  1. UGH - what a misallocation of time if ever I saw one! I was expecting Williams to be a guest-who-happened-to-also-play-music, as happens sometimes. Isn't he worth it?

I didn't notice the so-called page-turn flub, but I was actually wondering why Williams didn't bring a page-turner with him. That sort of thing is pretty standard...

Beautiful arrangement - I would loved to have heard better balance between the instruments, though. I heard a LOT of cello (which was beautiful), but he often masked the piano.

However, I loved it anyway. I can't imagine having been close enough to see the looks on their faces as they played together! Collaborative piano is such an amazing thing, and to have been able to watch Williams as he played - priceless. Bravo to them!

SeekUYoda, ;) for the people who actually got to BE there!

  2. A completely left-field observation, where the hell are all the women? Don't women in general have any interest in musical composition (that isn't pop related)? Seriously.

We do - there's just not many of us. And those that are the age to appreciate aren't the age that most uses the internet. But we're out there. And as soon as I get home to my own computer you better believe my first order of business will be watching this interview! I'm so out of touch - I didn't even know about the Golden Globe! (hangs her head in shame)

  3. The music is OK and does work in the movie mostly, but completely lacks the absolute brilliance that is even apparent in lesser John Williams scores.

This is exactly what I said when we left, after I woke up from the end titles.

My favorite part was the arrival of Durmstrang & Beauxbatons.

I am aware that I could be biased and bitter, so I'll have to give this another listen in a while, when I'm over my initial impression.

  4. (theme from Glory bears a resemblance to a theme in Ivan the Terrible by the way).

Yes, a "I ripped this directly out of the "Ivan's Illness" theme resemblance."

I love Ivan - You might also like his "Ode to the End of the War." It's fun, and is one of the few pieces in the repertoire that has 4 separate piano parts!!!!! (as in, for 4 grand pianos on the stage!)

  5. I agree, renaissance music does sound the same because it’s dreadful.

Well, I can't let this one go by. Renaissance music is not all dreadful. Is there a particular piece or composer you think is dreadful? Most Renaissance music is beautiful... orderly... fairly uncomplicated to digest... and really fun to play. And if you want to really get into it, you can have hours of fun looking for word-painting in madrigals. Or David Munroe - have you ever seen a tape of him playing shawms? Hysterical. It can't be dreadful if he's having that much fun playing it!

There are of course Renaissance-era composers who aren't Josquin and Palestrina - some truly dreadful, but others truly magnificent. Give them a chance.

  6. I got Stanley and Iris last year - it's cute, but I listen to it about as frequently as Stepmom.

Stanley and Iris is much better. It's really a genuine gem because lyrical works performed in a chamber setting are not widely spread in Williams' oeuvre. And the writing is truly delicious. It's very melodic and expresses deep emotions. Stepmom is more functional wallpaper.

I definitely agree. I've listened to both of them three times and Stanley and Iris really stands out to me as being the far better effort.

I'll give it another go, then. Maybe I was in the wrong mood or preoccupied - oh, wait, I remember. I got a bunch of other JW stuff at the same time, so maybe it just got overlooked?

  7. I agree with most of the above, especially Nixon and Jane Eyre and most especially JFK. I heard The Motorcade for the first time on the Horn Concerto concert two years ago with the CSO and ... well, I rave about The Motorcade a lot now.

I'd add The Lost World theme. I listened to that a lot (and JP) as I drove the road to Hana (Maui) recently. That was a very fitting track and a fun listen in general. I wonder why that doesn't pop up in more concerts? It's very exciting, what with all the mixed meter and percussion!

I got Stanley and Iris last year - it's cute, but I listen to it about as frequently as Stepmom.

I think The Mission from AMAZING STORIES is an overlooked gem of a score and written in a most heroic vein.

    I agree.

I just saw "The Mission" from Amazing Stories and really loved it. I think that soundtrack will be my next major quest!

  8. "Anakin's Dark Deeds" - the REAL version. Still my favorite, since the first time I heard it in the film.

I had typed out "The Motorcade" (from JFK) and realized I'm still more excited about Anakin's Dark Deeds. Maybe it will change soon? I've been listening to all 3 Potters in a row the last few days, and that's been fun too... and this doesn't even begin to get into non-film tracks.

Morlock, are you expanding your Doyle collection in antipation of GoF?

  9. On Sesame Street, during the "Elmo's World" segment, Elmo pretended to be a shark once (he dropped down under our view and put his hand up on his head and moved across the screen, going "da-duh," etc.) and once talked about a shark while a cartoon-y version of the Jaws theme played.

  10. Quiet! No slapping!

Wow... 10 years of amazon.com. I remember when it first started, I thought "No was is this going to last." Nobody I knew thought it was safe to buy anything on the internet. But amazon was the first site the people around me "trusted...." wow.

  11. I don't hear it either. I even went back and listened to "The Arrival of Baby Harry," and the only similarity I hear is the use of celeste in octaves.

The celeste in ROTS seems to be filling a couple bars in the right key and mood before the Force theme horn solo comes in - it doesn't contain any major thematic material, but is just a nice little arpeggiated thing on a celeste.

The celeste in "Arrival" begins the track with the melody, also in octaves, but that goes on to be the "theme" for that track. So, I add my vote that this is not a nod to HPSS.

  12. Sorry, I don't know... is there somewhere on the internet where you can still see the trailer?

But I did have to mention how much I really like the theme from The Lost World. Very exciting! It gets overlooked sometimes, but that's a fun score!
