I thought someone from one of the labels (I think it was Lukas) reported that the masters for both of Poledouris' Conan scores were basically destroyed or lost?
It always depresses me to hear about lost, damaged and/or destroyed master tapes. Sigh...

Whoop, sorry, yeah, it keeps filling up. The book is called On the Track, and I highly recommend it!
Thanks a ton! Ordered!
That was me, and the thread is right here: http://jwfan.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18808
Ah, thank you. Yes, it's all coming back to me now.

The emotional music reaches its climax in Ron’s speech in the “wilderness” where the poetry of AD conveys the emotion in a single chord’s voicing. Stay tuned.
The emotional climax consists of a single chord's voicing?
Sounds like Nick Hooper to me.
Or maybe it's a quote of the THX logo theme chord. What a climax!

And when the flute plays Hedwig's Theme in that ethereal major modality (I forget which), I consistently get overcome by shivers.
Yes! Cool to know I am not alone in being moved by this music. I remember playing it for some family members, thinking they'd have the same reaction I did. I was met with statements like "where was the cool part?"
The recording of "Leaving Hogwarts" is just so much more tender and organic and lovely than "Reunion of Friends".
Yep. And "Reunion of Friends" has an overdone ending to match the overdone ending of the film. It's great music, but in that context, it just annoys me, because it practically screams, "Yeah, this movie was just like the first one, but a million times better! Yeah!" It would have worked just fine if it'd been written for the end of the last film...then it'd match the grand nature of the end of the series. But it's just one movie...and it's not even a movie that ends with a huge triumph: Hagrid comes back and has an awkward conversation while the ENTIRE GREAT HALL is dead silent just for them, and then everyone applauds, just for them.
But I shouldn't start on a COS rant right now. Might pop something. =/
Never thought of it that way, but now that I think about it, yeah that's exactly it!

I have a short list:
TPM: 4
AOTC: 3
ROTS: 3
Titanic: 2
The Dark Knight: 2
The list is short mostly due to lack of money. There have been quite a few films I'd not have minded seeing a few more times in the cinemas.

Hey Datameister,
was going to pm you but it's full. Quick question that is only slightly related to this topic.
I have this memory of you mentioning a cool book on film scoring. I remember that it has the complete cue list for HP: COS in it, among other cool stuff. What was the title of the book? I'd much like to read it.
And back on topic:
'Leaving Hogwarts' is among my top favorite cues in the world. The ending is just beautiful, magical and I think I may have gotten chills when I heard it along with the end of the film in the cinemas. I agree it would be amazing to hear it in the end.

I apologize if this is already common knowledge but...
is the "Harry's Wondrous World" from the COS album (with the exciting ending) a re-recording of the unreleased "Harry's Wondrous World" from the SS Children's suite, or is it in fact the same recording. Is this even known? I know that the unreleased children's suite version has the louder ending...
Sure hope that made sense.

Fight with the Troll.
Has cool horn parts and just overall cool action music.
My 2nd choice would be the Entry into the Great Hall. Love it!

HP:SS's "The Blue Forest" features a statement of one of Voldemort's themes that makes it bone-chillingly clear how appropriate it would be in the final installments of the saga. Not the three-note sorcerer's stone theme, not the slithery theme...the other one. Sooooooooo good.
I was originally going to say that I think it would need to be redressed in a darker, scarier way to fit in with how dark the films have become but then Datameister reminded me of that statement...very true.
I can also hear it working effectively when played angrily by trombones in low register. That's just me though.
I know this is off topic, but I really hope that the original "family/ memories" theme is used by Desplat. I loved that and was sad to see it go.

I can't vote because the (first three) Harry Potter scores are not the kind of scores that I really care to know the name of the track I'm listening to or what's going on in the movie as I listen to them. Actually, with all of the tons of albums I've been buying lately, I just hit play on the album and when it's over, I pick something else. There has to be a very good reason for me to stop and look at what I'm listening to, which is rare.
Hey, this is exactly what I've been doing recently. I remember a time when I would check to see the track names each time a track changed on my iPod/ computer/ cd player. These days I just play the score through pretty much (with a few exceptions).
I will put my vote in, but not just yet, I think I will listen through them all again to refresh my memory. It's been a while since I had some Harry Potter music in my life.

foreword by Burtt
"Fuck this book."
Too true. Burtt secretly hates John Williams, I bet.
I can see him sitting down to enjoy specially edited versions of the Star Wars saga with the 'annoying' score removed. Just pure sound effects bliss.

SW: Gold
ESB: Silver
RotJ: Bronze
Probably due to the expanded 2-CD sets that were released in 1997.
Yes.
Double yes

Ah, how could I have forgotten Jacob's Theme in my top 5 post! It should be in there somewhere...
-
It's a product of genetic testing/splicing of two species. They released it on the island to see how it adapts to its environment.
Classic.
Well, although I hadn't ever posted anything, I followed the original LOST thread since season 5ish and had many good times reading the stuff posted here. I do love the show, so many amazing moments. Not sure how I feel about the end yet. I haven't watched the Finale since it aired, though I need to go back and take it all in again.

I think this is a really cool idea to make these midi's! Great work on 'The Child Returns.' I would love to hear the others if they get uploaded again. Cool stuff!
-
They seriously explained the Hurley bird? How the heck did they do that?
-
Hopefully, if I get to interview Goldenthal, I'll be sure to ask him those questions.
I would be very interested in hearing his thoughts!
I am insanely excited for the Alien set and so sad that I don't think I'll be able to afford it for awhile. I've been asking family members to contribute to my "Alien Anthology fund." No luck so far...
-
That show just makes me wish I had something old and worth buckets of money.
-
I really do wonder what a Disney-ish animated movie John Williams score would be like. I just can't...quite...imagine it.
-
I havn't listened to the S6 CDs yet, but am way excited to.
My top five would be:
1. Ben's Theme (especially the sad/ harmonized versions)
2. Locke's Theme
3. Desmond and Penny Theme (or is it just Desmond?)
4. Claire's
5. Island mystery motif (I think that's what some have called it...plays when Juliet gets out of the sub and first sees the island...also played when people explore new areas I think)
Anyone have a theme they kind of dislike? Mine would be Hurley's. I know it's a fun, quirky little thing but it doesn't seem to fit in with the other's to me. Hope I don't offend too many Hurley's Theme lovers out there

Well, Williams ostensibly chose the order in which the Children's Suite is presented in the published sheet music, which is:
1. Hedwig's Theme (Children's Suite) [OST track "Prologue", or "Hedwig's Flight" in published sheet music]
2. Hogwarts Forever
3. Voldemort
4. Nimbus 2000
5. Fluffy and His Harp (Children's Suite)
6. Quidditch
7. Family Portrait
8. Diagon Alley (Children's Suite)
9. Harry's Wondrous World
Note that "Harry's Wondrous World" was NOT included on the OST - what you hear on the OST is "End Credits Part 1." "Harry's Wondrous World" apparently was written with the ending we hear on the COS OST, not the quieter ending written for the credits version. And then the longer version of "Hedwig's Theme" isn't part of the Children's Suite, so it's really up to you where to put it. I always put it right after "End Credits Part 1", before the Children's Suite, because it was probably intended to be used in the credits (as it indeed was).
So...to sum up...my preferred order for my HP:SS edit is:
1. score in intended chronological order
2. end credits
3. alternates, etc.
4. Children's Suite
Thanks for the order, Datameister. I've been wondering this!

I feel roughly the same way about Inception as I do about Batman Begins and TDK. These are scores that rattle you to the bone with viscerally effective tonalities and rhythms, which is exactly what a lot of people like in film scores. (I remember my roommate listening to one track from Inception over and over and over and over and over and over again a few weeks ago...and he's not a film score fan...) They just happen to lack any hint of subtlety, and all the creative originality is expressed in ways I don't care much about (e.g. developing a new sound from samples). The musical content itself is simplistic and raw. As a result, I'm torn between loving it and hating it.
But I didn't suggest Inception because of my opinions on Zimmer's score - I'd just be interested to hear how Williams would tackle the fascinating subject of dreaming.
Exactly my thoughts!
My picks would be:
1. Superman II - III
2. Narnia films
3. Die Another Day (just kidding)
Also, Hello everyone! I am a way long time reader, but quite the newbie for posting.

Favorite opener:
The Eyeland. It really is just so iconic. Whenever I hear it, I instantly see Jack laying there on the ground and I remember how awesome this show was when I first started to watch it. Well...it is still awesome, but things were different back then.
Favorite closer:
Oceanic 815. Still something about season one that has a magical hold on me, I guess
