About Me

You need to be a bit extra careful when choosing a home or flat on rent. It helps if you are clear about your budget, type of property, location, etc. as you should not regret your decision later. Here are a few tips that would help you rent a flat in Delhi.

When you set out to find a rental accommodation in Delhi, you need to set a few things right. You must be very clear about your budget and the size of rental property that fits in your requirements. Keep to the tested formula of not shelling out more than 25-30% of your income on rent. If you spend more on rent, you are sure to land in trouble.

All residential areas in Delhi or any city for that matter have a certain rental standard, so it is better to do an online survey to find out whether the rentals in a particular area are within your budget. If the rentals exceed what you can pay, there is little point in looking for a property there. They may ask for advance rental and a safety deposit, and it must be within what you can pay.

If you are a student or a single professional, you can share the apartment with others and split the rent. Four or five of you can together rent a flat of two or three rooms and enjoy comfortable stay together. The flat may well be beyond your reach separately, but you may rent it together and the expenses per head may be affordable.

Before you begin looking for a rental property, you must make up your mind about the kind of property you are willing to rent. Do you want to stay in a private home or prefer a society flat? Are you willing to stay at distance from transport hubs or you want to reside at stone’s throw from the metro station? Do you want a well-furnished flat or anything having basic facilities will fit?

If you are a single working professional, a studio apartment may suit your requirements. However, if you want to stay with family you may need a large apartment. A no-frills flat will cost less than a well-furnished flat located in a posh area. Some people are unwilling to compromise on the size of the rooms, terrace, kitchen, bathrooms, etc. while some will adjust with a smaller kitchen or balcony. It is all about individual choice and there can’t be a binding regulation for that.

Location is another determinant of the rent. A well located property will always be more expensive than the other that is a bit off the transport hubs or markets. If you have a own vehicle and won’t mind travelling a bit more every day for work or college, you may choose a property that is off-located and save a few bucks. However, you may need to shell out an amount for transport. It will be helpful if you find out what is better – the extra home rent or the transport expenses.

Make sure that your home is not located near a dumping yard, big drain or a manufacturing unit as a constant foul smell may make your living there hell. Talk in advance about payments of electricity, water bills, etc. When deciding on flats for rent in Delhi, factoring in these issues will make sure you don’t regret your decision later.
