In the 100 years since the famed RMS Titanic hit an iceberg and plunged into the ocean, it has been celebrated on stage, television and in film. This collection of new recordings, which features extensive liner notes by Randall Larson, celebrates the music from these productions. TITANIC: AN EPIC MUSICAL VOYAGE will be available digitally on April 3rd, and CDs begin shipping on April 10, 2012, the 100th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic. The heart of this musical voyage is the music composed by James Horner for the Academy Award winning film TITANIC. In addition to a number of tracks of the score from the film, singer c performs “My Heart Will Go On.” Also featured on this album are tracks from S.O.S. TITANIC (Howard Blake), RAISE THE TITANIC (John Barry), “The Titanic Trot” from TV’s THE TIME TUNNEL (John Williams), and selections from Maury Yeston’s Tony winning musical TITANIC. Rounding out this recording are two historical tracks, an arrangement of traditional Irish Music (by Joohyun Park) and “Nearer, My God, To Thee”, the hymn reportedly performed by the Titanic’s dance band as the ship went down. “We’ve taken these film scores and reimagined them into a different kind of compilation album,” said the album’s producer, Ford A. Thaxton. “This is a very different take on it. We wanted to do something that would have a timeless quality to it.” The label turned to Dan Redfeld to launch this musical voyage. Redfeld has had a lifelong interest in the Titanic. “I’m not sure I know what the attraction was,” he said. “It’s the fact that it was the grandest ship in the world and it hits an iceberg and sinks and 1500 people go down. It's the whole series of little events that lead to this massive catastrophe. It’s the people who stayed at their posts, particularly the stokers under the ship who kept the ship lit and the band playing on until the last moments. I don't know if that kind of character exists anymore. There is just such incredible drama about it and I think it's what gets to people about it. The epic-ness of the disaster, for a composer, evokes passionate music.” Dan Redfeld is a classically trained concert pianist and composer/conductor who studied at Boston’s New England Conservatory. While many of his fellow students were embracing modernistic, atonal music, Redfeld was more interested in tonal, neo-romantic music. He has written music for stage, concert performance and screen. The premiere of his latest opus, Travels for Piano Quartet, was performed by Central4, a chamber group that named him Composer-In-Residence. Redfeld is currently musical directing and conducting Eli Villanueva’s opera, The White Bird of Poston, for the Los Angeles Opera. I have, and posted my thoughts above. No need to be defensive by the way, I'm one of the defenders of BSX all the time. Instead of telling people to go listen to the samples (when they've already done so), I think it'd be better if you just told how the rerecording was done, so everyone who's interested in the release would know what to expect. I haven't heard the CD, but I think this release should be very interesting for the people interested in the Howarth & Carpenter material; and not so much for people who want the Morricone score, because of the synths. As far as we care concerned, the end result is what matters at the end of the day. It's sort of like seeing sausage made, it's not pretty, but if you want to enjoy the hot dog, don't watch it being made. :-) That's why we tell folks to listen to the clips and make up their own minds. There is less then 42 minutes of score in the film itself, including the opening and closing titles. Our release features all of the music that appeared on the soundtrack (much of which wasn't used in the film) as well as the few cues done by John Carpenter and Alan Howarth at the last minute before dubbing. GRACE tells the story of Madeline Matheson, a young mother who loses her unborn child during her eighth month of pregnancy. Madeline insists on carrying the baby to full term and, following the delivery, the child miraculously returns to life with an appetite for human blood. With nowhere to turn, Madeline must make a mother's ultimate decision: What will she sacrifice to keep her child alive? GRACE originally began life as a short film in 2006 and was very well received critically, encouraging the director to turn it into a feature. To prepare for GRACE, composer Austin Wintory wrote a twenty minute “pre-score” for director Paul Solet, with the intention of having music available to play back for the cast and crew as the film was being made. When it came time to think about music for the film, the composer began to assemble a palette of sampled recordings that included horse flies, baby toys, actual babies, vocalizations performed by actress Jordan Ladd and other natural sounds recorded on the shooting location of the film. The next step would be to combine his palette with more traditional stringed instruments and a massive clarinet ensemble, along with the amazing vocal talents of Lisbeth Scott. The final result is a unique film score that will continue to reward listeners with repeated listens. Austin Wintory began studying piano in Denver, Colorado at age 10 and began composing almost immediately. By the time he graduated from high school, Austin had conducted his own works in nearly a dozen different orchestra concerts, written music for a start-up computer game, performed a commissioned piece for a Youth Summit convention's opening ceremony and composed and conducted an hour-long orchestral score for a former teacher’s wedding ceremony and reception. He was also a commissioned composer for a Colorado Symphony chamber ensemble, the “Up Close and Musical.” His first film score, composed for the silent short, NUTS&BOLTS, directed by Newell Todd, won the Golden Silent Series score competition and received a double performance live at NYC's Lincoln Center, synched to the film. Austin received separate awards for two brass quintet works, a woodwind quintet and string quartet, as well as an orchestral work. He later received the Alan Menken Award, a distinction given annually by the legendary Disney composer. Austin has remained busy composing a slew of scores for nearly ninety productions, ranging from short and feature films, to computer games, TV shows and commercials, corporate videos, podcasts, video art installations and even books on tape. He has also had success as a concert composer. His concert works have been performed through various Manhattan venues, and across the pond in Europe. His commissions include works for the Black Sea Philharmonic in Constanta, Romania, two orchestral works for the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra in Port Charlotte, Florida, a chamber work for the Colorado Music Teacher's Association and an orchestra piece for the Colorado Youth Symphony and, for the Thorton Symphony Orchestra at the University of Southern California, "Space, Time and Plexiglass", in honor of the works of filmmaker Joss Whedon. In the clinic, she meets Dan Marshall, a brilliant plastic surgeon who uses his skills to transform her into a beautiful woman. RETURN TO EDEN began as a three part mini-series shown on Australia's Network Ten in 1983 and was meant to compete with other successful primetime soap operas of the day imported from America such as DYNASTY and DALLAS and was equally unapologetic in its extremes to entertain the audience. The mini-series was so successful on Australian television that a regular weekly series was developed and began airing in 1986. The events of the regular series took place seven years later, with Stephanie now married to Dan and living in the family home with her children. This album contains music composed and conducted by Brian May for both series. Born in Adelaide in 1934, Brian May (no relation to Brian Harold May of Queen) was one of the first composers to achieve international acclaim as an Australian composer and was best known as the composer of MAD MAX and THE ROAD WARRIOR (MAD MAX II). May received his musical training as a pianist, violinist and conductor at the Adelaide Elder Conservatorium. He joined the Australia Broadcasting Company in 1957, where he formed the ABC Adelaide Big Band, an ensemble that performed all manner of light music for broadcast, and May became a leading figure in Australian light music as a result. He moved to Melbourne in 1970 to arrange and conduct the ABC’s Melbourne Show band. Moving into film music in a period of time when Australia’s film industry was just beginning to take its place among international film circles, May composed such notable film scores as RACE FOR THE YANKEE ZEPHYR, ROAD GAMES, CLOAK AND DAGGER, DEATH BEFORE DISHONOR, MISSING IN ACTION 2, SKY PIRATES, STEEL DAWN, DR. GIGGLES, FREDDY’S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHT MARE and BLINDSIDE. He won the Australian Film Institute Award for best original score with MAD MAX; many other awards followed, including the Golden Award from the Australian Performing Rights Association. Born in 1933, in York, England, composer John Barry is known the world over for his work on the James Bond series, beginning in 1963 with FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and scoring nearly all of the Bond films up until 1987 with THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. He has received the Academy Award four times for his work on BORN FREE, THE LION IN WINTER, OUT OF AFRICA and DANCES WITH WOLVES. He has also received a Grammy for his score to DANCES WITH WOLVES. They chose Lee Holdridge, a composer with a history of delicately highlighting the emotional moments of his subjects in a subtle manner. For the film, the composer has written a intimate acoustic score, augmented by strings, guitar and piano, including a song written and performed by John Ondrasik, based on the main theme. Lee Holdridge was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1944. He spent his early years in Costa Rica, beginning music studies on the violin at the age of ten with Hugo Mariani, then the conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. Later, Holdridge moved to New York to continue his music studies and begin his professional career as a composer. Holdridge's successes in New York came to the attention of Neil Diamond who brought Holdridge to Los Angeles to write arrangements for his forthcoming albums. A string of Gold and Platinum hits followed, which led to Diamond and Holdridge collaborating on the film score for Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Since that time, Holdridge has scored numerous film such as Splash, Big Business, Mr. Mom, Micki & Maude, 16 Days Of Glory, The Beastmaster, Sylvester, A Tigers' Tale, El Pueblo Del Sol, Old Gringo and Pastime. THE MOLE is based on the original series DE MOL, produced in Belgium. Regarded as “the smartest reality show ever”, the premise of the show is for at least ten players to gather and participate in various tests (games, physical challenges, puzzles, etc.) to try to earn money for a cash pot that can increase up to a maximum of $1,000,000. One of the contestants is a mole, out to sabotage the games and prevent money from being added to the pot while avoiding or deflecting suspicion. The game continues in each episode until only three players are left. Two contestants and the mole. The contestant who scores the highest on the final quiz wins the game and the entire cash pot. For DE MOL, the show would frequently use musical excerpts from well known film scores by John Williams, Bernard Herrmann, Hans Zimmer and others. To license the same music here in the United States would be cost prohibitive therefore the producers chose to engage the services of David Michael Frank to compose a musical library for the U.S. version of the show. A previous volume of music for THE MOLE was released by Varese Sarabande in 2000 and included music that was used in the first four seasons of THE MOLE and CELEBRITY MOLE. The producers of the show hired Frank again in 2008 to record an entirely new orchestral score for the show and the music was recorded in March 2008, performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, with some additional electronic sweetening later in Los Angeles. Frank’s orchestral score for Season Five of THE MOLE is an excellent showcase for the composer’s many fine talents and listeners who may only be familiar with the scores for his earlier action films will be overwhelmed by his new work presented on this album. David Michael Frank was born in Baltimore, Maryland, where he studied piano and composition at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and was a soloist with the Peabody Orchestra at age sixteen. Since moving to California in 1978, Frank has been a prolific composer in many different genres. He has worked for directors such as Andrew Davis, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Wes Craven, William Shatner and Robert Townsend. Vickers’ music for the film is a mixture of orchestral acoustics with electronic instruments, incorporating modernistic, pop-jazz styled rhythms, Gothic tonalities with snare drum, organ and cymbals, reworked with horns, saxophone, bongos and drumkit. In this case, Dr. Jeffrey Clive used gamma radiation to heal a man who was in poor health. This man, Del Frye, had become embittered from being constantly bullied by the local townspeople. Because of his mental state, the creature that was created from his exposure to gamma rays was different from Banner and the Hulk, more aggressive. It actually killed people. Dr. Clive, long dead, had actually discovered a cure for Frye’s condition and successfully treated him. But Frye, now old and weak, and still bullied by the townspeople, wants to have the power again. Discovering Clive’s laboratory, David finds a machine that is capable of harnessing gamma radiation from the sun. In order for Clive’s cure to work, David must take it and bombard himself with gamma radiation from the machine. Before he can continue, though, Frye knocks him unconscious and straps himself to the machine, exposing himself to the gamma rays and unleashing the dangerous creature from the past. After a murderous rampage through town, David is able to subdue Frye and get him back to the machine to cure him. Sensing what David is trying to do, Frye transforms again and destroys the last vial of Clive’s cure. Distraught by the loss of a cure for his condition, David changes into the Hulk and the two creatures fight. But David’s Hulk is more powerful and he is able to beat Frye, who is eventually shot dead by the town sheriff. Meant as an homage to the classic Universal Monsters films of the 1940s and 1950s, Joe used the opportunity to score THE FIRST in the style of those films. THE INCREDIBLE HULK was a surprisingly popular television show that ran for five seasons on CBS, from 1978 to 1982 and returning again in the late 1980’s, in three more television films. Taking a page from Victor Hugo’s LES MISERABLES, the show chronicled the journey of scientist David Bruce Banner, wrongly accused of the murder of an associate in a lab explosion and doggedly pursued across the country by tabloid journalist Jack McGee and law enforcement, as he struggled to find some way to both prove his innocence and cure himself of the radiation-inspired accident that forced him to turn into the Hulk when provoked. Accompanying Banner on his travels was the music of veteran composer Joe Harnell, in particular, his Lonely Man theme, performed on solo piano, which would play out at the end of each episode as Banner, once again misunderstood and pushed aside by society despite his compassionate efforts to help his fellow Man, must take to the road and move on to the next town. Part of 2006’s After Dark Horror Film Festival, DARK RIDE tells the story of a group of six friends on a road trip who have chosen to stop at an old amusement park attraction named Dark Ride. Unknown to them, Jonah, an escaped mental patient has also returned to the park, after having been incarcerated for brutally murdering two teenage girls a decade past. As they bring Dark Ride back to life and board the ride, they are completely unaware of the deadly plans Jonah has in mind for them. Kostas Christides was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. He started his musical studies when he was six years old. Kostas graduated from the London College of Music, where he studied Piano, Composition and Orchestration and also received his Masters degree in Composition. He is also a graduate of the University Of Southern California’s Advanced Studies Program in Scoring For Motion Picture And Television. Kostas has numerous credits to his name as a composer of original scores for films such as PERKINS 14, THE DRONE VIRUS, 29 REASONS TO RUN, EDUART and DARK RIDE. He has also had a successful career as an orchestrator on films such as THE HURRICANE, WONDER BOYS, SWORDFISH, THE SHIPPING NEWS, THE CORE, THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, SPIDER-MAN 3, UNTRACEABLE and TRAVELING.
