  1. After the last SW score I have very low expectations on the music front unfortunately. However, I have every expectation that the new movie will be better than the last two. Unless George Lucas has decided that Howard the Duck should appear to kill Mace Windu...

From the composition point of view or the music editing?

We all know how butchered this stuff gets. I have really enjoyed both the prequel scores - some moments more than others of course.

  2. I make my living as a pianist - composer (as do a few other members of this board). So I can read music, and often get hired to sight read stuff like the Brahms Violin Sonaten and Mozart Arias hours before a concert. It is interesting that reading music doesn't seem to have much effect on how much you enjoy it.

  3. Found some mistakes in the movies (as compared to the soundtrack)

    JAWS

Right after the first barrel goes under....

Clarinet line states the fanfare ish motif as a eighth - eight pattern (movie) rather then the dotted eighth - sixteenth pattern (soundtrack).

    RETURN OF THE KING

During the Lighting of the Beacons:

The Climax of the huge string part and brass part

    on my dvd 48:34

is a different chord then the soundtrack

(trumpet fanfare may be a bit different)

RETURN OF THE JEDI (Old news)

Extra grace notes on the high trumpet during the main title crawl - not on any other star wars soundtrack or film.

    Ok sorry for nitpicking

  4. I regard his Theme from Sabrina as a one-movement pianoconcerto. It has the same grand feeling as Rachmaninoffs and Addinsells pianoconcertos.

Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto Maybe - not a fair comparison to the Rachmaninoff Concerti IMO.

I think he should write a piano concerto, after all it is his primary instrument. But then again the great piano concerti are just so hard to be compared to, maybe he is like intimidated or something.

  5. I dont know AI very well is it bad??

I am looking at the orchestral scores and listening to the mix. And I just think alot of the mixing is just great - I am wondering how much is done on the stand and how much is done at the board. Like how the williams woodwinds/brass fanfares are in great balance. Anyone got any info on that?

  6. Shawn Murphy is JW's mixer and the man is a genious. I believe Willams owes alot of his success and his sound to this man. Only saying this after working with many amatuer mixers who don't actually listen to what is going on in the music but only to the things they need to listen to. (phasing, clicking).

Listen to how well mixed Jurassic Park is, compare it to the other recordings of the suite in concert.

  7. It is both. It was recorded live. I know some people who orchestrated on it, basically it is layers upon layers. For example everthing the horns play is doubled by synth horns (that distinctive overblow sound). Also they use the trombones and cellos as super doublers, they stay after the session and double the other parts. For example it would be common to have cellos double the viola part after the session. Either way everything is doubled by synth, and the woodwind section is hardly used. To me it sounds like 500 people playing.
