Speaking of character themes, I absolutely loved how Giacchino used the chords of the Kate-centric love theme when she told Jack "I've always been with you." Such a great moment, both show and music wise.

Yes, I remember seeing that when the video came out in December.
Looks like a new Dharma station...maybe it's called the Beacon?
Anyway, I echo all the praise of last night's episode. They've been consistently great so far this season, and have gotten better since the premiere, which is pretty rare. I loved seeing the Temple and finding out that it looks to be the monster's hideout....I wonder what Smokey did to Rousseau's team to "change" them? Montand yelling to them after getting pulled down into the hole seemed like a trick, so maybe Smokey does some sort of weird possession thing to people. Can't wait to find out more...I like how it appears to be such an organic, amorphous entity, yet sounds very mechanical.
Charlotte's death was pretty unexpected for me...I'm not surprised she died, but I thought it would be later. It was done well, and was actually pretty sad. She was kind of a bitch last season, but I'd warmed up to her a good deal. And it was nice to hear "Life and Death" in that restrained, almost cameo sort of way.

I really want Williams to win best score for this
I really want him to write a score that deserves it.
-
Oh well we might get a decent Americana score with another guest soloist
That seems pretty inevitable. What do we think....Tim Morrison on trumpet again? Someone he's used less frequently like Mark O'Connor on the violin or even James Thatcher on horn (that would be sweet)? Or maybe some acclaimed banjo player from Tennessee.

Hmm, toughie. I mostly ranked according to how much I enjoy listening to each score, rather than what I consider to be objectively better (ie, I don't think Schindler's List is musically worse than Crystal Skull, even though I ranked the latter higher).
1.) E.T. the Extra-terrestrial
2.) Raiders of the Lost Ark
3.) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
4.) Jaws
5.) Hook
6.) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
7.) Close Encounters of the Third Kind
8.) Amistad
9.) Jurassic Park
10.) A.I. Artificial Intelligence
11.) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Cyrstal Skull
12.) The Lost Word
13.) 1941
14.) Saving Private Ryan
15.) Schindler's List
16.) The Terminal
17.) Catch Me If You Can
18.) Empire of the Sun
19.) Munich
20.) Always
21.) Minority Report
22.) War of the Worlds
I've only heard a couple pieces from Sugarland Express, so I can't really compare it.

"Neverland Theme" and "Far and Away Main Theme/Love Theme."

If I remember correctly, she's one of the few other members from Michigan. Way to represent!
Oh, and happy birthday to J-Dubb...80's just around the corner!

Five, of course. An amazing piece of work as part of the film, and an absolute joy to listen to on its own. Especially the unbridled enthusiasm of the seafaring sequences.

If I were building a major 7th chord based on A natural, would this be my chord:
A-C sharp-E-G sharp
I believe that's correct, but obviously there'll be several others who can tell you for sure.
When you say you're beginning to delve into all this, are you studying it in as in a class, or doing your own research...?

Regarding the boat coming with them through time, Juliet did say in one of the first two episodes that it looks like whatever they have with them at the time of the flash comes along (because Faraday and the extras were still in the Zodiac after the first flash).
-
I did notice that the sound seemed muffled, though I was watching it in HD.

Great episode! Very character-oriented, which I loved. Random thoughts:
After seeing the "Previously on Lost..." segment, I figured it'd be Mrs. Littleton who was seeking custody of Aaron. Not convinced she's really oblivious to the whole cover-up surrounding him.
Seeing the hatch light in the distance was sweet.
Juliet whipping out the gun on the boat = badass.
Rousseau returns!! Can't wait to see more of her and the team, though there's obviously not much good in store for them.
And I noticed what might be the first new musical theme of the season. It played when Sawyer saw Kate in the jungle, and then later when he told Juliet about it. Very nice.
This season is terrific so far, and I'm used to the time travel element now. It all definitely feels like Lost!

I actually haven't listened to this in quite some time, but I do remember and enjoy all the themes (especially the love theme!). The motif from "Val's First Drive" is great too. This'll give me a good reason to give the whole score another whirl.
-
Wow, I love that arrangement...I have that Spielberg/Williams recording and must've overlooked it. Great brass intro!
-
That's pretty neat.
-
I thought it was a huge improvement over the previous two episodes, which were pretty blah. And I don't think there was anything more over-the-top than the Dwight vs. Andy storyline from a couple episodes ago. For me, definitely one of the best of the season.

Oh man, those articles are a riot. Check out "9 Foreign Rip-Offs Cooler Than the Hollywood Originals". My favorite's the Turkish E.T.
-
Joe's article is definitely worth anyone's while who'd like to familiarize themselves with the show's multitude of themes. It's the definitive - and as far as I know, the only - listing available.
Speaking of which, and maybe this would be better asked in the Lost thread, but has anyone noticed any new themes in Season 5 so far? I haven't yet, but there have been plenty of welcome renditions of familiar themes.

I enjoyed the promo for "Cabin Fever" last year, featuring Hurley's ominous "We're all gonna die!" which turned out to be a reference to playing Risk.

For example, the enhanced episode of "The Lie" mentioned that Ms Hawking's full name is Eloise Hawking, which is why pretty much everyone assumes that Ellie (blonde Other from 1954) is a young Eloise Hawking.
Oh, sh1t! I guess that puts all speculation to an end!
-
Does anybody know if all the actors are still on board?
From the above article:
Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley will be returning as Prince Caspian, Edmund and Lucy while Will Poulter from Garth Jennings' Son of Rambow will play Eustace Clarence Scrubb.I guess Peter and Lucy aren't in it.

The music is too flighty and non-threatening, and it feels totally out of place in the scene. I know the scenario is ridiculous, but shouldn't we be feeling some kind of tension or suspense when a hero and villain are dueling on moving cars? Williams rarely outright misses the mark in terms how the music interacts with the action, but here he may have been way off.The piece is great.
Agree with both. Great fun on its own, but way too light and jaunty for the scene.
Catch Me if You Can - Escapades on SACD
in JOHN WILLIAMS

Cool news! Is "Escapades" comparable to the concert pieces on the soundtrack, or is it more of a different arrangement (besides the sax being more prominent, obvisouly)?
