"Of all the film composers I know, Jerry’s music had the greatest range. He had an uncommon ability to understand a technique and style and then apply it in his own work in a way that seemed invisible to the film and story. John Williams referred to him as a “musical chameleon”. In addition, Jerry had a highly developed melodic gift, which he often sublimated -- as he did his entire technique -- to the needs of the film.
