  1. Actually I was waiting for Neil to repond, since he tried to make me look like a moron with this: "...Eric, you're not getting it. I'll spell it out since you are having trouble grasping this concept. Lifetime Achievement Awards are given when the academy says, "Whoops, how could we overlook this guy and not give him any Oscars?..."
  2. So? I listed 5 off the top of my head, that pretty much dispells the belief it's given only to people who never won, wouldn't you say?
  3. x1000 Neil Sidney Poitier Robert Redford Henry Fonda Sophia Loren James Stewart Off the top of my head. All Oscar WINNERS, fully appreciated during the peak of their careers, but yet somehow also won Lifetime Achievement Awards.
  4. You don't have to spell it out for me, because you're wrong. Lifetime Achievement Awards are not always given to people who never got an Oscar. It is given to lifetime achievement, and whether the recipient ever won an award previously has nothing to do with it.
  5. So to the point, you think Morricone is a better film composer than Williams?
  6. Wow, I am surprised a bit at the responses. So just curious, why aren't you all hanging out over at enniomorricone.com?
  7. I didn't ask if he deserved the award. I asked if he deserved it over John Williams. If the award is used to recognize one who never got awarded, than yes. But if it is based on who's the better composer, then nope, sorry. I guess it won't matter though, because JW will eventually get his. I just hope it's not posthumously.
  8. They talk about the secrecy of the sealed envelopes, that only 1 person knows the results before it is opened... So how is it that the orchestra is ready to play the theme music for each winner within a 1/2 second of the announcement?
  9. In all seriousness, do you think Santaolalla is a bit embarrased because he knows he's not doing much to earn these awards, and he is accepting the Oscar in front of hundreds of thousands of musicians around the world who are in disbelief? Or... do you think he is totally oblivious to the criticism because he trully thinks he is the best?
  10. There is some good news, and it has nothing to do with car insurance... According to IMDB, he has no feature films until 2009. But the damage is already done. Santoewhatever-his-name-is now owns more Oscars than Bernard Hermann... and Jerry Goldsmith... and many many other far superior musicians.
  11. 'nuff said. Not to mention the amazing body of work and influence Morricone has had. 400 films ain't chickenshit, you know. I'm confused. A guy who has won 5 Oscars does NOT deserve the lifetime achievement award over a guy with zero Oscars? Morricone may have more films, but I bet you JW has composed 2x as much music.
  12. WHO are the voters? What are they thinking? Are there any professional musicians on the Academy??
  13. Congrats to Morricone, only the 2nd composer to get one of these. I love his work as much as the next guy, but he is half the composer JW is. To be honest, I consider this to be (yet another) snub, even though Morricone is excellent in his own right.
  14. Thanks! Is there supposed to be video? I am only getting audio. Also, I only count 3 in that zip folder. There's supposed to be 4?
  15. Please do! I must have missed them when they were originally on.
  16. It plays the orchestral background through the system's speakers as the piano plays the lead melody live and the keys move.
  17. But I don't have a conductor's score (is there a Signature Edition for this?). All I have is the Herb Spencer manuscript, and it's very difficult to make out. Any suggestions? Does anyone have a SE for the main title?
  18. There's one for John Williams, apparently. PianoDisc
  19. But it's not just octaves. There are inner notes that make it akward. Again, it's not exactly Godowsky, but it's harder than the so-called "transcriptions" which are not accurate.
  20. but I doubt he would play the over the moon, it is not really a hard part for a studio pianist (it sounds much harder). Actually pi, it is a tad bit harder than one may think. I transcribed it a while back and unlike the published version from Hal Leonard which has the RH staying within the range of a 6th, the actual soundtrack version has the RH spanning an octave, which sets up an akward position where the RH 1 and 2 fingers are bunched up minor 2nd C# and D while pinky plays an octave higher on C#. It's nothing that a concert pianist couldn't play, but it does take quite a bit of practice (to play gracefully), unlike the supposedly accurate Hal Leonard version which fits the hands much more comfortably.
  21. Oh there's some freakishly great writing in HP, but I was referring to the Hedwig's Theme, which is decent but no where near the level of other JW themes.
  22. I played tthe ones I felt they'd recognize the most: Star Wars (both overture and Darth Vader), Jaws, Indiiana Jones, Jurassic Park, E.T., and Harry Potter which of course turned out to be their favorite much to my dismay.
