The film version of "A Promise Kept" uses both versions of the cue overlapping, (the version on disc 3 was originally called "A Promise Kept - 2nd part REVISED") in addition to a small section of "The Beacon: Those Who Have Gone Before" by Michael Stearns.

I don't think you understand my question. I'm speaking of the first part. In the movie, there are some ghostly voices that play over the opening that aren't present in the original album.

It plays live, but most of the artificial edits created to conform the score to the finished film have been recreated musically for the performance.  It's still very choppy and not a good musical experience.

Yeah, I see what you mean. In my opinion, it's slightly less painful to listen to the concert, because while the edits are recreated, they sound a LOT better than they do in the film.

That's actually incorrect, it is still the same edited score performed live. Orchestrator JAC Redford had to recreate all of the film edits using both the film mix of the score and the original sheet music, basically stitching the entire score together like that for the musicians to play.

There was also "Aliens Live" which also featured the edited score.

For Titanic there are minor differences between the film and the live performance, letting certain pieces play longer (Southampton has its entire middle section dialed out in the film but plays through in the live performance) and the source music is also performed live with the score.

Ah, it appears I was unclear. I understand that it is still the edited score, but it's played live so the edits are not present. That's what I meant. I also knew there were some differences, but thank you for the example. That I did not know.

Does the first minute of Titanic Suite appear in the actual score anywhere?  I remember hearing a similar passage during one of the flyover shots of the sinking. Might be tracked from the dive sequence?

My set arrived in London yesterday (holy shit) - I *could* get it tomorrow!

The first little four note motif is indeed in the film a few times. You here it first in the beginning of 2 1/2 miles down when the sunken ship first comes into view. It's tracked throughout the sinking of the ship from that very cue like you said. It is also heard in a few other scenes, such as the end of the scene at the promenade and in Rose's Suicide Attempt, though I'm unsure if they're tracked in like in the sinking as I do not have the score yet. You were pretty much spot on.

In an attempt to spur discussion regarding the differences between the new album and the score as heard in the film, I watched the movie and made a spreadsheet (Jay, using yours as inspiration):

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1I8v85oiT3yg8IL_hkMB1fm57kLX1aftI53jEO2pjfQc/edit?usp=sharing

I included timecode from the US Blu-ray to aide others in finding where cues begin and end in the film, although there's some leeway in those times and the length of cues (it can be difficult to hear within the mix). Cue titles follow the album where applicable and I created new titles where needed. I noted tracked cues where they were immediately obvious as I was working. The notes are by no means comprehensive, but I think they're a decent starting place.

I feel as though it is rather important to note that several of the film versions of the cues contain parts of or are comprised entirely of alternate versions, such as Leaving Port, Southampton, and A Promise Kept.

One thing I didn't get into (it's an article all by itself really) is the film mix.

For "A Promise Kept", it's a combination of three pieces of music:

    'A Promise Kept' (album version)

'The Beacon (Those Who Have Gone Before)' by Michael Stearns' album "Encounter" - used by the editors, not a quote / borrow by Horner.

'A Promise Kept - new ending' (disc 3 version)

Use of 'The Beacon' is limited to about maybe...10 seconds? It's used to bridge the two film score cues together. You hear it as Rose is shaking Jack's hand trying to wake him up but he's already gone. A faint piece of ambiance.

I know exactly what part you're talking about. Does the alternate still have the opening or no?

    This release is awesome.

I first listened to discs 1 & 2 back to back.  It made me appreciate the score more than I ever had before.  I always liked the score, but never LOVED it.  But damn, listening to this I realized everything it really has to offer.

Then I listened to disc 3, and the alternates and stuff are a lot of fun.  I heard The Rocketeer in one track, Wrath of Khan in another, etc.  Classic Horner

Disc 4 seems like it could be nice relaxing background music for certain activities, I haven't listened to it all yet.

How's it compare to the Jurassic Park release last year?
