to each other's work. Do composers listen to the work of other composers. Does Danny Elfman, JNH, Thomas Newman or Ghiacchino run out and get Williams' new score when it comes out? Does John Williams listen to their work? Does Williams have a score collection that would shame everyone on this board?

Well, they're busy people - they proably wont exactly rush out to buy a new Williams score. But they will definetely show interest in other scores, for sure.

The major composers probably hear each other through watching films. I doubt they buy the soundtrack CDs.

The major composers are all members of the musicians guild and the academy, so thet would get complimentary scores during awards season, wouldn't they?

They're very busy, but I would hope that they listen to each other's just because they like listening to film scores

Zimmer does. He's the only one I see often talking about other composer's scores. Except for him, the only people who seem to have opinions on current scores are either the young composers getting started in the biz, or some of the old ones in semi retirement. They sometimes talk about new stuff (Elmer Bernstein spoke about new scores all the time). David Shire also talks about new scores from time to time, but he isn't exactly the highest profile film composer at the moment.

Giacchino strikes me as the type to listen to other scores. JNH too. Not Williams, Horner or Elfman. I think the newer composers and the MV gang listen to new scores (though less and less with time- Gregson-Williams used to talk about new scores, but when he came into his own, he kinda stopped). A lot of this is based on circumstancial, intuitional, and otherwise hokey evidence.

Doesn't Williams bows down to the likes of Herrmann? I believe that's what he tells the interviewers. Of course, that's not so hard to do, everybody bows down to Herrmann.

Williams bows to no one!

Of course he does, you just don't know who they are. ;)

He's referred to the Binary Sunset as his homage to "Old man Korngold"... so clearly he has a great deal of respect for Korngold!

I meant Williams is under no one. He is the best, at least to me.
