  1. The accents in Jaws are very symmetrical and repetitious: da-da-DUM-da, da-da-DUM-da; they fall on the beat. In The Rite, however, the accents are intentionally off-kilter; sometimes they fall on the beat, at other times, off. The opening eight measures of the ostinato go like this: da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da, da-DUM-da-DUM, da-da-da-da, da-DUM-da-da, DUM-da-da-da, DUM-da-da-da, da-DUM-da-da. Stravinsky's rhythmic variations are numerous throughout.

  2. Didn't Giacchino write the new music for Space Mountain in Euro Disney?

Not sure about Euro Disney, but his music definitely plays at Disneland in Anaheim. I bought the "Official Album of the Disneyland Resort" last year when I was there, and it has Giacchino's music. Also, it has Williams's music from Star Tours and the Indiana Jones Ride.

  3. Answering this question can't be done by long pondering. The more you think about the question, the greater number of times you'll find yourself thinking "Oh, but what about . . ." Each movement so perfectly fulfills its role and uses its unique orchestral pallet to do so. From the opening bass figues of "Mars" to the final chorus of "Neptune" fading away into the icy depths of space, each planet becomes my favorite while I'm listening to it. In order to answer the poll, I went with immediate gut reaction: "Mercury, the Winged Messenger". I see I'm only the second to vote that way ( :) Ross)

Anthony, wondering who else has an orchestral score for this that they follow along with while listening.

  4. Since Joe's idea for the Top Ten list a few years ago is what actually got me to register here, I'll be more than happy to participate in this list as well.

#1 - The Cowboys Overture (By Request)

#2 - Journey to the Island (Jurassic Park)

#3 - The 'Float' (Catch Me If You Can)

#4 - Fawkes the Phoenix (The Chamber of Secrets)

#5 - The Battle of Hoth (The Empire Strikes Back Disc 1 [1997])

Anthony - who can think of about a dozen more tracks that deserve to be in the list.

  5. In order of purchase, I have

    The Cowboys Overture

Escapades for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra

    The Sorcerer's Stone - Children's Suite

    The Chamber of Secrets

    The Prisoner of Azkaban

    Call Of The Champions

    Battle Of The Heroes

    Across The Stars

My next purchase will probably be either Summon the Heroes or the Close Encounters Excerpts.

  6. I watched South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me back to back, and was actually in pain from laughing so hard.

Monty Python and The Holy Grail is a great comedy, but I'd say my favorite is It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. An absolute classic, from the moment Jimmy Durante kicks the bucket right up to Ethel Merman falling flat on her ass, the laughs just don't stop.

  7. Dumbledore is a Power Ranger.

Dumbledore was once the Transfiguration teacher, and most people agree that he is likely an Animagus, a form of self-transfiguration, less formally known as "morphin". None doubt Dumbledore's "power", he is indeed a "mighty" wizard.

    ----------------

JK Rowling is currently in talks with Stephen Sondheim to turn The Sorcerer's Stone into a big Broadway musical, starring Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp and Idina Menzel as the trio.

  8. This is an actual conversation I had with a friend who is on the fringes of the film score fan community.

Me: Oh, you bought a new CD. What is it?

Her: The Van Helsing soundtrack. I saw the movie last night and loved the music.

Me: Oh, that's Alan Silvestri. He's the guy who wrote the music for Back to the Future and Forrest Gump.

Her: Really? I'm a little surprised that I liked the music then. I didn't like the music for those movies at all. I don't think the music went well with the movie.

    Me: ;)

Anthony, :) "The Asteroid Field" - John Williams

  9. Its OK, Williams has no idea what the hell is going on in those movies. I love it. At one concert he said he was going to play the music for the 2 headed dog, and all the kids in the audience yelled "3 headed!" and williams blushed and said, "3 headed"

    :)

I remember the fourth of July Pops concert in the summer of '93 . . . . Williams said the orchestra would be performing the "Brontosaurus Rex Theme" from Jurassic Park.

I just received my copies of the three Harry Potter orchestral suites this afternoon. Great, great music . . . I especially am happy about having the Knight Bus and Fawkes's Theme.

  10. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I ended up using most of them. As well, I added the following:

    Wizard of Oz: The Cyclone

    Amazing Stories: The Landing

It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World: The Great Pursuit, The Living End

    Superman: Trip to Earth

Anyway, I fly tomorrow. Should be fun.

Anthony, wondering how he'll survive without his "Daily Dose of John Williams". :)

  11. Hey everyone,

I'm going to be flying to Oklahoma City in a couple of days for a business trip and thought that I would put together a travel/airport/flying CD to pass the time both in the air and during my two-hour layover in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Any suggestions for material to include? I'm not wanting a Williams-only CD, so anything from film scores, classical, pop/rock or Broadway would be appropriate. Thus far I have

Catch Me If You Can: The Float, Come Fly With Me

    ET: Adventures on Earth

The Terminal: The Tale of Victor Navorsky

Harry Potter: Hedwig's Theme, Fawkes the Phoenix, Buckbeak's Flight, The Knight Bus

    Wicked: Defying Gravity

    Rent: Santa Fe

Home Alone 2: The Arrival in New York

Hook: Banning Back Home, The Arrival of Tink and the Flight to Neverland

Like I said, not strictly Williams, but definitely Williams-centered.

    Anthony, excited about travelling again!

  12. Dry Your Tears, Afrika. You just can't get much more out of a chorus.

So true. I'd agree that this is the best of the group, but my favorite choral work is probably "Freedom Train" from Rosewood. It grabbed me from the moment I first heard it, and actually made me look back at other scores and realize what great choral writing John can do.

BTW, Ross, I love your new signature.

    Anthony.
