  1. sorry to double post but I managed to track down some video game rips of some of the tracks from the old NES TOD video game... (ie: barely polyphonic midi)

    One of the things I noticed was that they seem to follow, pretty closely, to the actual cues...as if whoever had them either had the sheet music or a recording (probably sheet music).

    Well, its interesting that "Down the Snowbank" has a much different opening than the one we're use to... and without sheet music this is simply speculation, but perhaps this is the original opening to "Down the Snowbank"?

    Looking at the sheetmusic we have, we have from measure 5 on... meaning only about 4 measures are missing, and counting off and keeping time, it's 5 measures long... but given the fact that perhaps there's a meter change... that could account for it. Say what would normally be the first two measures were simply one measure... perhaps performed differently to fit the film, and then into the actual tempo and beat...

    I REALLY think this is it!

    Assuming this isn't breaking any rules here's the file:

    Down the Snowbank

    (Its only the first few moments of the file. The rest (starting with measure 5) repeats over and over)

    If anyone happens to find or have the midi of this, we could then extract the parts and at least create a SOMEWHAT accurate reproduction... I think some of the instrumentation is obvious...

  2. the water insert...11m1, schoober, is there a way you can check your work. The horns especially. I know the "fanfare" that comes in near the end is like a fifth off which leads me to believe that the horn line is written in the score at...is it concert pitch? either way it's the wrong pitch... Its a great job...

    I wish we had more of the midis though and not the mp3s cause I'd fix them and re-post both (hint hint) lol

  3. So I dunno how much talk there's been on the sanskrit sacrifice area of the film but I've been trying to wrap my mind around it.

    I did a quick edit of the film based on the notes in "Sanskrit Sacrifice [7m1]" which you can see here:

    I was, however, watching the film again comparing it to the "Sacrifice Sweetener [7m1a]" and I was trying to follow along with this and the film and found that it almost exactly fits the film... not completely... but if you follow the times it gives at the top, it fits pretty well... so I'm thinking that perhaps by this point in time, the sequence had been re-edited, and Williams cue 7m1 was being reworked to fit the film. The sweetener was to go over it and expand it a bit.

    Then the "More Sacrifice [7m2]" comes into play replacing a bit of the ending. I'm working on some editing and I'll let you know if I find anything furher.

  4. Only having just recently been pulled back into this, I thought I'd throw my two cents in.

    I've been trying to study the score since I got it saturday and so far, I'm overwhelmed. It's so much! And I mean that in the sense that... when I made my set...I had 12 tracks, and already had 14 tracks of alternates lol!

    Anyway, I wanted to post a video to youtube showing a short clip of where I think "Exchange of Glances" goes... if you look, it's slate number is 3m2b...which seems to imply it's an insert... my thought is perhaps 3m2a was composed first... and latter they wondered if the shot where the maharajah looks to his emissary should have music, so williams wrote something that ended up not being used.

    Someone had already made a synth of it, but I sped it up to sync with the beat of the music and the cut of the film (allowing for changes in the performance).

    I also plan to post a video showing the original Sacrifice sequence based on williams own notes in the score.

  5. If it helps at all or if anyone is interested, for Jurassic Park Legacy, I'm gearing up to start doing a pod cast on the score to Jurassic Park which is why it was kinda ironic when I saw this.

    I just finished a complete score edit where I used the conductors score to create synth representations of the missing music or to help the dvd rip sound better.

    I'll post my findings sometime if anyone is interested, but keep an eye out on youtube, I'm gonna be posting (if they don't try to bogusly take it down) there

    Latter pod casts will be about the other two films, but lacking as much information as I have from Jurassic Park, they may not be as exciting or interesting.

  6. It fits MOST of the scene. It does not fit after the raptor lands on the walkway and ellie turns the corner.

    After that cut there is about 6 seconds cut of the raptor climbing the stairs and on ellie's heels. If you read the original script, you can see what I'm talking about.

    Then if you bring it back in at the shot of ellie going up the stairs, closing the door, it'll fit.

    The finale to "Hungry Raptor" is also not used.

    You do hear in this "Making of" Featurette the complete cue of "The Entrance of Mr. Hammond [2m1]" however.

    The complete "T-rex Chase" is not used in the film. About 6 seconds are cut for when Malcolm jokes about it being on the tour, and the strings chord ending is cut as well since the music is brought in earlier than it was suppose to.

    None of the rest of this music your asking about is Williams and none of it was for the film. It was probably just music they had sitting around that was now out of copyright that they could just pluck and sit into the program to fill in the holes. I've never managed to figure out what it is and I don't think it's in the credits.

  7. cant say I care enough about it to make my only video post be about a minute long and nothing but sounds... I care not enough to make it into an elaborate video either since it's something so incidental. But I thought it might bring up at least an interesting topic on the use of clips such as these... in modern music... it was just never something I thought about doing... but I suppose from a composer like Mark Snow's stand point, all he really wants is that "sound" and rather than fully orchestrate it out and perform it himself as he'd have to, he'd rather just use that.

    or if you can do that... because its so small...

  10. So it's been a while since Ive been here but I coudn't think of any other forum that might find this interesting.

    I've been watching the X Files lately and I'm in about the middle of Season 3 on an episode called "Oubliette," when I noticed something in Mark Snow's music...

    This... obviously 90's instrumental flourish... a sort of... orchestral hit.

    Anyway, it's used over and over again...and strangely enough, I've been listening to Jurassic Park a lot lately... and I swear... this must be sampled from Jurassic Park.

    The cue itself is called "T-Rex to the Rescue (13m1-14m1)." It's only a few seconds in... and I've compared the two and the pitch is identical... and there is a solo horn that continues to play after the hit, and even that is intact lol...

    Its just kinda funny becuase I wonder, how prolific is this practice? And do they have to get special liscence to do it?

    Just curious if anyone knew...

  11. supposedly... but not knowing what was recorded for the film its hard to say... especially since the end of the end credits intro and intro to the thematic material after words couldn't be predicted during TPM recording... I'd guess that they would have recorded a new intro for Episode II and III...

  12. speeding up your voice isn't sound design... its what the chipmunks are... lol

    Although I admit I like the voice as used... but it still... in a deep dark place of my soul, makes me cringe..

    I toyed aroudn with slowing it donw... if you slow down him talking to 1.6 to 1.8 times, you will get the original ben burtt voice... although othertimes I had to go as far as 2.1...

  13. I've compared a few versions of Main Title and there are definately at least two takes. The UE and the Album have two very distinct takes if I recall right. I know that when I first started redoing my Episode I edit, I was trying to pay close attention to the two and found that the build back into the title after the B section is obviously different.

    And if I recall, the film version isn't either of them...

    but I think GGTUK I talking about the CREDITS music... not the TITLE music...

    He's talking about after the iris in to the credits... that 30 second filler before it goes into theme music... he found an alternate take... he had sent it to me and it does indeed sound different. There is a more pronounced bang of the timpani in the first "hit"

  14. Ironically I quote this movie often buy no one catches it...

    "Just you ...and me...and a cup of tea!" lol...

    I miss this movie... I remember as a child thinking it was dark near the end... when their home was transformed and they were homeless... good cinema ...

    The score I don't quite recall... but If I saw it in a store, I might buy it heh
