  1. But I remember being bored a bit in Jaws..

    burn-the-witch-monty-python.jpg

    Haha!!

Ok, I got it! I am the only one!

I think the scenes i got a bit bored were all the preparatory scenes when they went out to sea to find the shark. Don't know..

I have to watch the film again..

And i was more in the edge of my seat in jaws 2 with the kids..

I didn't care what will happen to Richard Dreyfuss and the captain in the first movie, but i surely cared for those kids in the second!

But why? Do you think the kids from Jaws 2 were better developed characters than the ones from Jaws? Perhaps their acting was better? IMO, the only truly good thing that came out of Jaws 2 is the CD so I'm trying to understand this. I mean, I don't even remember the kids from Jaws 2. Blimey, I don't even remember the film. Maybe you think Spielberg's direction is horrible because he doesn't make you care? It might be next to impossible but let's try to get to the bottom of this.

    :D

When I'll watch the 2 films again, I'll come back with my opinion..

Now it's been 6-7 years since I last watched them, and I have watched them 2-3 times tops each one totally..

So, I don't know them like the palm of my hand like eg E.T., or Raiders..

the thing I can think of right now concerning this, is that childern are more helpless in my mind, in comparison with grown-ups who know what they're doing..

  3. I'm just watching Glee.

Started it from an episode of Season 2 and on..

Wow, it has fantastic songs and arrangements!

    Especially the Broadway/symphonic ones!!

I'm surprised that they didn't release a movie of it!

because it's a currently running tv show????

oh, right, I had never thought of that..

I just discovered the show, and it my mind it passed like an old show..

But I think I'd love to see a 2,5 hour movie version of it (like Sex and the City) which will kind of revive the old Broadway musical type of films I love.

I hope they'll think of it!

(the only character and storyline I don't like at all is Sue's.)

By the way, I didn't understand Quint's post.. :sarcasm:

(will be watching now last episode of season 2)

  4. Unless you are a Williams completist (meaning you don't only have to own everything he's done, but also SEE everything), I recommend staying clear of DADDY-O, BECAUSE THEY'RE YOUNG, I PASSED FOR WHITE, BACHELOR FLAT, DIAMOND HEAD, GIDGET GOES TO ROME, JOHN GOLDFARB, FITZWILLY, DADDY'S GONE A-HUNTING, THE SCREAMING WOMAN, EARTHQUAKE, 1941, HEARTBEEPS and SPACECAMP. Most of the other films have some form of value, IMO, ranging from pure comedy cheese to high art.

The only film I haven't seen is STORIA DI UNA DONNA, but from I've heard, that's nothing to write home about either.

I loooooove SPACECAMP, and I liked Diamond Head too.

I agree about 1941, it's one of the few Spielberg films (or perhaps the only one), that I can't stand..

  5. Ok, i got this idea from a similar thread at FSM about Goldsmith's worst film (not film score).

According to imdb ratings (see here at his composer credits list):

    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002354/filmorate

Daddy-O is the worst film Williams has scored (with a rating of 2.30, followed by Heartbeeps with a rating of 4.25)

Schindler's List is the best (with a rating of 8.90, followed by Star Wars and Empire Strikes back with a rating of 8.80)

Just thought that it would be interesting to point out. :)

  6. I don't remember this one as a snoozer but as a beautiful tragedy. However, the image quality of this Blu-ray release it terrible, IMO. Too much brightness, noise or grain and the colors look pale. Admittedly, the colors of my DVD are way too saturated, at least the images look like oil paintings of the old masters. I'm disappointed.

BTW, filmmusic, there are no English subtitles.

So, I guess, it was worse than these 2?

  7. Are you sure? It means that from now on you'll need to skip every future fantasy or science fiction movie.

yes, almost sure.. ;) (I am talking mostly about superhero movies, but others in general too)

well, the only fantasy films I've seen of the last years is the Dark Knight rises, the Dark Knight and Prometheus..

And those just to see what was all the fuss about (the first 2), and the 3rd because i loved the Alien series.

haven't seen (and probably won't) the Hobbit, Thor, Captain America, all the latest X-men movies, the Iron Man movies (saw the 1st one), the apes movies, dredd, john carter, total recall etc. etc..

to tell you the truth, i don' t see many recent films generally.

I watch one film every day, and those are: 99.9% from 1930-2000 (mostly 1930-1990) , and 0.1% from 2000-today (mostly the oscar nominated ones)

    main reasons for this:

    1) the music

    2) prefer traditional effects over CGI

    3) movies to me are an escape from reality, and because recent movies (even sci-fi and fantasy) have a realistic ouvre (eg compare the Nolan Batman with Tim Burton's), i prefer to see old movies, because i need psychologically an escape from now and reality.

    (Sorry for the off-topic. :) )

  8. My friend says that themes aren't important

Themes and motives are the most important aspects of film scores, in my opinion.

So, the Alien score by Goldsmith is no good at all?

There are plenty of themes and short motifs in Goldsmith's ALIEN. Same goes for PLANET OF THE APES.

Yeah, I know, but I have a hunch that the original poster and Bloodboal, were referring to traditionally tonal themes only.

Or else, yes, I agree with indy4, that there is no music at all that doesn't have any unifying element, a motif or something so this discussion has no point in that respect.

  9. My friend says that themes aren't important

Themes and motives are the most important aspects of film scores, in my opinion.

So, the Alien score by Goldsmith is no good at all?

my opinion: "themes are not important".

they are important to the general public so as to to digest film music more easily and have something to grab on...

Of course, it depends again what one considers a theme.

Someone might say that Stravinsky's Rite of Spring doesn't have themes, and another can say that it's loaded with themes.

It depends on if you understand a theme as a tonal only theme or not.

in that respect, yes, tonal themes aren't important so as to consider a film score a good one.
