No use bashing Mr Spielberg, I think the blame lies squarely on Lucas.
He took a generally formulaic approach to the prequels and music didn't quite enjoy the special attention it received in the Original Trilogy.

The Doctor's Libretto works quite well!
-
From what i've heard around these here parts, there are some pretty damn good musicians.
I don't see why any of the musicians here wouldn't try to go for it.

I still love the smell of burnt popcorn...
Gotcha - as do I
...the rustle of annoying lolly wrappers being opened...Fair enough - adds to the atmosphere, so I can dig it.
...and the chatter of bored teenagers. If it were up to me, I would send the flames of the sun itself to forever burn the eyes of said teenagers into oblivion, before smiting them to the fifth circle of hell for their transgressions.
But that's just me.
Btw - anymore info on the score?

This news brings tears of happiness to my parched eyes.
Especially needed in this time of need, where i've become jaded, cynical, and downright apathetic.
Thanks concord!

Alternate Main Titles for Wrath of Khan:
Hmmm, you didn't notice that I posted a link to my video here, did you?
Anyway,

Sounds very scottish in the main sections.

Oh man I am loving 'The Adventures of Mutt'.
If that's not a scherzo, I don't know what is.

I actually look forward to hearing what 'Russian' influences there are in the score. Would be a first from JW I would think?
-
I have been wondering about styles composers have for instrumentation: what instruments does Williams (or any composer) use more and what less? Do you hear an oboe in Goldsmith's scores often and so on. One might say that it depends on the film he is composing not having preferences and that could be true.
But still do you honorable film music fans think that there are certain styles visible concerning instruments?
John Williams likes French horns—a lot.
As does Goldenthal.

Mr. T pitys the fool who has premonitions of being underwhelmed by 30 second sample clips.
-
Do I hear a saxophone in some of those clips?
Would sure be fitting with the "Russian Theme" of the movie (i'm thinking of Shostakovich's use in the Jazz Suites).

Sweet zombie jesus, I was going to resist the temptation to listen.......but I think I will give in....to the dark side.
*off to listen now*

John Williams’ style, in my opinion, has improved. He has assimilated over the years an ever increasing variety of influences into his music (You can hear hints of John Adams in his latest scores and concert works), his technical control has become more fine-tuned (especially in terms of orchestration), and his musical signature has evolved into something more unique to him (He relies on fewer Straussian, Waltonian, and Korngoldian gestures). The idea that he can no longer compose in his old style because of old age is absurd; the way he writes now is much more technically sophisticated than how he used to write. Every good composer looks to reinvent themselves in different ways throughout their career so as not to fall into the trap of recycling the same musical material over and over again.
Well said.
Now get back on the wall!

I wake up every morning, turn the computer on, and the first thing that I do is look here and at other various sites for sound clips! I am patiently waiting....(maybe not so "patiently")!
You're not the only one buddy, it really is quite torturous.

Heheee just for the fun of it!
Very nice.

Spielberg only used the LSO for Raiders.
Damn - didn't know that.
Such a n00b mistake on my part.
-
You're right, Luke. The mix is terrible; however, the performance of the Raiders March lacks energy and strength. No mixing can obscure this fact.
Which begs the question why exactly Spielberg has dropped the LSO in recent years - I suppose I can understand him using a studio orchestra for some films, but to drop them entirely? Especially in a score for a blockbuster such as this?

People, people!
Let's remember that this is the internet - there is no modicum of respect or tact here, only the endless ramblings, musings and contrariness that anonymity brings.
That being said, I wouldn't change the internet (or this board) for anything - if I wanted civilized discussions I would talk to the boring rubes who surround me in my everyday life.

I was fortunate enough to see Raiders on the big screen a couple of years ago at the historic movie theater, The Colonial, in Phoenixville, PA. The theater's claim to fame is The Blob, which was shot there.
Ted
Hmmm...I've heard of that theater.
I think M. Night Shyamalan filmed some of his new film 'The Happening' there, if I remember correctly.
-
Hmmmm, it just occurred to me that most people would see Indiana Jones in the theater for the very first time!!!
Who here has seen TLC or even ToD in the theater? (I won't even ask about RotLA.)
This will be my first time seeing Indy in the theaters.

Respighi - Pines of Rome
How could I forget this, you are so right with that choice!

or as soon as I think of something that might fool you, I'll post it.
Nasty Tricksy Hobbits.

Gear up guys...Indy 4 samples are coming!
You betta back up that statement with evidence!
Only then i'll believe ya.

Excellent video - there has to be a collection of all the PBS recordings JW did with the Boston Pops somewhere? I remember even enjoying the classical repertoire they occasionally had.
