listen to 'goth' music sometimes wear black. And people who listen to Hip Hop are oftentimes brain-dead idiots.
Both stereotypes are mostly true, so does that make stereotyping wrong?
