  1. The graph in that CNBC article showing the box office grosses for the films is a visual depiction of decline and failure. After the ANH re-hash that was Episode 7, an original and enthralling Episode 8 could have made as much. Instead, it crapped on Luke Skywalker and broke the fandom. The second spin-off film should have made as much as the first. Instead, it lost a fortune. Disney/Lucasfilm are in dire straights with Star Wars. Taking into account only at the facts, how can anyone say otherwise? Kathleen Kennedy's legacy is dependent on the reception of Episode 9. If it's a financial failure, expect massive changes at Lucasfilm.
  2. My mistake; it was @John that linked it. At least your meme was humorous, albeit incorrect.
  3. What? What was the point of linking an unsubstantial article... and then posting a meme saying I was "WRONG" when I was, in fact, "RIGHT"? Based on Solo utter failure and the online 'vibe', I would say that the current state of Disney Star Wars is disastrous. If JJ can't pull one of the best Star Wars films out of his ass, the entire trilogy will be a waste of time, money, and emotional investment for most of the fans. That's the way they want you to think.
  4. @The Illustrious Jerry That CNBC article was completely devoid of revenue figures proving that Disney has recouped its investment in Lucasfilm. It centered around one guy just saying "Disney has more than made back it's original investment." That is not proof.
  5. The article's writer says that "Disney has recouped its investment" but fails to mention... ... the specific production and marketing costs of each film. ... the revenue figures from the "dozens of other Star Wars revenue streams" (merchandise sales figures, licensing agreements, other forms of media, etc.) ... the massive cost of the "two Star Wars Lands under construction". ... that Disney doesn't receive all of the revenue from box office receipts. When all is said and done, it's safe to say they received around 60% of it. That article did not prove that Disney has recouped its investment in Lucasfilm. Mr. Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore, said that "Solo still made a lot of money," and that "By any other measure Solo was a success, but in the realm of 'Star Wars' anything less than a grand slam home run is seen as a disappointment. So [that film] was held to a higher standard, no question, but that's because of how well the films have done even before Disney." Mr. Dergarabedian is a spin doctor. Solo did not make "a lot of money". THE FILM LOST $200 MILLION DOLLARS. By any measure that matters, this is "seen as a disappointment". Solo's financial failure was an utter embarrassment for Kathleen Kennedy, who recently received a contract extension from Bob Iger... who took the blame for Solo's failure, citing "too much, too soon". Though he must be aware that the film's disastrous cinematic run (and financial decline with the other films*) is indicative of a major problem that fans and the general public have with what Disney Star Wars has turned out to be. I never said that "Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm has been a total disaster on all fronts". It's their handling of Star Wars that has resulted in "total disaster" regarding public interest in the franchise. * TLJ made 1/3 less at the box office than TFA. Solo made 2/3 less than Rogue One, which made 1/2 that of TFA.
  6. I attended two (superb) Royal Philharmonic concerts at the RAH last year. Ceiling-mounted speakers were utilized at the second one... distractingly so. It sounded like a second orchestra - very detached. Granted the event was a "Space Spectacular" with lighting and fire effects, but they overdid the sound from the speakers on every piece. 🙁 Regarding Raiders' March as an encore, I called it, actually.
  7. Did you watch Star Wars Theory's video? Time travel is now 'a thing' in Star Wars. Why would Supreme Leader Snoke, his Dwartii/Mustafar ring, the Dark Side Sculptor, and the World Between Worlds have been introduced if not to be utilized in final film of the Saga? Considering the MAJOR effects of TLJ backlash, Ep. 9 essentially retconning Ep.8 - with Snoke and Luke Skywalker (and possibly Han Solo) returning in the flesh - would be just the bold move Disney needs to re-energize the franchise... and make a shit ton of money.* Honestly, I don't see how they do it otherwise. (Bringing back Lando and Force ghost Luke will not be enough.) This theory would also explain why Kathleen Kennedy was given a contract extension: After her troubles as President of Lucasfilm**, Bob Iger knows new leadership is needed. But he (and Hollywood, in general) wants her to leave a high note. Allowing JJ to pull out all the stops - by using 'Snoke time manipulation' - would do the trick. * comic book and Star Wars: Rebels Blu-ray sales would sky-rocket ** firing/replacing multiple directors... often deep into production, Solo's massive financial loss, TLJ breaking the fandom, allowing employees to bad-mouth fans, etc.
  8. This 'Snoke time manipulation' theory would explain why JJ Abrams is re-purposing cutting room floor footage of Carrie Fisher for Episode 9, which could begin during the events of The Force Awakens... with the story deviating from what happened in TLJ. This 'time travel fail-safe' introduced in Star Wars: Rebels allows them an out from the currently-unfolding disaster they find themselves in. The fans (and Disney shareholders) can only hope they will be so bold.
  9. No one's really gone. - Luke Skywalker Failure, the greatest teacher is. - Yoda I cannot be beaten. - Snoke Watch this video from one of Youtube's most respected Star Wars channels: If Snoke can bring himself - and hopefully Luke Skywalker - back using time manipulation (perhaps rendering The Last Jedi null and void), it's possible that the Sequel Trilogy can be saved... and the fandom will reunite... mostly. If not, Rian Johnson is the ultimate troll.
  10. No one's really gone. - Luke Skywalker I won't give up that easily, guys. 😉 The Force Is Female ... THE FORCE KILLED LUKE ... Women killed Luke Skywalker
  11. The Last Jedi: In leaving Ahch-To abruptly, Rey split Anakin's lightsaber split Snoke got split Snoke's star destroyer got split. The fandom split
  12. And just as easily as you say that, I will say that George Lucas knew that Luke would survive and be the one - or, at the very least, the catalyst to defeat the Sith... and that the Rebellion would eventually defeat the Empire. The fact that George Lucas had to leave LFL on unpleasant terms - after initially staying on as a creative consultant but having his sequel treatments thrown in the garbage - should be proof enough that the current holders are on a selfish mission... but still are 'making it up as they go'. Which of my points are silly? Taking the time to name-call makes you look pathetic. You don't think I understand TLJ better than most... or you? There's probably not too many people in the world that understand the movie better than me, having only seen the movie once and not read its novelization. Not yet. Thank you for admitting your regret. You are wrong, though. ... is the state of Star Wars at the moment. I understand Luke made a self-sacrifice. But the events of the film imply that the Resistance would have gotten away without his 'appearance'... because Rey and Chewie helped them escape though a back corridor. And of course, Rose's intervention didn't help their cause - quite the opposite. This was weak and lazy writing - not fulfilling. I never called you lesser/deluded fans. I simply stated that those who like TLJ were satisfied by less or that, going in, your expectations were lower. I never conveyed my "subjective opinion as an objective unalterable fact" - just theories and opinions based on actual events during the last few years. My "substantial facts" are that Star Wars movie ticket and merchandise sales are down and for the first time ever Star Wars film just lost money... a lot of it. The fan consensus may not be "clear", but a lot of "bitter and bruised" people that think that "Star Wars was in the shitter". With Disney overseeing and marketing, LFL - under the presidency of Kathleen Kennedy, are producing offering a creative product, so "objective assessment" is impossible. Many feel these films are lazy and deliberately divisive... in their subjective opinion, of course. For the disenchanted, "the last line of defense" will be to simply share/corroborate their thoughts online... and not buy Star Wars stuff until they feel Disney/LFL deserves their business. The hope by these fans is that the decline in revenue will result in a positive change for the franchise moving forward. That's all they can do. This thread probably wouldn't exist had I not joined the conversation. Calling me a troll does you or your 'side' absolutely no good. If anything, it discredits it. I have every right to be "bitter" and "enraged" after TLJ (film and film-makers) crapped on Star Wars. While 'feeling sorry for me', feel sorry for the millions of other disenchanted Star Wars fans.... because that will improve things! After the fan backlash, LFL employees have "retaliated" and "chipped away [their] veneer to reveal something that was there before all of this, something deeply disturbing and sad." I'm pleased to know that you can agree on several issues I've raised. But if my posts now "infuriate" you, it might be because I have enlightened you on how poor of a film TLJ really is... and you are struggling to come to terms with this fact. If not, just don't read my posts and get on with your life. I am the only one taking the time to respond to most substantive posts defending or praising Disney's handling of Star Wars. But I admit, my repetition is a bit long in the tooth. Though if I come across as "a bit fanatical", it's because I am a Star Wars fan, and hate to see the franchise disrespected and the fans divided and distraught. How does my "referencing of outside sources and what other fans think" weaken my arguments? I sure that most of the fans would have liked an Abrams TLJ more. The conclusion of LOTR saw the villain (Sauron) and leach (Gollum) defeated by good. The same will happen with the current 'keepers' of Star Wars. The darkest hour is just before the dawn.
  13. 50% of Star Wars fans will skip Episode 9 in the theaters... in order to make their point: they strongly dislike Disney/Lucasfilm's handling of the franchise and don't appreciate being insulted or dehumanized after expressing disappointment. Solo made 65% less than Rogue One, so why is my prediction "absurd and extremely stupid"? We are engaging in civil debate, @Arpy. Do not call me a troll again. Any further uses of this word towards me will result in me ignoring your posts. That long list of ridiculous events in the TLJ were "addressed" - but not excused... and are major issues to many fans. Add in Lucasfilm's subsequent behavior, and the fans are divided. The fact that there were so many un-StarWarsy things in TLJ supports my theory that Rian Johnson knew he was making a divisive film... oh, and the fact that he stated on camera that he likes making movies in which "half the audience will walk out of the movie saying its the worst movie they've ever seen". Luke died without having left the island... without the audience being told why he gave up after making one mistake. And considering that the Finn's self-sacrifice attempt was foiled by Rose, Luke wouldn't have needed to use his Force-projection powers with the First Order's door-destroying weapon destroyed. The specific way these events transpired makes it very clear that Johnson was screwing with the audience. Luke Skywalker died by suicide. What an utter disgrace to his character by Rian Johnson, who shouldn't be let within 100 miles of any future Star Wars productions, much less be given a trilogy. Rian Johnson publicly admitting to mocking a Star Wars fan and Youtuber. This just adds fuel to the boycott fire. When Luke threw away his lightsaber in front of the Emperor, it was to proclaim to him that he had become a Jedi. He knew he stood no chance at defeating the Emperor, so indeed, his actions then were "defiance and a refusal to fight." What distinguishes this event from the lightsaber tossing in TLJ is how it happened. After looking longingly at the girl who had presented him his original lightsaber, he proceeded to toss it over his shoulder - over a cliff - and walk by her without a single word. If Luke was to refuse the lightsaber, he could have simply tossed the lightsaber aside or at her feet... or just given it back to her without a word. Playing that dramatic moment as comedy was extremely off-putting and aggressively disrespectful of the fans' expectations. ... even though Finn and Poe are not 'white'. Generally speaking, fans do not want "SJW stuff" or on-the-nose political/social statements in Star Wars, especially not in the feature films. But Kathleen Kennedy & Co. just couldn't resist, could they? I didn't say I disliked Luke statement that "the Jedi must end". I merely supposed that it was a reason I believed that Rian Johnson knew he was making a divisive film. What I do have an issue with is Luke Skywalker making the claim that "The legacy of the Jedi is failure." As Obi-Wan told Luke, "For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire." The Empire controlled the galaxy for 25 years before the Rebellion and a Jedi Knight defeated it. Then 30 years later, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker made one mistake with Ben, who then joined the First Order. Luke then chose to give up. That's not exactly a 'legacy of failure', is it? With the Prequel Trilogy, George Lucas had a vision and a specific story to tell. The movies simply weren't made well. But his heart was in the right place... and Star Wars was his creation. In general, the Disney SW movies are superior from a production-value standpoint, but are still horribly written and divisive. Those in charge have an agenda... and it's not to make movies that most fans (and the general public) will enjoy. "You can't please everyone." With Disney's resources and the best talent in the world within their reach, they could please the vast majority. But clearly, those in charge aren't trying to do this... and don't seem to care that a significant segment of the fans... no longer care to support them. Johnson publicly concurred with the researcher in trying to attribute the backlash after TLJ to Russian bots. Pathetic attempt to change the narrative... a slight change of pace from calling people "trolls", "manbabies", and "assholes". Spoiled brat Kylo: Arguing with Snoke regarding his abilities and Rey, smashing his helmet in the elevator, continuing to ask Rey to join him when she came to turn him, using the Force to demean Commander Hux, and his anger turned to foolishness after failing to kill Luke... twice Correct, a lightsaber battle isn't required. But no one asked for "the same tired formula". Many capable writer could flesh-out a superb Episode 8... with all main events of TLJ still occurring. Rian Johnson just dropped the ball with a film that is simultaneously busy and lazy. The battle with the guards was pretty cool on first viewing, but again, why was Force-powerful Klyo so strained during the fight? And the digital removal of the dagger from the guard (that could have easily killed Rey) is just embarrassing from a choreography/editing standpoint. The problem have is that Luke Skywalker was written to say 'he came to the island to die'... and then died there by suicide. I understand these movies far better than most - and that includes you. My prediction is at least 50% of fans will deliberately skip its theatrical run in a show of force. Many of the general audience will have been turned-off by TLJ and will simply choose to attend other movies instead. Star Wars fan: a person interested in any Star Wars stories, characters, or films 50% is just an estimate. We'll see what happens with Episode 9's box office pull. I'll be surprised if any of these things* don't happen but the film makes $1B worldwide (~$600M after the theaters take their cut). * Kathleen Kennedy (and her story group) step-away from Lucasfilm (or are fired), Rian Johnson's trilogy is announced to be cancelled, apologies for the insults are officially issued
  14. Nothing of what you wrote here matters to me or is relevant to this discussion. Though, it's obvious that Kathleen Kennedy is attempting to 'exploit' Star Wars. Really? 'Not being the first time that Star Wars films have been divisive' is not a reason that I can't state the fact that the films are divisive now. But just being divisive this is not "the reason [the fans say] there's something wrong with the Disney films". They are divisive because many fans classify them as pathetic attempts at Star Wars movies: TFA was a rehash of ANH featuring a Mary Sue. Rogue One was just okay... and would not have been nearly as much of a success without the inclusion of Darth Vader. TLJ was a designed to make fans divided and upset. And Solo? Unnecessary and very few people wanted it. So why was the movie made... twice? So many director firings by LFL president Kathleen Kennedy. These things have left an impression on many fans... who feel that films and overall direction of the franchise simply SUCKS. Trust me, the boycott will be in full force come Episode 9. 1. Luke Skywalker threw his old lightsaber over the cliff (behind his back) without saying a word to his visitor, "the Jedi must end", forced feminism, in-your-face SJW Rose Tico, Canto Bight was a waste of time, Snoke gets killed by Kylo after saying he could "not be betrayed", Rey's character advances little to none... and still no explanation of why the Force 'awakened' in her and why she was Kylo's "equal in the Light", Captain Phasma 'dies' again, the Resistance plan was terrible, Leia Poppins (Force power not addressed in the film), Kylo kept his mask off and still acted like a spoiled brat, no light-saber battle, why did Kylo have trouble with the guardsmen?, Luke died without having left the island. 2. 'Subverting expectations' could have been interesting. Instead, Rian Johnson dropped the ball BIG TIME. He knew what he was doing. To think he didn't would be foolish. 3. It's his movie. He has every right to be proud of it. Is he proud of what it's done to the fandom? Lucas didn't go out if his way to address detractors. But Rian Johnson does: daily on Twitter, saying up to half of the backlash could be Russian trolls. Just pathetic excuses and behavior from a very small person. If Episode 9 is not as successful as they were expecting, Disney will take appropriate action. From the disenchanted fans perspective, this should result in new leadership and the cancellation of Rian Johnson trilogy. It also will show them that largely dismissing the fan backlash was a huge mistake. After 69 pages, I don't know why you are still in denial about the reality of the state of Star Wars. But on the surface, you seem to understand as much as Disney. Only you know what you truly think. But actions speak louder than thoughts... and words. If receiving concerns or complaints about a product or service, any capable business person would tell their customers that they appreciate the customers' business and that you have taken their thoughts and opinions under consideration... and that you can't wait to show them your (or the company's) next product or service. Accusing any of your customers of racism, sexism, and calling them manbabies or trolls is never acceptable - period. But Rian Johnson & Co. haved doubled-down. And after he was fired, Chuck Wendig admitted that LFL "supported" him in his offensive Tweets. This is crazy beyond belief. Define "Episode 9 being successful". Being #1 per week is irrelevant. It's the overall gross that counts. Are you serious? His usage of "manbabies" is enough to call him unprofessional. He lowers himself regularly on Twitter... and recently deleted thousands of Tweets "just to be safe" after James Gunn's firing. That conversation only explains his usage of "troll". FACT: Kelly Marie Tran never confirmed she was "trolled" or "bullied" off of Instagram. Look up JJ Abrams saying that those disenchanted with the new Star Wars film are "threatened by women". He assumed critical fans are sexist. All that has to happen is a 25% reduction in revenue from TLJ. As of now, I estimate that at least 50% of Star Wars fans will skip it in theaters. So you're counting on the general public to hang in there? Only $1 billion for a Star Wars saga film is embarrassing.
  15. Yes, I cared. It was reassuring to know that others (the general public, fans, critics) recognized what I did: awkward screenplays/line delivery, overbearing special effects, Jar Jar, young Anakin's casting, etc. This was the general consensus of the films. 'Bashing' them was commonplace. Rian Johnson made the film knowing that it would divide the fans. He admitted that subverting expectations was his goal... and dismisses all criticism of the film. Detractors get blocked, ignored, or name-called. Define "Episode 9 being successful". Disney will care if it doesn't "make a shit load of money"... and, as any business should, will take appropriate action moving forward. At this point, I don't think it being "good" to some will matter. I'd say about half of the people that won't be going to see it are doing so on principle... to send a message to Disney that they don't like what's happening with the franchise. I have much more to say. Stay tuned. You are wrong about that. The fans don't appreciate be generalized, name-called, accused (racist, sexist, trolls, toxic "threatened by strong women"), or dehumanized (Russian bots*). Word of their unprofessional language gets around. And for many, this will be a reason to boycott all Star Wars content. At the very least, it's a contributing factor. Does anyone think an apology will ever be issued? Will "they perceive [these] elements detrimental to their business's image"... or actually take action to correct them? If not... For many, Episode 9 will not be "worth their time." Business 101: Don't insult your customers. * Rian Johnson said the researchers finding were "consistent with my experience online" that up to 50% of the online disapproval of TLJ originated from Russian bots. With the biggest fanbase in the world of any IP, Star Wars films should always be vying for the #1 spot. We'll see. I've heard many instances of people that say they will not buy TLJ for their "collection". Same goes for other Star Wars merchandise. Think of all that lost potential revenue! Disney needs to wake up. But they may not until Episode 9 doesn't even cross the $1B mark.
  16. Any thoughts I have need to 'originate in my own brain' or not be written by 'nerds' to be valid? What are your facts? You failed to address my point. I said, the worst thing that can happen to Disney regarding Star Wars is that "the detractors whose views might not extend as far as [my] vitriol" needn't understand all of the issues or negative aspects of the TLJ. But all things considered, they feel disenchanted enough about Star Wars to not pay for it. And from Disney's perspective, that's the worst thing that can happen. I challenge anyone to find mainstream website threads with a majority of the people praising TLJ. It's proof showing of the majority of commentors on a mainstream website that are extremely disenchanted with Star Wars. Posting links went unnoticed. While (generally) poorly executed, the prequels were written and directed by the creator of Star Wars... and had a planned-in-advance story to tell... and were well-intentioned - unlike TLJ. Which one? I don't think I'll ever be "posting to an empty void". @Jay are you calling me a troll? Do you consider my posts "shitposting"? Care to share your thoughts on TLJ... and the state of Star Wars, in general? Disney/LFL is a business. They require customers' money to stay in business. Being rude or accusatory - or calling people names (like "manbabies" or "assholes") - is unprofessional and will turn many people off... some much so that they will cease all business with the company. Without enough revenue, those in charge of the business will be replaced. This is akin to a sports coach being fired after a disappointing season. As for "breathtaking" double-standard, I'd say less than 0.001% of Star Wars customers/fans are "hurling insults" at Disney or Lucasfilm employees. The rest are just “concerned/upset” - many of which did not pay to see Solo... and will not pay to see Episode 9 unless things change. This anger/concern among the fans is entirely the fault to Disney/Lucasfilm for making lazy, unimaginative, or divisive films... and then saying things like "We don't care. 🤷‍♂️" This is not rocket science. I have many more things to say. Let's see if you can resist visiting this topic and replying to me. Mark my words, a few of these films will make more money than Episode 9.
  17. My copy-pasted comment weren't useless. Some of you will read them and realize the backlash is very real... and increasing in numbers. Also, everyone got to laugh at me! And now... I will stick out my tongue at you all. 😛 "Who gives a flying fig what people are saying?" Why does anyone share their thoughts? What a stupid thing to say! The fans hope that their communication and combined efforts will get Star Wars back on the right track. I believe they are right! I've realized that this whole situation with Star Wars has parallels with the Original and Prequel Trilogies: A once trusted ally is nominated to take control, which quickly leads to an unwelcome and unpleasant directional change. It becomes obvious that those in charge are on a selfish endevour and do not care for the majority. Support for the oppressors decreases daily. And after years of diligent efforts, a determined, righteous group wins in the end... and peace returns. (Obviously, the last part has yet to happen in reality. But I am truly hopeful.)
  18. I understand now. Why do my thoughts need to 'originate in my own brain' or not be written by 'nerds' to be valid? What were your facts? Apart from the (welcome) comic relief posts, this thread has kept on-topic... and is not "unintelligible" in any way. Dismissing "an entire thread full of comments from such people" as indicates that you are in denial regarding how wide-spreading the backlash has become. Can you direct me to "random comment threads" on websites that show a similar percentage of praise for TLJ? Which of the comments above imply that it's possible that some "like or even love TLJ and still dislike particular elements within the film"? "The detractors whose views might not extend as far as [my] vitriol does" needn't understand all of the issues or negative aspects of the TLJ. But all things considered, they feel disenchanted enough about Star Wars to not pay for it. And from Disney's perspective, that's the worst thing that can happen.
  19. *edited for sake of space in thread* ??? I edited nothing. So any thoughts I have need to 'originate in my own brain' or not be written by 'nerds' to be valid? What are your facts?
  20. I was asked to provide evidence that the fans are disenchanted on sites that are not 'a haven for people wanting to bash the new movies'. Linking articles didn't seem to drive my point home, so I copy-pasted comments. Anyone should be able to scan through them in a few minutes. Practically every one of those comments represent people on 'my side'.

I am hoping to see the last planned film cancelled. Strange because the old films had redeemable messages as well, they just didn’t cram them down your throat and had a working knowledge of the universe in which these characters lived. Leia was a strong female character back in the 70’s, why do we need to be punched in the face with it? It’s odd also because JJ did a good job initially as The Force Awakens was a good film, it made me care about the lead character, I was intrigued by her (<) backstory and potential interracial romance with her friend… the. the 2nd film appeared and drove it all off a cliff. A small minority of fans is not to blame for incompetence and ruining one of the best movie franchises of my childhood. There's no undoing the damage done at this point, I'll never waste another penny. REPLYREPORT COMMENT DavidN says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 6:42 PM Well I’ll be very interested to see how this deal stands if episode 9 follows the downward trend of the Star Wars franchise. There is only so much a studio can take of its properties being run into the ground. As it stands Disney is yet to see a profit in the lucasfilm deal. Which is terrible considering they’ve made four films. 4 billion purchase. So far it’s running at a 1.5 billion loss, even with murchadising, tv, blu ray sales etc. But Disney has a very poor regard for its fan base so I’m not surprised there is a boycott in place. If they keep on doing this I can easily see this boycott extending into their other properties. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Justin Nappier says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 6:37 PM Look I can over look bad writing, I can even overlook them taking a giant shit on beloved characters, I can even overlook the bad portrayal of strong women( If you think that Rey, Rose and Holdo are showcases of strong women I feel bad for you maybe go watch a Alien film or T2) But the breaking of the rules of the Universe I can not over look, With Hyper speed fleet destroying, I mean why didn’t the rebels just do that twice against the death stars or against the imperial fleet. and so forth. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Aaron McCafferty says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 5:18 PM Dear White men: Disney doesn’t want you in its worlds and it doesn’t want your money. Act accordingly. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Joe says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 3:37 PM Are these people out of their mind ? Kathleen Kennedy is the main reason why “Star Wars” is a ruin today. She has the distinction of destroying an ultra-profitable franchise within a few years. The problem with “Han Solo” wasn’t so much, that it came too fast. The real problem is the style, tone and childish content of these films. They have no edge, verisimilitude and real drama anymore. Kennedy chose the wrong directors and wrong actors. If Kathleen Kennedy really produces another trilogy with Rian Johnson, she is even crazier than I ever thought she would be. “The Last Jedi” was made in such bad taste, it alienated most fans too much. Get rid of Kennedy ASAP ! REPLYREPORT COMMENT loco73 says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 3:13 PM That is pure bantha poodoo! REPLYREPORT COMMENT Jim says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 3:00 PM It was only one failure, however big……but she lost money, on a Star Wars film. I figured that was impossible. Mind you, I loved the film…..but it lost so much money. A Star Wars film. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Art Mooney says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 1:01 PM Oh boy. The only thing worse than Kathleen Kennedy is Jar Jar Abrams and his memberberries. I never thought I’d aay this but; is there any way to get George Lucas back? REPLYREPORT COMMENT Jack says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 12:41 PM Sorry Disney and Lucasfilm but this is not going to sit well with most fans. The fans are the paying customers. Kennedy was responsible for the recent bad Star Wars films and her negativity towards the male fan base. The fan boycott on the films and merchandise will just continue to grow. The next 3 years will save me an average of $13,000 a year which I won’t be spending. Sad to see the Star Wars franchise end up like this. REPLYREPORT COMMENT George says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 11:43 AM Star wars episode 9 – the rise of supreme leader kennedy REPLYREPORT COMMENT Bill B. says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 11:19 AM This is a shame. She’s one of the prime reasons the series has become so monotonous and stagnant. REPLYREPORT COMMENT MD says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 7:58 AM It’s too bad the box office failure of Solo and the fake “Kelly Marie Trann was harassed” story didn’t get rid of her. If any of us were responsible for those two things, we’d have been gone LONG ago. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Shane says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 7:25 AM Well, I will always remember Star Wars for what it was. This new propaganda rhetoric that Kennedy is pushing down our throats is garbage. I dont care about the characters sexual orientation or the droids liberation movement I just want good old fashioned sci fi and death, destruction, the good-bad and the force. Oh well Star Wars R.I.P. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Alex says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 7:12 AM Really bad news, “The Last Jedi” sucked, “Solo” lost money so they extended her contract? If they keep Rian Johnson (He spells it with an “I”?) get ready for more boycotts, but they’ll blame the bad box office on poor marketing.. The fandom doesn’t think the “STAR WARS” saga is not just another popcorn flick, they will stay away (They see them several times in the theaters) and NOT buy the toys. Disney is caving in to the social justice warriors these people don’t even see the films and don’t buy the toys. Many of us have common sense.. You’re just another example of failed parenting strategies by guess who… your inbred Gen X parents. Some of us were lucky not to have parents teaching us from ‘101 ways to raise a child’ books. REPLYREPORT COMMENT JJ says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 12:50 PM I am so sick of millennial entitled do nothing attitudes. I am elated that the millennial generation is the smallest and most reviled generation to ever grace this planet. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Matthew@40 says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 6:38 AM I feel as a long time Star Wars fan that the exits of Han and Luke could have been better done and hopefully they will do a better exit with Leia but I doubt it. I get that they want to start with a different generation of characters but you have to pay respect to the characters that started the franchise in the first place and that I blame on producers that should know better like Kennedy REPLYREPORT COMMENT Rationalist says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 2:22 AM I’m a 40 yr old male and long time Star Wars fan. This is terrific news. The franchise has flourished under Kennedy and while TLJ could have been better, I’ve generally loved the hell out of the new films. Go Kathleen! And roll on episode ix… REPLYREPORT COMMENT JJ says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 1:06 PM Flourished? Worst box-office take in the history of Star Wars is flourishing? She is poisoning Star Wars with pure propaganda. Star Wars is designed to be escapism art not a political commentary piece. This is the death knell for Star Wars. If you doubt what I am saying..we have already seen this fight countless times in gaming. Looking at Mass Effect (gone), and now Battlefield (they are in real trouble) the fans have spoken. Meanwhile games like the Withcher, GTA V, MGS V, Doom 2016, Hotline Miami 1+2,I could keep going for years (no political commentary and no PC culture) flourished, truly flourished. Actually, looking at the pre-order sales for Doom 2018 it looks like people are so tired of leftist propaganda (I’m not going this far) that they want the opposite (I don’t, I want none of it). REPLYREPORT COMMENT Karl says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 1:56 AM More soulless fan fiction garbage coming. RIP Star Wars REPLYREPORT COMMENT mike peterson says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 9:38 PM LOL gj regurgitating the Disney/media spin that its only a ‘vocal minority’. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Jason says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 8:52 PM Not looking forward to 3 more years of Star Wars being managed under her. They need to fire her. It amazes me that working for decades with the likes of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg on classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, etc. didn’t rub off on her. It doesn’t help that she’s not a creative, she’s on the business side of movies being a Producer, hence her choices in directors sucked (Lord and Miller should never have been considered). REPLYREPORT COMMENT Master Obi-Wan Kenobi says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 9:50 PM This is Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. I regret to report that both our franchise and its beloved lore have fallen, with the dark shadow of the Kathleen Kennedy Era rising to take their place. This message is a warning and a reminder for any surviving fans: trust in the Force. Do not return to the movie theaters. That time has passed, and our future as Star Wars fans is uncertain. Avoid EA’s games. Avoid the poor quality, expensive toys. Be reserved… but be strong. We will each be challenged: our trust, our faith, our friendships. But we must persevere and, in time, I believe a new hope for the franchise will emerge. May the Force be with you – always. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Brent says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 8:24 PM So we will continue the boycott. Disney just doesn’t get it. Goodbye to that franchise REPLYREPORT COMMENT Paul says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 6:34 PM I guess episode 8 making way less money than episode 7 was cause to extend ones contact! The TLJ haters make it their 24/7 job to patrol the internet and smear you or anyone supporting you but as usual, they are the VOCAL MINORITY!! May the force be with you!! REPLYREPORT COMMENT JJ says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 1:14 PM Vocal minority are We? How’s that box office failure equate to a win? A delusional bunch are you. If there was such a majority of people like you…why did Solo tank? Why was episode 7 financially more successful than 8? That is not how this works and is inductive of a problem. You keep banging your little drum as it’s only getting worse from here. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Scott Savigni says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 9:28 PM Hey Gwen this is the first time I’ve ever made any comment on TLJ on social media. But thought I would just let you know that I’m not the only one. I know plenty of people who have never made comment who simply will not be seeing episode 9. I didn’t really give a damn about the social justice crap going on in it. I and alot of others just thought it was a really badly directed movie. REPLYREPORT COMMENT BCM says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 6:44 PM The vocal minority, but the silent majority when it comes to buying tickets. Dumb move. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Brent says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 8:26 PM Not the minority’ clearly over 60% and each movie she has been involved in has earned less . She has been hiding and doing a terrible job REPLYREPORT COMMENT Hans Soylo says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 4:31 PM Hollywood, the only industry where massive failure is an option as long as the social justice messaging is on point. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Gwen says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 4:19 PM God! Will this nightmare never end!?! Why are you presenting this as good news???? The majority of Star Wars fans are just waiting for this woman to leave! The news of her renewal has been online just for a few hours and there’s already massive talks of boycott for Ep. IX. Since I can now confirm that’s it’s going to be another pile of garbage, because Kennedy is still there, I’ll plan to spend my money on something else. Thankful, the “Transformers ” franchise seems to be spot on with “Bumblebee”, so I already know where that money will be spent. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Zoe says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 4:15 PM That’s more than a little shocking. What does it take? I mean, really, what does it take?!?!?! Disney as an organism is destroying itself. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Thomas Caldwell says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 3:42 PM Well that does it I will never watch another Star Wars movie in the theater again for the rest of my life. nor will I go with my friends, or buy merch and my kids already don’t care about it, so they wont have any nostalgic feelings, to pass on to there kids. TFA was a cash grab reboot. TLJ was awful dumpster fire. i didnt see rogue one or solo, and wont unless its all thats playing on a flight to denver. just like bad service at a restaurant, there are too many choices to be stuck or committed to something you don’t like. Don’t get upset. Don’t complain just never give them your money ever again for the rest of your life. and so it is with Denny’s McDonald’s and a dozen other places and products. The duo got me excited for Solo in the first place and firing them put me off from the film. REPLYREPORT COMMENT michael says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 2:03 PM Good. Maybe this news will make the haters’ heads explode and we won’t have to endure their incessant whining in comments sections anymore. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Your Boss says: OCTOBER 5, 2018 AT 2:33 PM But you’re whining about people whining in the comments section in the comments section. Does that mean your head has now exploded. A little hypocritical I think. If something is bad…. people will hate it. Whining about it won’t make it go away. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Damon says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 2:35 PM This is exactly backwards. If the announcement had been that Kennedy was let go, then of course there would have been massive online celebrating. But then things would have calmed down and people would have followed the news of upcoming Star Wars installments with hope they might somehow actually be good. Now everyone knows they are going to be terrible, so the fun is in predicting how, and in which ways, the movie is going to suck. REPLYREPORT COMMENT michael says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 4:30 PM Thank you for proving my point. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Gwen says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 5:36 PM Haha I know right? They just patrol the internet 25/7 trying to make it LOOK like everyone hates her; it’s lole a religion! REPLYREPORT COMMENT JJ says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 1:32 PM I’m sorry, I have never, I repeat never post anything on the subject before today. You see, I have a job and an actual education. I generally don’t have time for such nonsense; However, as a true Star Wars fan and again educated one, I understand what this truly means. The franchise is on borrowed time and looking solely at the box office as an investor (I am well vested) the writing is on the wall. You and your friends can do a little song and dance at this victory…it will be short lived. As an investor I look at trends to help me invest my money into successful products. Star Wars has become a net loser. Now, while it is true that I do not invest in Hollywood productions (think boring) the principles are the same. I hope you read my post and come to an understanding of how things actually work. Do the research and you will find me to be correct. Ask yourself these questions- If they are such a vocal minority, why so many? They can’t possibly typing at several sites at once (not as often as you see it). Why do I think they are the minority? Is it possible I have this wrong? REPLYREPORT COMMENT Damon says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 6:46 PM Thank you for reading my comments, but I’m just one person. Mostly I’ve just been posting here on variety.com and Star Wars is probably less that 1% of what I write about. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Damon says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 6:53 PM Also, the “Gwen” of 5:34 pm and 5:36 pm above seems to be different than the Gwen of 4:19 pm. Damon says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 4:46 PM You’re welcome. REPLYREPORT COMMENT The Elder says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 2:00 PM Congrats, Kathleen! Well-deserved. Also… cue the predictable and retrograde misogynistic “sjw” comments from the typical mouthbreather fanboys. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Damon says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 1:58 PM “The veteran producer and chief of the Disney content giant behind “Star Wars” has renewed her deal through 2021, an individual familiar with the negotiations told Variety, following a tumultuous year for the label under her control.” Word salad. But Kathleen Kennedy is sticking around, and there’s no good way to say that. RIP Star Wars REPLYREPORT COMMENT Jim says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 1:19 PM Mistake. She’s taken things down a shaky direction. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Duck Dodgers says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 1:10 PM Well there goes it… The franchise is in the sh!t hole for another 3 yrs. Damn it I thought we were done with her and her sjw bs. I guess with that Ruin Johnson gets his trilogy as well. Sad day in the galaxy. REPLYREPORT COMMENT 87421 says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 2:16 PM Show some respect to Johnson. He barely saved the franchise from near-extinction while Kennedy bowed to Grandmaster Lawrence Kasdan’s shitty demands. It’s Kasdan you should be blaming for ruining Star Wars. Destroying a director’s vision IN THE MIDDLE OF SHOOTING (especially when it involves one of the best directing duos we have today) is automatically gonna be a shitty collaborator in my eyes. Kennedy may have done her job as a producer but she picked battles with the wrong people. REPLYREPORT COMMENT the3rdwatch says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 2:53 PM Jon Kasdan had absolutely NO BUSINESS writing that Solo movie. He was not qualified and he was basically hired because his dad has pull. He is not a good writer… REPLYREPORT COMMENT 87421 says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 11:16 PM I still want to know why Larry Kasdan was so proud of his shitty script. I’m sorry but all that experience everyone uses to defend Kasdan clearly means nothing when the script he wrote is about as tasty and depthful as styrofoam. Sounds to me that Lord and Miller are upping their game and were ACTUALLY trying to fix Kasdan’s script. In that case, they did the right thing by doing so. Plus, Ron Howard is a worse director than Lord and Miller and made a terrible movie. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Skippy handelman says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 1:03 PM Ok so it will be sjw wars movies that lose thier core audience and money till shes out. REPLYREPORT COMMENT JJ says: SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 AT 1:34 PM Can I upvote this? Two thumbs up! Your comment is absolutely on point. REPLYREPORT COMMENT Bob says: SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 AT 4:27 PM This.
  22. Ok, then. See this Variety poll taken shortly after Solo was released. SPOILER ALERT: Solo and TLJ are last. Star Wars movie poll taken on Jedi Temple Archives (TLJ was last) Comments copy-pasted from this article on IndieWire: Comments copy-pasted from this Variety article regarding Kathleen Kenndy's contract extention.
  23. Please define "dominate the box office". I predict it doesn't even break $1 billion. We don't have to wait to see my "points". It's happening as we speak. I posted links showing majority fan disenchantment and dropping merchandise sales. And we all know what happened with the latest film. Please direct me to the "same love and enthusiasm from the [happy] fans". I challenge you to dispute any of my facts and theories with facts and theories of your own.
  24. I already agreed with you on this. Please read my previous posts. Please direct me to the "same love and enthusiasm from the fans". TLJ's Blu-ray sales are half that of TFA in the US. The fact is, the fan backlash will continue to negatively affect the sales all Star Wars merchandise in a major way. I've said I hated the film... but also gone into detail regarding the major issues with the characters and events within it. You cannot deny the issues themselves - just that you didn't mind them... or liked them. Regarding 'the state of the franchise', I provided facts and directed you to numerous Star Wars Disenchantment channels/videos that have an extremely high like-dislike ratio. SOLO, a theatrical Star Wars film, just bombed majorly! Merchandise sales are in the dumps. If you think these issues are nothing to worry about and just the result of Star Wars fatigue... or the result of backlash from a 'vocal minority', then yes, compared to you, I am "the enlightened one". If you think the backlash is dying down - or will largely be over - by the time Episode 9 comes around, it's you who are delusional. I'm just putting together the most logical explanation of what's happening with Star Wars. Is Kathleen Kennedy's story-group a diverse group of writers from all sides of the political spectrum? Probably not. Apart from Han Solo in his titular film, all the protagonists in the films (and the latest video game) have been women. I'm not saying that inherently is a problem... but is it a coincidence? They have an agenda, and it's not to please most people... to make the most money. Or are they just inept? Slandering the intentions of filmmakers? Their Twitter comments alone paint quite a clear picture of the state of the franchise. ("Manbabies", "threatened by women", "We don't care. 🤷‍♂️") Don't think for a second that Star Wars is too big to fail. It may have to before it can rise from the ashes. I may be part of "a strong concentrated online presence", but Solo did not loose $200M online. Most fans (customers) that paid to see the other spin-off film (Rouge One) skipped it. Don't think for a second that they won't skip Episode 9 as well if no significant changes (improvements) are perceived by the fans before its release.
