  1. Well I acquired this and here's the facts, just to lay 'em down for anyone who's thinking there must be something different with this release.

The packaging is terrible. Each disc comes in a sleeve (so that that disc gets scratched up from repeated pulling in and out). The sleeves were made to look like the original LPs for each movie. This actually got me somewhat excited, because they list the tracklisting of the original LPs too. I mean, at least having that would be a little interesting since I own the previous releases. I stuck the CDs in and no dice, they're the same 2-Disc releases that have been around for years (this being the third release of them?).

The Corellian edition, as someone else mentioned, is basically just a bad list of various songs from the saga with a touch of reverb. Useless, especially in this set.

The CD-ROM contains pictures and some notes. No, you don't get the liner notes that would have made sense to include in this edition, seeing as how it was absent from the last. I think there's about 30 pictures with notes in all. And that's it.

Oh, the stickers. The stickers are the covers from the last re-release of these CDs. I'd like to think they threw them in there to remind all the idiots who've purchased these CDs before.

So it's exactly what it looks like and what everyone has been saying. Shit. Complete shit.

  2. See, now that would be the only benefit of Lucas making an Episodes 7,8 and 9 . . . it would completely destroy the novels that followed ROTJ. Canon this!

Anywho, I never minded the Trade Federation Theme played with the Clone Army. I felt it was foreshadowing. Although I'll admit the scene in ROTS where Anakin marches with the clones into the Jedi Temple . . . oh man, they had the Imperial March playing during the trailer and that would've fit so much better.

  3. Just saw Abre los ojos. Very nice film. I loved the final shot before the end credits.

A very good film, as far as I recall. The Hollywood remake is very disappointing in comparison.

I disagree. I thought Cameron Crowe improved upon the original in every way possible. Granted, a remake wasn't necessary in the least, but the final product was an improved one. Cinematography, acting, soundtrack (hell, especially the soundtrack). Crowe excells in dialogue and character interaction, especially with couples. His latest film (Elizabethtown) was disappointing, but he still created a nice relationship between Bloom's character and Dunst's character. The Abre los Ojos remake was better in my eyes . . . not by a large margin, but noticeably.

  4. Deadwood is great. It took me until the 3rd season to finally click with me. Something just kept drawing me back into it. I've never gotten into a TV show and if I'm interested, I just wait for it to come out on DVD. But you bet your ass that my ass finds its way to the couch every Sunday night for a new episode of Deadwood. Shame it got cancelled.

  5. I don't get it.  Why is everyone on Opeth's jock?  They're alright, but I just don't get why everyone is digging them so much.

Well I can only speak for myself, but I just got into them maybe . . . 4-5 months ago. I really don't dig the growling stuff but for some reason they finally clicked and Ghost Reveries for me is just a very infectous album. I only commented on it because I didn't think anyone else here listened to them (yeah yeah, I'm stereotyping).

Now if I find a Williams fan who's favorite band is Dream Theater . . . well. . . then I'll just implode.

  6. Wow, I had no idea so many passionate Trekkies (or Trekkers, whatever) existed on this board. It's hard for me to get into Star Trek sometimes . . . I suppose the last couple of movies left a bad taste in my mouth. As for the show, I've always enjoyed it for more campy reasons than anything. I think it's good they're bringing in new blood for Star Trek. Although I've yet to be amazed by anything Abrams has done. Yeah, I dug Alias and I really dig Lost, but MI:3 wasn't all that in my book . . . just merely passable (especially the score . . . yeah, bring the hate if you want).

I have to admit though, for the first time in a while there are a lot of films coming out that look interesting. Pan's Labyrinth and 300 come to mind.

  7. Wow, it seems I'm the only one who loved every one of Williams' scores last year. WotW took me the longest to get into, but all four of them are so varied . . . well, hell, people here have said it better than I ever could. I think all four of them are great. RotS being my favorite (I guess that means I'm a SW fanboy, huh?) with every track being a masterpiece in my eyes (or ears). Not a dull moment. WotW is the horrific score I've been waiting for. The Intersection Scene is such a tense track. Someone else noted that it really brings forth the feeling of helplessness. Memoirs is packed full of beautiful melodies and even Confluence has been rumored to make hearts burst out of chests! And Munich, well, A Prayer for Peace is a great track as is Remembering Munich (that's right, I like the wailing!).

Yeah, all our tastes are different of course, but with what Williams gave me last year, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy.

  8. Excellent debate brought up in this topic . . . as far as the sound mix with the prequels go, I'm happy about them. I think the music's fine for the most part. I could do without the poorly spotted music, but at least it's not from another movie series altogether (I'm looking at you Kingdom of Heaven). I think Lord Maurizio did a good job summing everything up and sure, there are scenes I wish the music was louder but as a whole, I think it's fine.

  9. I know there's a lot of debate about these movies. People complain that Lucas is cheating us, others say, "They're his movies, why do you care so much? They're only movies." Well I love music. We all love music here. We may disagree on favorite Williams scores or themes or even composers, but that doesn't change the fact that just about each and every one of us is passionate about music. That's why we're here in the first place.

Speaking for myself, I'm passionate about film also. Where as music more-or-less comes from one man and what inspires him, films are a true group effort. It never ceases to amaze me how great films are actually made when everything seems against them. How the hell can any kind of beauty come from all these people with their own vision and from a studio that's just looking to make money? For me though, it tends to do just that. Film can pluck me from my very seat and throw me into a galaxy far, far away or into Middle-Earth. I care about people and places that never exist. Granted, it seems to be a pain in the ass to go to a theater today with high ticket prices and annoying theater-goers who wont shut up . . . but I'll never forget sitting with an audience and cheering as the words "Star Wars" appear on a silver screen. To share something like that in a room filled with total strangers . . . incredible.

Which brings us back to the OT on DVD. The OT is what I grew up with. No, I wasn't alive in '77 but I love them no less than any other fan who was there for those times. When Lucas made his movies and put them out there for us to have . . . that's when they became ours. The fact of the matter is, he could give us re-mastered editions of the original Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, but chooses not to. It was George's unifying vision that helped to create the Star Wars Saga, but those movies weren't made by one man. That's why they're our movies. It's because of the fans that Lucas is where he is today. He owes it to us.

That's my reasoning on why we deserve the originals remastered.

  10. Steve scored The Island and Steamboy. I liked Steamboy. The Island . . . not so much.

As for the trailer, I thought it was good until I realized it was a Transformers trailer. I mean, Mars? It really doesn't say much about Transformers at all either, but it is a teaser. Still, the idea of the movie excites me and scares me. I guess this one is a wait-and-see.

  11. Given the budget, maybe they can't even afford to throw Jar Jar in there.

. . . does this thread include the upcomming animated series as well?  I was under the impression we'd be seeing that much sooner than the live-action one.

Now I feel like a poor Star Wars fan but what animarted series?

There are two Star Wars TV shows in the works. The first is an animated series. Not like Clone Wars. This will be computer generated (think Beast Wars . . . although I pray it looks better). It will take place between Episodes 2 and 3 and will tell some of the stories during the Clone Wars. According to Lucas, this is supposed to debut late next year. He's already opened up a facility and hired a bunch of artists (although I don't remember where).

The second will be the live-action show, and will take a little bit longer to get here. Lucas has given out a bunch of info on this and unfortunately, has also contradicted himself many times, so I'm not going to even attempt to try and list any details.

theforce.net has all the facts though, to those interested.

  12. I don't mean to stray off-topic, but does it seem like movie titles are getting worse? I mean, look at the titles here: The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno. Those titles kick ass! I can't think of a single title this year that really draws me in like those two do. Hell, even the Poseidon remake was just called "Poseidon", which is just bland.

  13. X3 is my favorite score of the year so far, but I don't see it receiving an academy award nomination.

As for Superman Returns getting a nomination . . . isn't there some rule against nominating a score that does not contain original music, or music previously scored?

They set that up in 2003, then in 2004, they gave it up and nominated Return of the King.

    Figures. Fuckin' academy . . .

*is still fumed over Geisha's defeat to Brokeback*

  14. X3 is my favorite score of the year so far, but I don't see it receiving an academy award nomination.

  15. B

Hard choice, but the score is there to serve the film. That's its primary purpose. That can also be done without compromising the score's ability to be listened to on its own. Besides, with the OSTs we get it's not like they give us the way the score was used exactly in the film anyway . . .
