  1. Serra's Goldeneye score get soooo much undeserved hate. It really baffles me how people can think it's that bad. I personally love it.

It's definitely in my top three, alongside Casino Royale and Thunderball. I really like the comparison to the "cold war, snowy sound", I never looked at it that way.

Favorite cues would have to be Overture, WSTSP, and Fatal Weakness. FW is such an awesome tension builder with that driving industrial edge (this was back when industrial was more relevant). WSTSP and That What Keeps Us Alone feel like throwbacks to the Barry sound, with their more sweeping melodies. Run, Shoot, Jump is such a ballsy action cue. Explosive as hell. So much energy for a minute of a track.

I sort of clump Serra's work with Graeme Norgate and Grant Kirkhope's score for the 64 game. They both share a lot of similarities, you can tell they took inspiration from the film score there. Like MrJosh I was really young when both those came out in the mid-late 90s, so that sound takes me back to a certain period of life.

Just my two cents. Goldeneye is an excellent, unique score. Opinions are like like assholes. So there.

  2. There have been mentions that Sony ran it through some sort of process that enhanced the clarity slightly. Anyone else have opinions on this? I am considering replacing my old RCA releases that I have owned since 97 with this >

Quotes regarding the 2004 Sony release off Amazon...

"...Plus, it has been remastered with Sony DSD technology, which greatly improves the sound."
"...There is little noticeable improvement over the 1997 releases, except that you can, in some places, hear less background noise and hissing."

    2007 reissue of 2004 release...

"...Then, for the 2004 Sony Classical release, the music underwent Sony's Direct Stream Digital remastering, which provided a minimal amount of clarity. The sound of the 30th Anniversary Collection is exactly the same as that of the 2004 Sony Classical release.
"... I begin to think, that the best available editions of John Williams's classic are the 1997 RCA Victor editions, which have been digitally remastered and brought to life chronologically, as they are in the films. Since then, the 2004 Sony Classical edition, and then the 2007 edition is the exact same music in the exact same sound quality, which could be better. Maybe the digital technology has it's limits too, and the original 77-80-83 master tapes cannot allow any more enhancing, but I don't think, that the Throne Room and End Title from A New Hope has to sound so scratchy as it does in all of the editions.
  3. Man Against Beast - When we first see the shark in full as it passes beneath the Orca.

Reunion in the Tent/Searching for the Well - The fadeout.

Far from Home/E.T. Alone - The climax as the ship takes off and leaves Earth.

Luke & Leia's Theme - End Credits reprise.

    T-Rex Rescue/Finale - The whole thing!

  4. Really looking forward to what the 4 disc version is about. Recording sessions?

Does anyone here know how the tracks from the promo differentiate from the album tracks? How does the album and promo version of "YDDIC" differ?

Anyhow, the promo does need slight amount of editing. There is too much space of dead sound at the beginning and ends of some of the tracks. I'm thinking about omitting the mono tracks too. A real shame though, I remember watching the film and being mesmerized by the piece when the bug lands on Nytri's bow (Pure Spirits of the Forest on the promo).
