ilovehotsax 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 I'm a little confused so I thought I would see if anyone could explain. Is the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra the Boston Pops Orchesta, Boston Symphony Orchestra or are they a completly different orchestra? Thanks so much!
Guest macrea Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Esplanade members are in the Pops. Pops members are in the Symphony. Also I think that Esplanade can have some so-called "pick-up" players to fill in for tours or engagements where some Pops members are unavailable.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,390 Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Who knows what goes on before they step onto the ring...eeehhh stage.
Miguel Andrade 1,728 Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 The esplanade orchestra is the "other" Pops orchestra. It may or not have Boston Pops/Symphony musicians. A memorable ocasion was when they were in the re-inauguration of the Statue of Liberty, and the Boston Pops had a previous comitement, and Williams took the Esplanade Orchestra to play in New York.
KingPin 247 Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 Being originally from Boston, I can hopefully clarify this once and for all. The Boston Pops Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra are the exact same orchestra, minus the 12 principal chairs who tour during Pops season as the BSO Chamber Players. The Esplanade Orchestra is a completely separate orchestra made up of other local area musicians. The Esplanade Orchestra performs most often in the summer, when the BSO takes up residence at Tanglewood, but also occasionally throughout the year, possibly as a means to give the regular BSO/Pops members a day off. Hope this is informative!
