I think Doyle will do well. Why not Bill Ross though? He seemed logical. I hope that Doyle does more of an adaptation kind of score rather than come up with new stuff. It wont be the same but it won't be a complete loss. I bet he will do much better then Davis did in JP3.

PS i am pissed that SW Battlefront is not coming out for MAC. I have to use my Xbox which means I cannot play it unless i subscribe to their non sense pay on line BS. go macs.

I agree its a mistake. Perhaps we will get new DVD's and a new mix when 7.1 mixing becomes main stream. This new mix is pretty weak in general. I just watched the first ten minutes of ANH and noticed that the music fader rides real low during the star destoyer flyover right after the crawl - it just seems pretty lame. Is this different then the other releases - I don't have the other versions to compare to? It seems like sound wise there is not much going on there and its quite noticeable. At Disneyland there is some ride which has a 13 channel mixdown - i think a bruce broughton piece. Mixing like that with that many channels is an art - 5.1 is a standard practice - i wonder if the board they used for this mix was messed up. I do see plenty of engineers intown here in LA drinking coffee and such right over their 2million dollar board. they are crazy!
I can not believe after all this time they have messups like this. It is not like it was rushed to get out - they have had plenty of years! BTW - Anyone else's box messed up?? My embossing is way off from the print on the box. If I knew how to upload a picture I could post a pic of it. Didn't even notice at the store. I just feel like taking it back. Anyway SW Battleground looks cool - anyone buy it yet?

James Horner is the most hated composer in the business by other people in the business. Stories go on and on....and he stole his braveheart theme from some unknown American Folk Song which I have forgotten the name to. But yes ST2 rocks - i just bought it a little while back.

Did you ever think if Lucas had "actually" (like he claims to have) thought out the entire trilogy - and even double trilogy - before shooting the first frame, he would have had Luke make out with his sister? Face it - hes going by the seed of his pants and I guess he feels he has the power to go "back" in time and CGI anything he didn't like in the original. Also don't you think if JW would have thought of the Imperial March Theme before Empire he would have stuck that in a few times in a New Hope. He comes soooo close to doing it a few times - especially in the blockade running opening. I guess it is somewhat cool that these films seemed to have evolved as the people behind the scenes became more familiar with the stuff themselves.

very close - but certain parts are different

M = Music = Mx
Any letters after the title is the revision number.
I remember James Newton Howards saying he once did a cue with over 40 revisions.
Talk about an anal director.
-
1m1 = Reel 1 Cue 1
5m3 = Reel 5 Cue 3
etc.. similar to Opus 48 no 2... etc - library system

I wish he would have done Fawkes the Pheonix - I think thats the best cue in the harry potter trilogy. The flutist did a good job on that solo with the butterfly in the movie, i always thought it was wierd that he finished that one run in the middle of it with the pic. Its really good writing - I hope he gets an oscar nod for this one - and wins of course. If other people can win with whole notes < > ing then this should certainly win.

I agree the concert was just great. JW looks to be pretty healthy for his age. The LA string section is just tremendous - they are dead on all the crazy sixteenth note runs. I also agree that the second half of the program was better - and either more well rehearsed or more well known by the orchestra. I went on Friday - and there were quite a few mistakes during the olympic stuff. The chorus sounded great also. I wonder why they didn't do the prolouge and why they took cuts on some of the charts. It was nice for JW to introduce his mother, perhaps old age runs in the genes - (hopefully).

JW - uses alot of synth. Especially in early scores of the 90s. His celeste from home alone and jurassic park are synth (they sound more like a rubber mallets on the glock then a celeste). Also in jurassic park there are alot of synth percussion stuff - ie dennis steals the embryo. Sometimes he also uses synth strings in clusterish things where he has the violins divided a3 or more. Its hard to tell based upon how good the production is. The only sound i ever ran accross was magic bells on an old alesis POS keyboard (used alot in home alone) ....I am just wondering where the other ones are.

or we could just listen to the cds.

Does anyone know the samples/keyboard that john williams uses?
Especially his
celeste
magic bells
tuned log drums
boo bams
groans
owl calls
etc....
basically the stuff he uses in his scores?
-
JW keeps his original multiline sketches - that he conducts off of. The orchestrator's do make full scores - and that was what the had there. Hmmm.... i didn't see any security cameras there..... JK!

let me know if any of you work there

Did you know that all the john williams scores since Jaws are sitting in boxes (the original pencil orchestrations and parts) in this music notation company's storage room? I've seen them - like a whole WALL full of John Williams pencil masters. They've just been sitting there for years not doing anything.

Oh and Copland's App. Spring Suite - the original 13 instrument version.
The most gorgeous part - right after the final quote of the famous Shaker tune....absolutely brilliant harmonies in those string chords following.
-
The two prominant, brilliant Bartok pieces:
Music for strings, celeste, and percussion
and Concerto for Orchestra ( especially the second movement)
are some of the finest and most imaginative pieces ever written.
They are "must own" CD's and scores for any serious film composer.
Additionally: Ravel's Suite from Daphnes et Chloe - fall in the same category.
They rank towards the top of most commonly "borrowed" classical pieces for current and past film composers.

what about the ET guy??
-
PS The Enigma Variation was Number 13 - specifically between Rehearsal Numbers 58 & 59.
-
Anyone know the name of the pianist on Hook and on ET??
I forgot the ET guys name - and I dont know if he was the same guy on Hook.
I know he broke his arm falling off the stage at the ET Anniversary rehearsal and cant play anymore.
thanks

rach 3 is amazing.......

Harrison Ford is like 62 now. That should make for some really interesting fight scenes. I hope he has been taking his vitamins.

One obvious mix thing in hook is when the fat kid is eating his invisible sandwich - listen to how much that tuba solo pops out. Anyway there are alot of alternate versions of that cue on the bootlegs. But still he has to be writing so much music to complete the soundtrack and also score the movie. Listen to how different the first jack baseball scene in hook is to the soundtrack.
And the composer for Harry Potter & GOF is.......

I had heard through someone really really close to JW that this last potter movie really, really drained him. I mean be fair to the man - he is getting up there in the years. Most people his age are allready retired for some years by now. It is not like he is doing this for the money anymore. Anyone who has ever looked at a full score or worked on a movie can truly appreciate how much work goes into it. Doyle will do good - but we should have had Bill Ross.
