  1. It'd be a shame that Thomas Newman wouldn't be able to score.

Well I admire Thomas Newman for his work....he should definitely stay away from James Bond. We'd probably get something like The Adjustment Bureau if were to do a Bond film. The fact is, Newman is pretty weak with his action music. Bond just needs David Arnold again :)

  2. Alright, I'm really new to these forums. But in my short time here I have noticed a lot of people who compose music on these forums.

Over at the Filmtracks Scoreboard, I've been hosting a composers challenge for quite a while now. A new one is starting up right now, and I was wondering if anyone was interested.

Here are the instructions for this challenge:

Regular updates will be posted on the Filmtracks Scoreboard and on the blog. I know I'm new and all, but if anyone was the least bit interested in having a great composing experience, you could give the challenge a try :P

Hoping to hear some of your work!

  3. I saw Munich in the theater, yea. Only listened to that OST once as well.

You only listened to Munich once? :o

I loved that score. It was quite a powerful Williams score and one of my favourites of that year. It captured some of the gravity of Schindler's List (although not as powerful) and turned out to be a great score. 2005 was a stellar year for the maestro. Memoirs of a Geisha, Munich and Star Wars III were fantastic scores!!!! I even appreciate War of the Worlds to some degree.

Tintin is a fantastic score and one of the favourite of the decade! But I've been fond of all of Williams scores in the 00's. However, I prefer the 3 Potter scores and the SW prequels over Tintin. While I adore AI (fantastic score!), I think I might have to put Tintin a bit above that.....

I respect Minority Report and War of the Worlds because they're intelligent scores and I completely understand what Williams was going for. It may not have translated as well as it could have on album, but they had moments and I appreciate them. Indy 4 had moments, but Tintin surpasses it greatly. I've got to say that Tintin is one of the best Williams scores of the decade.

  4. Hans Zimmer was supposed to compose the score without seeing the film for Inception due to Nolan's request (he didn't want anybody to really see the full film? not sure...). He then worked with the sound guys to synchronize the BOOOMs in accordance with the different levels of the dream. The result? Not really a great score.

On the other hand, Zimmer wrote hours of music for The Thin Red Line prior to viewing the film I believe. The end result? A poetic score of great beauty, one of my favourites from the man.

Do I agree with this method? Nope. While I'm ok with composers composing themes based off the script alone, or developing the general sound and atmosphere of the score. But to compose action cues/chase music and such prior to the film just makes it then becomes stock music. Thats why we have temp music for.

  5. Thanks guys for the positieve reactions..!

Maybe I'll give it another shot in a few days. I was actually aiming for a more heroic arrangement, but instead I opted for a somewhat jazzy approach. I still want that 'Raiders March'-feel for a Tintin's Theme arrangement, so I hope to start working on it soon.

But of course, I'm so much more interested in what a better composer comes up with (really hope some of you guys have begun composing as well..!)

Your arrangement was great. And I really like the idea, I think I might give it a shot too. Just as soon as I get the time :D

  6. Erik's show was great! Like many others, I LOVED Sir Francis and the Unicorn. The sheer power of the Unicorn theme brought me back to the sensation I felt when I first heard the Ark theme in all its glory! And then theres that action motif I've had my eye on ever since I first heard it first in the samples. Its great to hear it in its full form!

Its official my friends...Williams is back :D
