  1. I play about 2-4 longer games per year (without casual and party stuff). Every few years I replay on or the other old favorite (usually a Zelda). I currently have 5 or 6 games I started on my "to finish" backlog, ranging from "bought a month ago" to "have it for 6 or 7 years". I'm currently getting into Metroid Prime 2 again, bought that one two years ago, after I (almost) finished the first one, but never really started investing significant time into it, life got in the way...

  2. A Link To The Past manual, in that regard, was a fucking work of art.

    Also, Nintendo's official guide book for ALttP is full of great illustrations and hand-drawn maps (no patchwork of screenshots or schematics here, no sir!), and that narrative way of telling the story and what to do to proceed ("After searching the whole place, Link finally finds the flute in the upper part of the clearing" or something like that, instead of "Go to the clearing and dig at the third space from the left" or so). I often grabbed that guide book and just read it from start to finish, independently from actually playing the game. It really provided a more or less coherent narrative, instead of just captions to screenshots and bulleted lists.

    I still treasure that one. The TP guide book I bought a few years ago was a big disappointment in comparison, apart from the few pages of lush poster artwork.

  3. So, ZREO's "Twilight Symphony" is finally in the process of being rolled out. I just received my download email and am in the middle of my first listen (while eagerly awaiting the physical album). So far it sounds great, many great suite-like arrangements of great music (although with a bit of meandering filler here and there) :) And I believe it has several stirring horn solos by our very own Marc Papeghin!

  4. Another flashback? Will 90% of the film consist of flashbacks?

    Of course. It will be a tremendously orchestrated sequence of significant events necessary to set everything in motion, and at the end, Gandalf will walk up to Bag End, Bilbo will look up, and say "Good morning". Gandalf's game-changing retort will be withheld until the beginning of film two, where, finally, the unbearable suspense of how exactly he will react to being addressed in such an ambivalent, if seemingly innocuous way will be revealed, ending the most ingenious cliffhanger in the whole history of cinema.

  5. After watching the ending again and pausing the image to take a closer look at the White Rider (:P), I'm starting to warm to this depiction of them (how paradoxical!). The "skin" looks like a kind of rugged miniature glacier landscape, even glistening in the light a bit. Perhaps the initial overly negative impressions stems from the fact that I imagined it very differently...

  6. Looking at your discussion, and glancing at the avatar pictures, I can't help but think of this quote: "No! For I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to; the long explanations needed by the young are wearying." ;)

    The episode was indeed a worthy finale for an overall great season. I concur with the impression that the White Walkers appeared too "physical" -- when reading, I pictured them having a more crystalline, icy appearance, like something that moves despite looking like it should be immobile, adding to the creepiness. These Others looked more like they came back to life after having been dehydrated and conserved under the ice for ages...

  7. I suppose they could have named each season after its specific book title.

    Unfortunately this wouldn't work for long, what with the third book being split over two seasons, and after that it gets really messy book/chronology-wise.

The beginning of "Imperial Attack" (SE track 3) from Star Wars (and similar passages in the score) could be classified as bitonal, as the pedal (unchanging pitch in the bass) is at odds with the harmonies of the Rebel Fanfare on top. Though I guess it's not a strict case, because the R.F. chords do not belong to one single key (it's more of a kind of "mixture" in the Debussy sense of the word).

I have listened to several pieces from the suite... the arrangement are really good, and all in all the orchestra was up to the task (technically speaking)... but I noticed many flubbed notes, rhythmic inconsistencies etc.... let alone some awkward phrasing from the choir (I mean, breathing between the upbeat and the beginning of the next bar? really??)... I'll attribute that to a lack of appropriate rehearsal time. Sadly, in my experience that isn't really uncommon.

    /edit: Two, if you count Snowy. From the books I've read so far he also really has a thing for whisky.

    (His and Haddock's struggle for the floating anti-grav whisky bubble was hilarious... was this adapted from the moon story? I remember that also having floating whisky)

    "a power greater that could change the course of history",

    That is one of the trailer's tagline.

    I for one, thougth that they had invented some supernatural relic for the film... in the end it seems that it was just enough money to change the fate of the world if it had arrived to england or france or something like that.

    That left me scratching my head, too. In retrospect it seemed like the typical trailer line to make things sound super dramatic and mysterious. Do they think they need to exaggerate the stakes to draw more people in? What's wrong with "A sunken treasure that has been lost for centuries"?
