  1. FYI, I ran across the following on another board:

"In case you're interested, the the only CD with songs from the United Artists / Reader's Digest 1973 musical version of TOM SAWYER is available on amazon.com. It is not the soundtrack, which is not available on CD, even though it boasts one of the best non-Disney scores by the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) and marvelous arrangements by John Williams.

This album is a low-budget studio version of the score with narration by Early Williams, very likely recorded in Nashville. It was originally released by Golden Records. It is pleasant enough to listen to, though nowhere near as lavish as the soundtrack."

Here's the link to the Amazon page for the CD! Rather affordable.

  2. I conduct forensic analyses of audio (and some video) recordings for criminal investigations, civil matters, administrative matters, etc. I have headphones on all day, listening to recordings of individuals in the act of committing a crime, confessing to a crime, covertly recording their estranged spouse... you name it. Invariably, it's people at their worst.

The most unfortunate aspect of the job is that I don't have the luxury of listening to Williams' music since I have to concentrate on what I'm listening to.

  3. The piece I mean could well be Williams' Amazing Stories theme which I haven't heard before and hence didn't recognize.

From your description, it definitely sounds like the Amazing Stories theme. Click here then select one of the formats for Track 1. It's also possible that it's "The Landing" from the Amazing Stories episode "The Mission" (also featured on this disc).

And no, Joel McNeely didn't compose it, he merely conducted this particular recording.

    Good luck!

  4. Well that's not a bad Idea, but I'd rather have one from Disneyland. There's a lot of great movie rides with great music from Star Wars, and Indiana Jones among others. But if they do make this cd, I really want the "Soarin' over California" theme to be on there. Im not a big fan of Jerry Goldsmith, but this theme is amazing. So if you do go to Disneyland and California Adventure (where the ride is located) then I recommend you go on this ride.

An official CD for Disney's California Adventure was released a while back. It includes the full score for the "Soarin' Over California" ride (~4:40) as well as an outstanding selection by Bruce Broughton for "Seasons of the Vine."

The full track listing can be found here.

The cheapest way to buy it is from the park; however, you can call Disneyland DelivEars at (800) 760-3566 to order the CD. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny for it, especially for shipping. IIRC I paid around $28 including shipping.

Amazon is also selling the Japanese import version of it here, but it's $37.99 plus shipping!!

  5. This album was also released on cassette in the States (with a different cover) and on a RARE CD in Japan. The performance is pretty solid, but it sounds as if a smaller ensemble was utilized than in the other recorded performances of the fanfare.

On a personal note, this collection is a guilty pleasure, full of ultra 80s pop songs. Some of the intrumental highlights include Quincy Jones' gymnastics theme (later redone as a vocal with Barry White on Jones' "Jook Joint" release) and Bill Conti's power sports theme (an obvious precursor to his "American Gladiators" theme).

  6. My pleasure! :)

Next to the music of John Williams, music composed specifically for the Olympics and Olympic-related media is my greatest interest. Unfortunately, a great deal of this music is unreleased or available only on private promotional releases which are next to impossible to find.

BTW, I cannot find the name of the composer of 1994 CBS fanfare. I could have sworn that I had saved the reference but so far, I've come up empty-handed.

  7. http://soundamerica.com/sounds/themes/Misc...sc/olympic2.wav

There wasn't any info for this cue but it sounds like JW's work.

Is this the theme for the Special Olympics?

Is this even JW? Any info would be much appreciated!

This is actually a track titled "Entrance of the Nations" from the 1985 film 16 Days of Glory, composed by Lee Holdridge. The soundtrack has been issued several times on CD, most recently on the Laserlight label (Deutsche Grammaphone previously). A highly recommended CD!

  8. They are actually re-recordings.  Someone arranged and conducted these 2 pieces in a suite-like manner to fit the ride.  And whoever did it did a great job IMO.   All the transitions flow and are faithful in tempos and performance to the originals.

Richard Bellis arranged and conducted these recordings, as well as composed original music heard here and there throughout the attractions. Some of his music is included on the 2 tracks on the Disneyland Official Album.

Bellis has contributed a great deal of music to the various Disney theme parks around the world and is probably most widely known for his Emmy-award winning score for Stephen King's IT. Check out his webpage at www.richardbellis.com. He's very gracious and quick to respond to emails.
