Ludwig 1,121
Hijust wanted to make sure I've got this right. In the harmony you are allowed ...root,third and fifth of the key .like this ?Horn fifths are what he has in the first three notes of the excerpt. They have their own name because they're an acceptable instance of "hidden fifths", in which a perfect fifth is approached by similar motion. It's the inevitable result of having unvalved brass play in harmony together and you'll find it absolutely everywhere in Baroque and Classical music. tedfud 38
Are the secundal clashes an intentional modernism?nope...i want to add a harmony to each note using horn fifths. So i ( perhaps incorrectly ) thought any note could be harmonised with either ....f,a,c,.....those where my only choices....is that wrong ?unless i am misunderstanding what horn fifths are, and they are in fact, just the first three notes ?t
Ludwig 1,121
unless i am misunderstanding what horn fifths are, and they are in fact, just the first three notes ?It's a bit of a misnomer because they're not an interval but a series of intervals played one after the other. It is just the first three notes (which could alternatively be played in the reverse order as well).

Sharkissimo 1,973
That's the right. The other notes are contrapuntal (the minor second is more 20th century - something you might find in a neoclassical work) and certainly sound good, but are not hidden consecutive (horn) fifths.
