Stefancos:  Nixon is a great film, isn't it?  I've always really liked it and thought Hopkins should've won that year......or maybe Sean Penn.

Can't remember who else was nominated that year, but Hopkins did an outstanding job in Nixon, think how simply this role could have turned into a "impersonation", instead, although looking and sounding only vaguely like the real Nixon, he became him, Joan Allen was also excellent as his loving, but realistic wife, and I just love Bob Hoskins as Hoover and Paul Sorvino as Kissenger.

The score works brilliantly in the film too.

Stefancos- who must watch this film again soon.

I totally agree with the Joan Allen bit. Paul Sorvino and Powers Boothe were both great as well. But Allen is a powerful actress. I hope she really takes off. She was excellent in The Contender, don't you think? And in The Crucible? She was nominated for both of them, actually.

And, that year, if I remember correctly, Tony Hopkins lost to Nicolas Cage for Leaving Las Vegas. Sean Penn was nominated for Dead Man Walking as was Richard Dreyfuss for Mr. Holland's Opus and the Italian guy that was in Il Postino (The Postman).

Regardless of how impressive Cage was in his film, I still think Tony should've won for Nixon. Who cares if he had won 4 years before? He still deserved it!

Director - still upset that Russell Crowe lost this year

:) "Rowena" from Mr. Holland's Opus (Kamen)

James Levine is an excellent music director.

:)

Good orchestra-builder; boring conductor.

With a friend like this, Wagner doesn't need any enemies.
